@TheReturnoflee I just checked your profile out and see that you're only 14. Just so you understand, there was no HDTV or Speed Channel re-airs in 1982, Cable TV was a luxury, and DVDs were still several years away. Back in 1982 it was pretty rare to have the ability to record a race, and you only had 2 options...VHS or Betamax. So remember that when you criticize 30 year old footage on YouTube.
And Inman left Jim Stacy's team at season's end to join Billy Hagan Racing and driver Terry Labonte for three years, where he won the championship in 1984, allowing him to one-up his cousin, King Richard, as it was Inman's eighth championship in his role as crew chief, one more than Richard Petty won as a driver.
i miss this era of nascar, the cars didn't all look alike and the drivers spoke and acted like everyday people, having money is a good thing but having to much money has ruined alot of good things and nascar is one of them,a victim of it's own sucsess is a phrase i believe applies here, can i get an amen.
Which engine sound is the chevy's, the higher pitched one or the lower pitched sound. I could listen to the engines all day if I had time, they sounded good.
When CBS had the NBA, it seemed like Boston took on LA after the race, and then it turned into Indiana taking on Michigan in college action when CBS lost the NBA.
those small block chevy's sounded good then didnt they? gotta love em, lol. You could close your eyes, have 10 cars go by and have 1 chevy in those 10 cars, and u could tell when the chevy went by.
Yes very true, but all those buicks and oldsmobiles, were running small block chevy engines...thats what i meant. Not an actually chevy make...sorry for not completely clarifying myself
Nope, not until the following week at Richmond...and one of them won. I can't recall ifor certain but I think thye were Lagunas. At any rate, the were mainly run on the short tracks for most of 82. The Monte Carlo SS came out in 1983 and hung around for 6 years.
Except that there were no Chevrolets in this race for the only time in Daytona 500 history. [And only one started the 1981 race, which was driven into contention by David Pearson before it fell out near the three quarter mark.] 25 of the 42 cars that started this race were Buicks. Now the unusual engine noise came from the fact that most of the cars in this race ran 180 degree headers, which was not unusual back then. That seemed to change in 1983, when Chevrolet did return.
@PaulZuppardo I'm just watching my tape of the SPEED re air now. No idea why they cut this crash out but have time to show long stretches of boring green flag racing ...
@Racer252000 boring green flag racing? how is green flag racing boring? you can't race under the yellow! I see what you're saying except for this part lol... I'll take a caution free race over a caution filled race any day

I can't say I've heard of Wade Thornburg. I thought The King's Crew Chiefs were always his brother maurice Petty and then, their cousin, Dale Inman.
The1994Gforce 8 months ago
@The1994Gforce At this point, Dale Inman had left Petty Enterprises and was the crew chief for the #2 Joe Ruttman JD Stacy car.

@vanillacoker1 Oh, okay, alright. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

I heard a story a few years ago that during this race, Joe Ruttman had a message on his dashboard saying "Happy Valentine's Day Daddy". Is this true?
penske369 2 years ago
It actually said "Hi Harpo and Kids," a reference to his wife.
vanillacoker1 2 years ago
looks like Wawak up ahead blew his engine and they spun in his oil.

Seems Like Every Daytona 500 on CBS I see an the Lakers vs Celtics to show after the race.
AutoRockinRacing94 3 years ago 3
After the NBA left CBS, it was usually NCAA Basketball with Michigan VS. Indiana.
As a Wisconsin fan, as soon as the race was over, it resulted in a channel change.
