I always follow the line with my eyes when I drive back to Weest Timperley from the Trafford Centre, but have never seen any movement. My wife says she has once, I think.
@eltonator There is usually activity weekdays and is sometimes late at night. I have seen fully loaded trains through the evening weekdays 8-11:30 pm.
@jamescooling It usually sees a few container trains a day. The diesel shunter (switcher( loco brings the train from/to the electrified reception sidings by the main line. The trains are usually hauled on the main line by a class 66 (diesel) or 86, 90 or 92 (electric).
The line to Containerbase by the Trafford Centre sees a lot of Intermodal Traffic (Containers) but you are right about the north line into the centre of Trafford Park. This used to carry starch tankers from Cerestar, and a daily flow of scrap metal to South Wales. It would be nice to see this line with traffic again. I have not seen any traffic on it since 1993, I think.
Yes, the short line railway (owned by the Manchester Ship Canal Company) has its own signals that are linked to the road traffic lights. The engine is a standard type of diesel switcher here in the UK. The engine in question was built in the late 1950s but the design dates from the late 1930s.

I thought the entire rail network at Trafford Park had been mothballed?

Thanks, chest.
Does the engine cause the traffic signals to change?
Have they ever tried using rubber-tired tractors to move railcars?
They could uncouple and freely drive around from one track to another without having to go to a switch and come back?

surreal. It's almost like a train is going across the road.
