@scottschiller I had a jag and a jack, and the jack was a little bigger, but the jag was king of the tank. Did the jag eventually try to rule the roost. In my experience no matter their size jags and red devils seem to always try to be king on a long enough time line.
my jags do the same the bow down from a fight but after the light goes out i usually find the fish picking on my jag dead the next morning. no matter the size difference.
Jags are strategic, they dont start a fight that they arent sure they can survive. He will stay in that tank and dominate the food source until he is larger than the Dempseys then exert his will on them.
If you put a Dempsey in with a male female pair of jags it would get eaten pretty quick, I doubt it would last 2 days. Dempseys just arent as tough as the true killers!
great looking fish ... not trying to be a jerk to correct you bu im pretty damn sure that "jaguar" cichlid is actually called a managuense cichlid. i had one for years.
in your opinion do you think jack dempsy's will get along with green terrors and parrot fishes? I have a 40 gallon tank with those fish and just came across a beautiful dempsy. I would like to get the fish but dont want to have it picked on until it dies. Any advice would be appreciated
Since the JDs were in the tank first,of course they will terrorize the Jaguar.Right now I have a TIger Oscar 6 inchs and a 4 inch JD in the tank.I made sure I grabbed the most aggressive healthiest JD at the store.Well it didn't take long for the JD to show respect towards the Oscar, since the Oscar has been in the tank longer. They both get along though, which is nice.
Damn, those are some gorgeous Jacks! By far my favorite cichlid. For any moron who think a Jaguar cichlid can beat a Jack Dempsey, unless u've seen this personally (doubt it), don't make such a FOOLISH claim. The Jaguar (Managuense) is a fish that merely threatens, but rarely battles. Every battle mine got into, it lost. They're weak spirirted. The Jack isn't a killer, either. It's a dominator. It also protects my punk Firemouth. Jack Dempsey's rule!!!!!
@leolux10 a foolish statement is what u said. obiously a jag gets 1.5x there size and yes they do have a big temper. ever fish has its own personality but there is a reason that jags are one of the most aggresive species. Parachromis,Nandopsis,Amphilophus look at those genus might learn something, your comment is as dumb as saying a umbe or dovii would be dominated by ur jd. the jag in this isnt as mature and isnt the alpha male so for a time it will submit. i ♥ schooling amature fish keepers.
@zerocool212121 No, you retard, with the perfectly befitting name. I was speaking from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. Got it now? You, on the other hand, speak from your ass. Out of all of my cichlids, my Jag (murdered) was dominated to the very bottom of the ranks. That was until I added a gay ass GT (also murdered) to the mix. It was then taken over by the larger Jag. Just because you're a Jag fag, doesn't make them any cooler. Your "knowledge" extends only as far as what you THINK you know. Get a grip.
@leolux10 obviously from YOUR statments it shows the knowlege that you convinced yourself to be true. there are many factors why ur shit when wrong, ex. tank size, when they where introduced togeter or one at a time, ext. ext. your asumptions just make me laugh u dont know me and u know nothing of what ive owned or how long ive been in this trade. u couldnt even comment on the genus of those fish so i would doubt u even know there sub species. i personaly dont like jags but thats just me.
@zerocool212121 I need no convincement. I have actual knowledge. Knowing the genus of every fish I own is unecessary for me. I enjoy the fish that I own. Cmmon or not. Stop doing your research via Google, and YouTube. lol
@zerocool212121 As for the size matter. It does matter to an extent. But there are cases where it doesn't. The aggresive nature of a fish can enable it to overcome it to overcome, and overpower a much larger rival. Jags have large mouths, but they can't compare with the crushing jaws of a JD, Blood Jewel, or even a GT. they're questionable at best. The Jack Dempsey is undeniable. ;)
@leolux10 now by your chan u have zero vids so it shows how u eather dont have fish or your tank looks like shit. size matters to and extent but there genus will tell you more. if u call yourself a collector then u might want some not common species. and what kind of gt did u have? there are 3 species that are called gt didnt know that did ya. well no need to reply i have already seen enough propaganda from u. btw i dont need to compare how many i have owned my list would be ezr of what i havent
@zerocool212121 A list of my growing cichlid collection. Ahem: Jack Dempsey (pair), Firemouth (pair), Black Convict, Blood Jewel (murdered Jag & GT), Red Devil, Curvicep (pair/1 deceased), Black Tiger Oscar, Kribensis, White Tiger Oscar (deceased =( ), and Flowerhorn. I'm obviously no "amature" (w/e the fuck that is), but an avid cichlid collector, for most of my life. How many fish have YOU owned, that have lived full/happy lives, only to die on their OWN terms? How did this work out? I've got a 6" jag, who is a total beast! (We named he/she "Hanibal Lector" for a reason) I want to put something else in the tank with him, and am a long time Jack Dempsey lover.
@elnegro66 I've always used Dempseys as kings of the tank, and it works out well. If they are as big as other fish, they normally have no problem with them. A Managuense isn't a good fighter, and doesn't have the crushing jaws of a Dempsey. If they are the same size, and the Dempsey fights back, it will scrap it.
Dempseys generally don't kill though, which is why I like them. They keep other fish from dominating, but mostly like to pose and strut, and not kill.
@yomexicosfinest93 Not always. Those Dempseys probably carry the blue gene (which is the gene that helps make electric blue Dempseys) There are 3 kinds of Dempseys.
1 Regular Dempseys (fairly lighter and less greenish blue specks)
2 Dempseys Blue Gene (darker in color and tons of blue specks)
I'm planning on getting 2 tiger oscars, an electric blue, electric yellow, jack dempsey, a convict cichlid, and a pleco. what size tank would I need for all of those fully grown?
naw pound 4 pound managuense/jaguar cichlid can be VERY MEAN. its not like they all r or u cant train/tame them. its just that there very aggressive. jags can get up 2 about 12 inches.
when I got my little 3 inch dempsey he was in a jaguar cichlid tank...he wasn't the smallest, and wasn't the biggest..It's funny caus my dempsey was the most dominate in that jag tank...
These kind of fish don't make good pets with other species, imo. Maybe it was just the jack dempseys I had, I don't know, but I had to pull a piranha that was almost a foot long out of a tank with jack dempseys because they would constantly harass it. Even the females are more aggressive than other cichlids, at least that's what I've seen. I've seen them with oscars too, they didn't really get along either but oscars fight back. Too many ripped fins though.
This video is about Jack Dempseys, not Oscars. I was talking about Jack Dempseys. I know they are more aggressive than Oscars and a lot of other cichlids; that is my point!

A Flowerhorn is a hybrid between many different south and central American cichlids. The main species used was the Trimac, that was their base fish. Then they bred it with many different SA/CA cichlids to get the Flowerhorns you see today, not just two like the guy SHenaniguys08 said.
i have that fish (the one with blue dots all over it) just the same! never seen anyone else with one before. He's in a tank on his own though because he's so agressive.
omg the fuking pet store employee told me the blue rams were jack dempseys so just to be safe i bought a different colored ram, but now i know they were rams :(. I dont even know why they put the rams in the tanks labeled jack dempseys >.>
@istayswhite that's always fun to do but risky, u never know if those animals may have been exposed to pesticides outside and may end up intoxicating your fish. Would be sad indeed to loose one of these magnificent specimens.

Hi, I know fishkeeping is a great hobby and I need some advice. I'm getting a 55g tank but I don't know if these fish will kill eachother, if I should lose one, if i just need a bigger tank, or if I don't need either the catfish or pleco. I was wondering about getting a GT, JD, Convict, Texas, a catfish and a pleco. I will provide adequate caves/shelters Etc... Thanks for the help
sound like this is your first tank. if Im right you should star stocking the tank slowly. first the convict, and the pleco, that way you learn the basics of water change, feeding, and filter clean up. after that (at least two months) add another fish, and everytime you add a new one change the settings of the tank, move things around that way you change all the territories already mark for each fish.(imagine your first day at a new job, wouldn't be nice if everybody was new?)and you need a biggr tank
you gonna need a bigger tank eventualy JD,GT,PLECOS,get huge in about a year, I'll would recomend a 125g,with plenty of rocks and caves.remember this is not a race take your time, and you'ld be enjoying a tank for a long time.
I've had several 12+ inch plecos, thanks for the advice and I keep thinking about the 55g, I dunno if that will work or not but if I save up a little more i'll get a 75 with a nice filter and a powerhead.
The size of tank you need really depends on the size of fish and whether you plan on getting a breeding pair or not. With Jags, it really won't matter health wise whether you get a breeding pair or not, but they will become a lot more aggressive when you do, even with each other. Minimum, you need a 60 gallon tank tank for these guys. They won't hurt a Pleco, but if they spawn, the Plecos will eat the eggs.
Brandon, you can expect your albino to reach anywhere from 15" to 18" at it's largest. I have 2, they're currently about 12" but they're babies. They go well with plecos (I have two britlenose catfish with mine) or other large fish like Jack dempseys.
38 gallon tank, you could only have 1(a 15" fish needs min. 55 gallons). You're better with a 100 -150 gallon tank if you want to keep a few larger cichlids. Or just do weekly water changes if you'r tanks going to be any smaller than 100g's.
Isn't there a species of Gourami that grow really big? I saw one a couple of weeks ago at an aquatics store and I was told that this Gourami was a vegatarian!
It was huge! I mean I thought Gourami only grew to three or four inches.....
there is this fish from south america (no not an arowana) that get pretty big. twice or three times the size of arowanas. they are the largest freshwater fish in the world. search youtube for largest freshwater fish. some guy has one as a pet.
no its not, world largest freshwater fish in the world are sturgeons...white sturgeons =P a record of 20ft long.
anywayz...scary to have a big fish as a pet, and man that jaguar gotta be move out or else either a dempsey ended dead or the jaguar. jaguar have teeth and a jaw more powerful than dempsey.
if i put a fish like that in my tank sadly it wouuld get killed within seconds but the video woud be alot better than that crap i have a pink cichlid i dont know what it is but well lets just say if you saw my tank you would think its the only fish i had
wat the hells ur problem!? this guy ir showing us how nice and great his fish are and u cut him down? get the fuck out of here u dumb bitch i bet my soft shell turtle could kill wat ever fish u have!!!
that is a very bad idea, because the demasonis will rip the angels, and they require diffrent water parametres. you are much better to go with a community with angels, or a african cichlid tank (a very few of them). Peace, i hope this helped
20G is very small for one of these fish. Maybe when they're born, but 20G only be good for a few months after that. You'd need at least a 50G for one fish.
cool thing about these two breeds is they can cross breed

yes it is, its trimac X something else :)
iamthegreatestriddle 3 years ago
yea it is a cichlid, but it's a hybrid of 2 different fish. I forget which 2 but i think one is a red devil, not sure about that though.
Shenaniguys08 3 years ago
i believe its a red devil and a parrot
tvanluyk 2 years ago
A Flowerhorn is a hybrid between many different south and central American cichlids. The main species used was the Trimac, that was their base fish. Then they bred it with many different SA/CA cichlids to get the Flowerhorns you see today, not just two like the guy SHenaniguys08 said.

Thanks for the help
macorine987 3 years ago
sound like this is your first tank. if Im right you should star stocking the tank slowly. first the convict, and the pleco, that way you learn the basics of water change, feeding, and filter clean up. after that (at least two months) add another fish, and everytime you add a new one change the settings of the tank, move things around that way you change all the territories already mark for each fish.(imagine your first day at a new job, wouldn't be nice if everybody was new?)and you need a biggr tank
supramax79 3 years ago
No no no, this is like my third tank, I just assumed that I should get them all at the same time so that they get used to each other and don't fight.
macorine987 3 years ago
you gonna need a bigger tank eventualy JD,GT,PLECOS,get huge in about a year, I'll would recomend a 125g,with plenty of rocks and caves.remember this is not a race take your time, and you'ld be enjoying a tank for a long time.
supramax79 3 years ago
I've had several 12+ inch plecos, thanks for the advice and I keep thinking about the 55g, I dunno if that will work or not but if I save up a little more i'll get a 75 with a nice filter and a powerhead.
macorine987 3 years ago
The size of tank you need really depends on the size of fish and whether you plan on getting a breeding pair or not. With Jags, it really won't matter health wise whether you get a breeding pair or not, but they will become a lot more aggressive when you do, even with each other. Minimum, you need a 60 gallon tank tank for these guys. They won't hurt a Pleco, but if they spawn, the Plecos will eat the eggs.
Let us know how it works out for you :)

I have a ton of new beautiful african cichlids that ALL need naming. Check out the videos in my channel, rate and comment! Thanks!

eguy777 3 years ago

I mean I thought Gourami only grew to three or four inches.....
jimmysherriff 3 years ago
Giant Gourami or Red-finned Gourami.
Greeneyez2475 3 years ago
My Dempsey is the same way, he protects his territory by slowly "nudging" the fish away.

Poor Jaguar. I always feed my fish when I am going to introduce a new one. It sometimes helps. Maybe you should try it.

jimmysherriff 3 years ago

brazzr 3 years ago
there is this fish from south america (no not an arowana) that get pretty big. twice or three times the size of arowanas. they are the largest freshwater fish in the world. search youtube for largest freshwater fish. some guy has one as a pet.
willis650 3 years ago
no its not, world largest freshwater fish in the world are sturgeons...white sturgeons =P a record of 20ft long.
anywayz...scary to have a big fish as a pet, and man that jaguar gotta be move out or else either a dempsey ended dead or the jaguar. jaguar have teeth and a jaw more powerful than dempsey.
hmoobxi0ng 3 years ago
not a lot of people know that white surgeon are the largest freshwater fish, they usually think its a lake trout.
hizzleeee 3 years ago
Oohh yeah!! my uncle raises some sturgeons, but he had to get this license for it. I heard they are really really old race of fishes.
masterofelements1884 3 years ago
just searched it. the fish is an arapaima gigas. the ygrow up to 15 feet and a guy had a 46" on in a 720 gallon aquarium.

thanks do you think 2 angel fish a cople of demasoni's and 1 or 2 yellow labs would be ok in a 20g ? thanks
alex18208 4 years ago
Not too sure, I might try looking at an aquarium forum for best advice. I only had Dempseys, the "ID shark" and a few other small fish.
scottschiller 4 years ago
ok thnks anywya love your fish when i get a bigger tank want some dempseys
alex18208 4 years ago
that is a very bad idea, because the demasonis will rip the angels, and they require diffrent water parametres. you are much better to go with a community with angels, or a african cichlid tank (a very few of them). Peace, i hope this helped
Branbits 3 years ago
thanks. i think ill be getting a demasoni with 1 or 2 labs and another 2 smaller african cichlids. would that be ok
thanks
alex18208 3 years ago
you cant mix angels or discus with agressive african or american cichlids,if your going to try any cichlids it should be rams keyholes kribensis etc
Breniznit 3 years ago
No, Angel fish will get torn apart by Demasoni and Labs.
FREAKDAWG 3 years ago
what gallon is your tank, could you keep 1 jack dempsey in a 20g thnaks
alex18208 4 years ago
20G is very small for one of these fish. Maybe when they're born, but 20G only be good for a few months after that. You'd need at least a 50G for one fish.
scottschiller 4 years ago
thanks do you think 2 angel fish a cople of demasoni's and 1 or 2 yellow labs would be ok in a 20g ? thanks
alex18208 4 years ago
So who won out in the end??
bono1956 4 years ago
jags are far more agressive than jack dempseys, its not really that much of a fight lol.I breed both species and a jag would tear a dempsey to shreads
Breniznit 3 years ago
they're beautiful .kudos to you
dezbrin 4 years ago
the jack dempseys got a tough contestant there, beacause the jaguar can grow to about 90 cm;)

Jaguar cichlid? Looks like a Managuenses to me...
mrarcusa 4 years ago
Scientific name is Nandopsis managuensis. Common names are: Jaguar cichlid, Jag, Manguense, Mang, But its the same fish.
Cirux321 4 years ago
how did you maintain your jacks,
this lady at a shop wouldn't sell me a male jack and i already have a female jack,
she told me that the female would kill the male in less then 24 hours, i was like just give me the fish already lol.
djay91 4 years ago
I inherited the two dempseys as a "matched" pair from a friend, they'd been together for a long time I guess and seemed to get along well.
scottschiller 4 years ago
ooh, well that's good i guess.
my firemouth like mauls my fish,
even though they are bigger they still get beat and shit.
