I play a 5 string for a year now and love it.Even planning on getting a 6 string to have more options on soloing and playing melodies. I hate how most bassplayers are just morons playing straight lines with their index finger.I also have utmost repect for guitarist who expand to 7 strings, there are simply so much more options to make your music more original and interesting.

@rippersk8er Don't know what you take as virtuoso shit. alot of technical/progressive death metal i can tell you. Progressive rock/metal in general to, Theres also something called the chapman stick wich isn't really a bass but still holds 8 strings.

These kind of instruments are indeed used to play a more technical kind of music. Don't expect it in your typical comfortable rock tunes. I guess because simplistic music is always preffered that people can't always understand this.

even being pro bass players and making use of all their strings, I think the whole idea to adding more and more strings to an instrument is pretty stupid. 6-7 string for guitars and 4-5 strings for bass, should be more than enough.

But I can understand those who master 4 string, jump to 5 and master it, and keep adding string and mastering them aswell... Its like getting a tattoo or a piercing, you want more and more.. (though, still can get pretty stupid at times) ;)
