I love all King books, but my five least favorites and books I'll probably never read again are: Lisey's Story, The Dark Half, Bag of Bones, From a Buick 8, and Doloroes Clairborn. Also, the short story collections Everything's Eventual, Just After Sunset, and Nightmares and Dreamscapes are very weak compared how incredible Night Shift and Skeleton Crew are. Just one man's opinion who has read everything he has put out.
i agree with you jano- many of SK's books are in dire need of heavy editing... i'm battling my way through 'the dome' now and at times it really isnt easy (he often appears to write simply for the sake of writing) . interestingly this isn't the case with his earlier works- back when he had an editor who had the balls to trim the fat. but i suppose this is often the case with the super-successful, they become surrounded by 'yes-men' (still my favorite author)
The only Stephen King book I stopped reading and probably will never finish is not even in there... it's Dreamcatcher... but seriously every stephen king book is awesome.. Why ? mainly because you can NEVER know how it's gonna end... like in Cujo the little boy dies at the end.. but in Gerald's Game Jessie survives... Anyone who can have a variety of stories like he does... is for me a GREAT author...And I also love how he writes... it's so beautiful ... he has a way of making you feel the story
Are you serious? You are gonna take the time to come on here and critique one of the greatest writers of the 20th century with that disjointed and misspelled essay? Have you ever written anything? Besides opinionated, misspelled, and frankly childish attacks on real writers, unlike yourself? Didn't think so. What, are you in the third grade, or something, with your childish punctuation marks, and your abrupt sentence stoppage? Fucking MORON! Now everybody sees how an illiterate crybaby writes.
also, the matter about him not being able to write original or good female characters... let me give you one example that completely tears your idea apart:
Susannah Dean
she's the main female character from the Dark Tower series, and so original and interesting that she's one of my favourite characters of all time from ANY book, not just King's.
i really don't know what you're on about, or have you only read these five king books and are secretly a stephenie meyer fan??????
Hey guyz I'm 11 and i been reading this book called Desperation from Stephen King. I read the first hundred pages but should I countinue reading or is it overrated or will i just not get it????
I am 10 years old and read desperation when I was 9. I'm not too sure though whether you would understand Desperation. If you want one that you really want to understand I would recommend Misery or IT although IT jumped around in time a bit. I would also recommend Dreamcatcher (underrated) Night Shift, Cell and The Stand. The top book by him in my opinion is Eyes of the Dragon which is another you would definitely understand. You might have finished Desperation by now. Reply!
Thank you for sharing your opinions. It is clear that you are a fan, why else would you have read 5 bad books of his if you haven't read many others you love. I too didn't like Gerald's Game. It didn't have anywhere to go so the last quarter came out of nowhere, but the real reason was because I thought it was going to go somewhere really interesting and then ignored that whole arc - when she sees something through the floorboards in the flashback - I waited for it's significance in vain.
i think that the person who mad this was an illetterate moron who doesnt like those books because thy are to hard for them and like that idiot dean koontz cause its easy
The maker of this video is a fan of Stephen King. Dean Koontz isn't easy apart from his new ones. Try Odd Thomas by Dean Koontz it is confusing at first. I love Stephen King my favorite book is The Stand.
You certainly missed the point of Gerald's Game. Just find Newsweek's critic about the book and learn about that point. Up until Gerald's Game, they used to ridicule him (reviewed Cujo and IT and trashed them) but they had to bow to his talent and excellence when they reviewed Gerald's Game. It may be a slow book but its psychological insights are incredible. Freud would have a field day.
But we agree on Needful Things (nothing else on the list). Oh, those never-ending visits to the shop...
OK, I admit, GERALD'S GAME is not that good, and ROSE MADDER has a lame ending, but NEEDFUL THINGS and DOLORES CLAIBORNE in my opinion are two of the best books King has ever written. And TOMMYKNOCKERS may have a ridiculous plot, but I found is fun to read anyway. Kind of reminded me of those trashy 50's sci-fi movies which I also really like.
If you really want to read a bad Stephen King Book, read FROM A BUICK 8. That sucks big time.
i enjoyed them all except for geralds game.. i thought it was going to be great, but i was really bored with it, but its still in my collection of SK books.....
WoW some of these are my favorite SK books, namely Rose Madder. I could argue with you for hours about this and that, the symbolism or the lack of it, whatever, opinions are just opinions and I by no means feel "violated" if somebody comes up with a different opinion than mine. I believe that we simply like/dislike a King book because of how differently we approach circunstances.
I know we all have our on opinion on SKs books and heres mine I havn't read any of these apart from gerald's game and I don't think it's one of his best but its not one of his worst I would say, telling us about the dog is maybe because some readers hate not knowing thinks in storys. And I agree its over writen on some parts like when she trys to get the water, and sometimes when she talks out loud thouse parts are ridicolous. An wat did u lik about Insomnia? it bored me it was way to long 4 me.
I thought Tommyknockers was awesome! The TV movie sucked, but that's not the first time that's happened. My only issue with that book was how they jumped the focus off of James Gardner (who, in my opinion is one of King's best characters--I wish he'd pop up somehwre else) and Bobbi Anderson, and went into the history of the town and the people, etc. When I was just dying to witness the transformation of Bobbi's "becoming", and whatever other cool gadgets they invented. I LOVED that book!!
You can't hang a price tag on his type of work. A true artist in every sense of the word. Stephen King is a household name and his legacy will probably continue on for centuries after we're dead and here YOU are, taking the TIME to make a list of his WORST books?!?
@dissolvedmusic Yes you are correct. King is entitled to release a book of lower quality every ones in a while since he's not a god, but a human being. And allso I think that you don't really see why I made this list. It isn't because I want to trash or discredit King or anything like that. It's simply because I wanted to point out the low points of his career and have discussions about it. I'm a huge SK fan. But some books he's made have been less good than others. But he's still the best
Have you seen the size of Stephen King's Bibliography? It's huge! Not only is he entitled to a lull in his creative juices, it is quite obvious that King doesn't do what he does for the money. He could have retired years ago, but he still keeps on writing, And writing GREAT stuff, too. That's because he's passionate about what he does.
Statististically, Stephen King is the best-selling novelist of all-time. That's quite an achievement. But, he's still a human being, and is entitled to put out a book here or there that's not as good as his previous ones. No one can just keep on topping themselves. This same idea applies to rock bands too
I don't think it's very decent to do a top worst books by Stephen King. I could understand doing something like top 5 worst movies of all time, but not this. First off, if you've read enough SK books to do a Top Worst list, then obviously you're a fan. Very simple analogy: if you don't like the way something tastes, you don't eat it. Secondly, it's not polite to tear up or criticize someone's work unless you feel you can step inside their circle and compete with what they do.
I've read over 30 of Stephen King's books, although in this list, only Gerald's Game and Rose Madder. I agree with you about Gerald's Game, I think that would have been good as a short story, but should have stayed as a short story, there wasn't enough plot for a whole novel. Rose Madder, on the other hand, I have to disagree about. That is one of my favourites! The plot was engaging, and King can certainly write a truly horrifying villain. The guy's name was Bill, by the way.
@vansrok1 Strangely, people keep mentioning Dreamcatcher, but that's also one of my favourites. That was the first SK book I ever read, and the one that got me completely hooked.
Frannie Goldsmith. I am hard pressed to find a better female character...wait, Suzanna Dean? Bev from IT. Carrie.Jacks mom from The Talisman, the queen of the b's, her name is escaping me. All great females, Annie from Misery. Wendy in the Shining. Donna Trenton...
@shaizerbaizer657 If you don't want to start reading his really lenghty works like IT and the stand i think Pet sematary and Cujo would be a good place to start.
Aw! I love Rose Madder! Yes I oculd have done without the Greek Mythology in there but still. My least favorite books of his are 'From a Buick 8' and 'Insomnia'
only true readers will like geralds game, if ur a guy that just likes action u probably wont like it, but it has an intersting story and no geralds game was never intended to be a short story
You're opinion is shit. Tommyknockers is the 4th worst because compared to his classics its not good? Thats ridiculous. Why dont you be happy that he even writes the books and shove this list up your ass. Troll.
You seem to have picked a certain period of his, early 90's which to me is when he's still at something close to his prime. tommyknockers i rate one of his best. If we're talking worst King i would go to a later period, when things like bag of bones, from a buick 8 and everythings eventual were fairly mediocre (for King) and alot more forgettable than his earlier books. I will also state that even Richard Laymon or Dean Koontz at his best, could not ever hope to match King at his very worst
Generally speaking, when playing the part of a literary critic, it's not a bad idea to (at a bare minimum) run your writing through a spelling checker. While I generally agree with your assessment on most of the books, reading your writing is the text equivalent of nails dragging across a chalk board.
So I finished a bunch of his books since I've last checked out this video. Now I have to say I'm surprised Dreamcatcher isn't in your list. I started off loving it (for about 250 pgs), but ended up nearly hating it. Oh, but I still like Gerald's Game (I didn't think it was boring AT ALL), but other than that, I still haven't read any others from your list (though I do own them). I'ma wait a bit before I decide to tackle them. You kinda scared me out of trying them out for a while, lol.
Ok. I've re-read Geralds game and i now realize that it's bot half bad and i take back what i've said about it earlier. I would even give it an 8 out of 10. If dreamcatcher book is half as bad as the movie (i recently watched it for the first time) it should easily replace Geralds game on the list.
@JanoSeishu420 It's totally cool if you didn't like Gerald's Game -- I just disagree with you, lol. We all have the right to like/dislike whatever. I hope you didn't change your mind because of people disagreeing with you. :) It wasn't great, for sure, but I did enjoy it. And, yeah, Dreamcatcher was the hardest book to get through. Lol.
i have noticed that every time that someone has another opinion(like for example gerad's game) you suddenly change your mind!STICK TO YOUR OPINION AND IDEAS! Gerald's game??? My opinion???BOOOOORING!!!!!!and noone can change my opinion.sorry if i'm being aggressive.
@missrock98 Nah, it's cool. Don't know if i can agree with you though. In the case of Geralds game. I acctually changed my mind about that one because i re-read it now and really think that another book should take its place...anyway, Thanks for subscribing:)
I don't think you really got the point of Gerald's Game. From what I gather, you're a very action-oriented person. Geralds Game, despite the sexual plot, had a very high-brow meaning to it. So I think that the story of the dog was pretty important to the point of the novel.
While I did enjoy Gerald's Game, I do have to agree with your opinion on the freaky guy, lol. I thought there would actually be a reason as to why he was there. The explanation felt useless and tacked-on in the last minute. That being said, the book entertained me. I kept wondering, what will I do in that situation? I really wanted to know how/if she'll escape. A good read, in my opinion. And it wasn't too long...now, INSOMNIA -- that was hella long, lol.
In addition to my previous comment, the above is actually nothing but a rant on King's writing of female characters. The ultimate point you made toward the end was "Dean Koontz is better at female characters than king is".
Right, then i succeded. My biggest gripe with these king books is the fact that he's not very good at female character anbd authors like Dean Koontz are better at it.
@JanoSeishu420 Utter nonsense. Dean Koontz female prototype: Beautiful like a model? Check! Haunted with a sorrowful past? Check! Utterly intelligent and rich but very sensible and soft inside waiting for her prince? Check! Interestingly they either do not have any job or have a very charismatic one, never a teacher or a supermarket cashier? Check! Up until this comment, I thought you have some charming ideas but now this makes it an illusion.
Gerald's Game huh? The history for the dog was only a few pages long, and it was very amusing when it called her "bitchmaster". If anything, I felt it built up a sort of empathy with a character that would've otherwise been seen as an antagonist. The history actually gave the dog character, and motive. If you can't see the value in that, then I can't give you the authority as a book critic. One star because most of each book was a single rant that failed to make the above "Stephen King's worst"
about your comment on king's "weak" female characters, you SEVERELY need to read the dark tower series. detta would rip your fucking balls off and feed them to you.
not trying to be offensive, that's just the character.
seriously, sit down and read king's masterpiece. (dark tower starts with the gunslinger)
it's not as gorey as his classics but it's worth it.
Im reading the darktower series and is currently on book 5 in the series. Detta isn't exactly weak, but take a look at the majority of kings female characters they're often just a tiny step up from being a total cliche of a damsel in distress, or something in the same vein. You get the idea.
Yeah, I agree. I'm currently reading Insomnia, which is a fantasic book, but I'm just extremely annoyed that basically all the main female characters are beautiful and back down to men.
Too bad i haven't read those two yet. I read allmost everything King ever written except for FAB8 Dreamcatcher and some of his newest ones like Just past sunset. Maybe i'll make another list in the fututre if they are acctually worse.
I can understand your problems with both Needful things and Tommyknockers, especially Tommyknockers, but at the same time, I didn't have much of a problem with them.
And I totaly agree on Rose Madder, the whole supernatural thing destroyed it.
Needful Things and The Tommyknockers kecked ass! Needful Things was just one of those "where the hell is this going" kind of book. All of that destruction and death started with such a misdemeanor crime as throwing mud on some drying sheets. The Tommyknockers was a little boring at times, but I felt happy at the end.
I promise you the series will get alot better. Especially with part 3. The gunslinger is boring. And you know what? You can skip Gunslinger all along it's just such a short book and the whole story is brought down in the ''what happened in the last entry'' part in the begining of every new version of the DT books. You won't miss anything important if you do so
Pretty great video! It couldn't be better! You explained to me why you didn't like these books. Great video! But I did like Needful Things. It was awsome! I did think that there are a lot of characters, I got confused, but the story itself was excellent. You could put in this list The Eyes of the Dragon! That one was pretty bad ¬¬°. Ridiculous! I'll follow your advice, I wont buy Rose Madder but I will buy Dolores Claiborne just to see if SK can really write a good story about a heroin!
Have you considered the possibility of taking one or two courses in basic, third grade level English grammar? And when you're all grown up, you may want to consider an introductory course in interpersonal relationships, too.

Generally speaking, when playing the part of a literary critic, it's not a bad idea to (at a bare minimum) run your writing through a spelling checker. While I generally agree with your assessment on most of the books, reading your writing is the text equivalent of nails dragging across a chalk board.

LOL Dreamcatcher was another stinker..the movie was actually better!

I actually really liked Dreamcatcher, but the movie sure did suck.
Christ0meth 2 years ago 2
So I finished a bunch of his books since I've last checked out this video. Now I have to say I'm surprised Dreamcatcher isn't in your list. I started off loving it (for about 250 pgs), but ended up nearly hating it. Oh, but I still like Gerald's Game (I didn't think it was boring AT ALL), but other than that, I still haven't read any others from your list (though I do own them). I'ma wait a bit before I decide to tackle them. You kinda scared me out of trying them out for a while, lol.
RullyisJRM 2 years ago
Ok. I've re-read Geralds game and i now realize that it's bot half bad and i take back what i've said about it earlier. I would even give it an 8 out of 10. If dreamcatcher book is half as bad as the movie (i recently watched it for the first time) it should easily replace Geralds game on the list.
JanoSeishu420 2 years ago
@JanoSeishu420 It's totally cool if you didn't like Gerald's Game -- I just disagree with you, lol. We all have the right to like/dislike whatever. I hope you didn't change your mind because of people disagreeing with you. :) It wasn't great, for sure, but I did enjoy it. And, yeah, Dreamcatcher was the hardest book to get through. Lol.

your dont understand the books thats why youl die soon
SolidSnake1884 2 years ago
Hey, you have your opinion. Don't mind about them.

@JanoSeishu420
i have noticed that every time that someone has another opinion(like for example gerad's game) you suddenly change your mind!STICK TO YOUR OPINION AND IDEAS! Gerald's game??? My opinion???BOOOOORING!!!!!!and noone can change my opinion.sorry if i'm being aggressive.
missrock98 1 year ago
@missrock98 Nah, it's cool. Don't know if i can agree with you though. In the case of Geralds game. I acctually changed my mind about that one because i re-read it now and really think that another book should take its place...anyway, Thanks for subscribing:)
JanoSeishu420 1 year ago
I don't think you really got the point of Gerald's Game. From what I gather, you're a very action-oriented person. Geralds Game, despite the sexual plot, had a very high-brow meaning to it. So I think that the story of the dog was pretty important to the point of the novel.
smellslikechildren1 2 years ago
While I did enjoy Gerald's Game, I do have to agree with your opinion on the freaky guy, lol. I thought there would actually be a reason as to why he was there. The explanation felt useless and tacked-on in the last minute. That being said, the book entertained me. I kept wondering, what will I do in that situation? I really wanted to know how/if she'll escape. A good read, in my opinion. And it wasn't too long...now, INSOMNIA -- that was hella long, lol.

I agree Red Madder shouldn'tve had the supernatural shit in it. Without that it would've been a great book.

In addition to my previous comment, the above is actually nothing but a rant on King's writing of female characters. The ultimate point you made toward the end was "Dean Koontz is better at female characters than king is".
Porrages 2 years ago
Right, then i succeded. My biggest gripe with these king books is the fact that he's not very good at female character anbd authors like Dean Koontz are better at it.
JanoSeishu420 2 years ago
@JanoSeishu420 What about his book Carrie?
TheZelephant 1 year ago
@JanoSeishu420 Utter nonsense. Dean Koontz female prototype: Beautiful like a model? Check! Haunted with a sorrowful past? Check! Utterly intelligent and rich but very sensible and soft inside waiting for her prince? Check! Interestingly they either do not have any job or have a very charismatic one, never a teacher or a supermarket cashier? Check! Up until this comment, I thought you have some charming ideas but now this makes it an illusion.
Actuallysalemslot 1 year ago
Gerald's Game huh? The history for the dog was only a few pages long, and it was very amusing when it called her "bitchmaster". If anything, I felt it built up a sort of empathy with a character that would've otherwise been seen as an antagonist. The history actually gave the dog character, and motive. If you can't see the value in that, then I can't give you the authority as a book critic. One star because most of each book was a single rant that failed to make the above "Stephen King's worst"
Porrages 2 years ago 2
lol funny ending
MrIlwc 2 years ago
about your comment on king's "weak" female characters, you SEVERELY need to read the dark tower series. detta would rip your fucking balls off and feed them to you.
not trying to be offensive, that's just the character.
seriously, sit down and read king's masterpiece. (dark tower starts with the gunslinger)
it's not as gorey as his classics but it's worth it.
silverpyro19 2 years ago
Im reading the darktower series and is currently on book 5 in the series. Detta isn't exactly weak, but take a look at the majority of kings female characters they're often just a tiny step up from being a total cliche of a damsel in distress, or something in the same vein. You get the idea.
JanoSeishu420 2 years ago
Yeah, I agree. I'm currently reading Insomnia, which is a fantasic book, but I'm just extremely annoyed that basically all the main female characters are beautiful and back down to men.

@JanoSeishu420 Susan in Salem's Lot? Susan in Wizard and Glass? The mother in Cujo? Vicky in Firestarter?
Actuallysalemslot 1 year ago
First of all, King shouldn't look to Koontz for anything.
What about From a Buick 8 and Dreamcatcher. They were worse than any of the ones you mentioned.
trevordunbar19 2 years ago
Too bad i haven't read those two yet. I read allmost everything King ever written except for FAB8 Dreamcatcher and some of his newest ones like Just past sunset. Maybe i'll make another list in the fututre if they are acctually worse.
JanoSeishu420 2 years ago
Actually some of his newest books are on par with his classics. Both Just After Sunset and Duma Key are amazing.
trevordunbar19 2 years ago
I can understand your problems with both Needful things and Tommyknockers, especially Tommyknockers, but at the same time, I didn't have much of a problem with them.
And I totaly agree on Rose Madder, the whole supernatural thing destroyed it.
raggsvettma 2 years ago
Can't agree man, I respect your views but sorry don't agree.
And Dean Koontz has written some crappy novels.
A lot are good to great but some... were just crap.
Just my view.
Oh have you read any Richard Laymon or jack ketchum?
EndlessLaymon 2 years ago
I've read one novell by Jack Ketchum a long time ago. I think it was called ''the girl next door''
JanoSeishu420 2 years ago
Cool. Check out "The Lost" and "Joyride [Roadkill]" by Ketchum if you get the chance.
I'll be checking out some of your other videos soon.
:)
EndlessLaymon 2 years ago
Laymon and Ketcham are both outstanding. Laymon is arguably the most influential horror writer of his time.
trevordunbar19 2 years ago
@trevordunbar19 May I ask whom Laymon has influenced?
Actuallysalemslot 1 year ago
Needful Things and The Tommyknockers kecked ass! Needful Things was just one of those "where the hell is this going" kind of book. All of that destruction and death started with such a misdemeanor crime as throwing mud on some drying sheets. The Tommyknockers was a little boring at times, but I felt happy at the end.
poofer89 2 years ago
The Gunslinger is worst of them all...should Icontinue to read other dark tower books? cuz seriously The Gunslinger was all rubbish
Baghdounis 2 years ago 2
I promise you the series will get alot better. Especially with part 3. The gunslinger is boring. And you know what? You can skip Gunslinger all along it's just such a short book and the whole story is brought down in the ''what happened in the last entry'' part in the begining of every new version of the DT books. You won't miss anything important if you do so
JanoSeishu420 2 years ago
Pretty great video! It couldn't be better! You explained to me why you didn't like these books. Great video! But I did like Needful Things. It was awsome! I did think that there are a lot of characters, I got confused, but the story itself was excellent. You could put in this list The Eyes of the Dragon! That one was pretty bad ¬¬°. Ridiculous! I'll follow your advice, I wont buy Rose Madder but I will buy Dolores Claiborne just to see if SK can really write a good story about a heroin!
derick78b 2 years ago
Yes! "Eyes of the Dragon" was truly God-awful! I'd almost forgotten about how distasteful that was. Yikes!

Have you considered the possibility of taking one or two courses in basic, third grade level English grammar? And when you're all grown up, you may want to consider an introductory course in interpersonal relationships, too.

The Eyes Of The Dragon was awesome.
