@TheCrazyUndeadVII Downfall and Extraction takes place at the same time. They're both a prequel to Dead Space, but they aren't prequels to each other cause they happened at the same time. I'd say Downfall is a true prequel cause it ends where Dead Space starts. Extraction was made later to explain what happened on the Colony while the events of Downfall was happening.

For those confused about the story arc of the games alongside the comic and film, extraction starts at around 3:30 on this video (in the timeline) the start of extraction is them moving the marker, and that happens at 3:35 ish in this video, downfall starts not long after that, but on ishimura, not the colony, I haven't seen the rest of the comics yet, but everything else flows nicely from there, with downfall and extraction both ending at the start of the first game.

The game tells you everything. You just need to pay attention to the details. If you watched this comic, the animated cartoon and played the game it should be clear that the Marker shows those images to people, so they may not remove it from the planet. Afterwards it gets removed, it makes people "halucinate" so they may return it to the planet and it can contain the necromorphs again. With Isaac, it happens. End of story.

I wonder if it's possible to combat the "infection" in any way other than simply not going near the rock or the colony?.... this needs some serious consideration; what would happen even after you are infected, after the hallucination; and after the wanting to coomit suicide, what would happen if you were put into a suicide proof cell? i wonder if thats even possible with the increased aggression of the infect, thelack of sleep, and the dreams. though it could be much worse, i suppose.

The source of the infection is the Hive-Minds influence through the Marker (and the drone-like behaviour of the "Bat" creatures). What makes the story interesting though is the fact that this particular Marker was reverse-engineered by Humans 200 years prior to its discovery on Aegis 7.
