they can,but it takes them many tries,and they usually drag themselves up stairs,another melee weapon i recommend for open areas is the Shaolin Spade.A 5-6ft hardwood staff,it has a crescent shaped metal piece on one end and a pear shaped bell at the other.A jab from either end will decapitate,and it can also smash zombie heads in,although i dont recommend this.Roman Gladius's can also work,although a machete is,if anything,a better choice

I`d choose an bow or a crossbow, An 1 hand axe and a revolver but the katana is also a good idea
