  • What is the little gnome saying?

  • Anyone else think Zach talks kind of like Chris Walken?

  • I know this sucks but I think I know how to feel foil card damn my stupid friend for taking by Civilized Scholar(Foil) I wanted it for collections but now I could collect another foil but its a common well at least it's my first achievement...P.s. I'm a beginner to MTG

  • Info about the cards:

wizards dot com slash magic slash tcg slash article dot aspx?x=mtg slash tcg slash innistrad slash mechanics

  • On a topic, I like the double-faced cards idea, but how it would work if you see cards in opponent's hand?

  • Dobule faced cards, what does that mean? Double faced all the way!

  • Wow, Mark Rosewater really has such an unexpected voice.

He sounds more like an infomercial commentator.

I supposed MaRo to have that kind of a "fable uncle"-like voice, if you know what i mean :D

  • When a double faced card dies, does it return to it's human form? I.e. a werewolf dies, does it die, and stay in the graveyard in werewolf form?

  • Got some new design ideas for next expansion: Double sized cards and cards that smell!

  • Garruk is now DTF

    that's right, down to flip.

  • You do realize you don't have to play with double-face cards. Jeez. It is not like they are making you play them.

  • @Elestareus That doesn't make them suck any less, does it?

  • @Elestareus well if you're a Spike/tournament player and want a competitive deck, you want to play the best cards you can get - and you bet there are a bunch of double-faced cards among them...

The idea is nice, but double-faced cards are just so awkward to play with outside of Magic Online. It's a big middle finger especially to casual players.

  • Wizards are obviously trolling. First Level-Up, now this.

  • I give up on Magic after they added Planeswalker. Wayyyy too many new mechanics and new abilities.

  • 12:09 OMG the real massive howl!!

  • Stop teasing me with my werewolves,

    GIVE THEM TO ME

  • Does no one notice the obvious flaw of having your card revealed for say your next draw? I mean it will show, and if you use sleeves to cover it, you have the cumbersome need to pull it out and reverse it every time the rules say so, or have to buy 2 of 1 card with both sleeved and one on the side only there to be used like this.

Well done. We spend more money over bad design or face the choice of not playing them.

  • @TZstarcraft Well, the sleeve works perfectly fine, so no one will know what's your next card... But I agree it's an awful design. They could just have used FLIP like in kamigawa.

  • @rantifusaxp Yeah I researched more into it, you can have a proxy card (Which they provide when you buy the Dual Faced Card) if you don't have sleeves, basically this has the normal back and once the Dual Faced proxy is played, you can then just exchange the proxy with the real thing. So it's not all bad, thankfully they include it for free otherwise it would be ridiculous.

  • @rantifusaxp I also, if your interested made a Magic video on my channel, for the game Magic the Gathering 2012 Duels of the planeswalkers.

  • This is going to be kind of silly for draft. At a glance you can see what is coming/going around. In my opinion, this was a bad idea for card design. Most of the cards that I've seen spoiled so far look interesting.

  • 'unleashed a massive howl' lmao. I'm so hyped to play this jsodfslfjsdlfsd

  • 7:52 lol

  • Folks, flip cards had some mechanical disadvantages inherent to the design of the card you may or may not be aware of. For one example, tapping said cards was clunky and was not intuitive. I am one of the few people I know of out of my circle of MTG friends that has faith in MaRo et al. until they prove to me they have messed up. Give the cards a chance, gang.

  • It's like how bloodthirst forced new players to play creatures post-combat. This will force new players to use sleeves.

  • And yet another mechanic that only makes sense within the block and yet another tribe. I like to build my own decks, damnit!

  • what a gay idea

  • 07:52 = OWNED on Youtube!

  • What's the big deal? If your playing with sleeves, you take the card out and flip it over when it transforms. The only people who should be complaining are the people who don't own any sleeves. (Although they really should anyway)

  • @Dragonfable123 sleeve or not, it's a terrible design...

  • Nice, now you are forced to use sleeves to play? Guess WotC invested some money to the sleevecompanies :)

Honestly this is BS, just testing the limits how ready players are to buy optional stuff to play MTG. Maybe we get little dragon miniatures next to be 5/5 flyers, only 1,99$ a piece from your local magic dealer.

  • @Arikki1 It's not like you're forced, in the booster packs you'll get a list card with a normal magic back so that you can put it in your deck instead of the double faced card. In the list you mark the card it represents and when it comes out, you can out the doube faced card you want instead of the one you got into play.

  • People need to get over it and buy sleeves why are people complaining about using something that will protect there cards

  • dude at 10:06 needs to calm down with the energy drinks....

  • how are you supposed play with double faced cards in sleeves?

  • @idkDave070707 You take them out and flip it. Duh.

  • @idkDave070707 use clear sleeves on the double faced cards and still use the checklist cards if it annoys you to take them in and out of the sleeve. thats what I will do

  • Comment removed

  • OMG, End of the world!

  • I don't understand why people are taking this lightly! Double face cards are a groundbreaking step in MTG, so get used to it.

  • i think the double faced cards was a stupid idea

  • And what about triple faced cards?

  • is it just me or did everyone see that guy with the blue shirt at 7:11

  • i can heard firework in the background

  • Redundant mechanic...flip cards would do as well.

  • i am curious

  • 00:19 Made me ashamed to play magic. Talk about making WAY to big of a deal out of this.

  • @gogogadgetboomstick playing magic didn't already make you ashamed to play magic?

  • The Eldrazi BETTER come back around soon!

    also, I HATE that idea!

  • I really wanna see that "possessed little girl"

  • Wow double face cards... Pokemon and so many other games did that already. I believe they are called Evolution cards in Pokemon and Digimons.

Why does Mark Rosewater sound like that? He is not wearing a braces. Is he wearing fake teeth? He sounds like that fat guy from World of Warcraft video, Francis.

People been telling WOTC to make this like 13 years ago. Good job WOTC, it only took you the lost of 80% of your players before you listen.

  • White Wolf did this in Rage CCG in 1996!

  • @Pyr0mantic Oh yes and it was an amazing game that died in their hands. Bastards...

  • Every time wizards get a new idea, there's a million geeks getting sand in all their holes. Every. Time. How do they live with themselves? Is it the idea that their first impression trumps dozens of professional game developers who worked for months? Yes, their purity of wisdom, their sheer MTG intuition puts them in a position to label something BAD FOR ALL.

Or maybe they're just noobs who don't want to have fun and maybe even want to spoil it for others too.

  • @egarran yes we do. there have been a number of public mistakes they have made and PUBLICLY apologized for that many of us saw at first glance. eg. skullclamp.

  • awful awful awful awful....

Did I mention it's an Awful idea.

Please someone fire the idiot who did this.

  • Why don't they just go back to the cards that transform upside down? That way you get the exact same thing, but you still have the Magic back of the card. This seems like a really pointless idea, since they've already done it in a way.

  • @GarciaCornbread They didn't go with the flip card design because they said there wasn't enough room on them. Also with almost every pack of cards comes a checklist you can use as a porxy till you draw the actually card and play it. This will save people in draft and people with no sleeves. People need to stop worrying, MTG has already thought of that.

  • Horrible idea for such a draft heavy game. These cards shit on draft so hard. And all sleeves that are not completely 100% opaque just became illegal. I really think they fucked up on this. Time will tell.

  • Doubled sided cards might be a cool concept but they're going to cause so many problems.

Sure they work fine when they're sleeved, just take it out of the sleeve flip it and put it back in when they transform but what about the more casual players who don't sleeve their cards? Do you require people to have sleeves to enter organized events?

What about drafting? Pick one of these and every player at the table now knows what color you're playing.

  • Damn some people are really stupid.

First of all, some people actually LIKE transform, second, THEY ARE 20(!) CARDS TOTAL in innistrad first block,THERE ARE 200 MORE FOR YOU TO PLAY IF YOU DONT LIKE EM(what maybe 5 transform related cards more)

I also feel a little frustrated with a loss of magic back, it could be made flip cards? maybe, BUT there would be much much worse with all those abilitys ,not to mention the flavor, there is no place for flavor, and FLAVOR ROCKS.imagine a flip PW.god no

  • Mark Rosewater has the worst voice.

  • @Waltztheplank INCONCEIVABLE!

  • The idea is interesting but I don't like the removing of the MTG back.

What happened to the landscaped two card in one type of card? They could've named it two-faced cards. :))

  • Time to invest in clear sleeves....oh wait. There goes the element of surprise.

  • Comment removed

  • mad scientists are big part of whore :D

  • "is that a werewolf in your hand??".. "um noo..." ,lol

  • Um how does that work when you draw your hand??

  • @Roclobstrxxx or you could actually look at the card rules? You can only play them in opaque sleeves, or by proxying them with the checklist card.

  • these pax videos made me not want to play mtg anymore

  • for everyone complaining about double sided cards...Richard Garfield is ok with it... if the man who invented Magic is ok with a mechanic that can completely change the game, it must have SOME worth and value. Give it a chance before completely dismissing it

  • so...they better start producing clear ultra pro tournament sleeves...this is the single most stupid mechanic that I have ever seen...not good whatsoever.

  • Double-faced cards: The single most awkward game mechanic Wizards has ever printed. It requires you to play with a kind of sideboard with the actual cards (does your opponent get to know that is there?). If you don't use sleeves you need those checklists which are awkward (How does that work in draft? Does the store have to provide dozens of those?). If you play sleeves you have to take it out of the sleeve, flip it, and put it back in. And the day night cycle doesn't work for me at all.

  • 7:12 weird gay guy dancing weirdly.

  • Comment removed

  • So, suddenly forgot about the Flip in Kamigawa and created a new system, more complicated, to do the same than the old kamigawa flip.

  • @rantifusaxp flip doesn't provide any room in the card text box.

  • @Bassnation1000 Sorry I didn't notice the HUGE amount of text the cards have... Come on... the only reason they use this super new super awesome two faced cards is publicity... flip provides enough room...

  • i am seeing werewolf/wolf decks floating around for awhile

  • The hype was incredible lol

  • Fiirst off, I love horror, so I'm a little biased when it comes to this set. I just hope it turns out as awesome as it should. Anyway, when I first heard about the double-faced cards I was skeptical, but after seeing some of them I'm actually kind of excited to try them out. I don't get why people are so upset about sleeves. It takes like a second to take a card out of a sleeve, so I'm sure you'll all survive.

  • @yugmalm they take away damage from the stack which makes the game simpler and changing game mechanics names from to the graveyard to dies is just dumbing it down and the flip mechanic has been around already and its not anything complicated.

  • Wizards: Yo dawg, I heard you like magic cards. So I but some magic cards on your magic cards so you can play while you play.

  • Holy crap MaRo is a leprechaun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Good music, good looking women, alcohol, dance floor... where is this Club Magic, where is my sanctuary?

  • Okay, they probably didn't think about about tournaments....or sleeves...

  • @SmartyPantsDash Yeah, they did. You may put the doublefaced card directly into a deck, day side facing out, if you are using solid backed sleeves. Otherwise, you must put the checklist card into your deck, and use the double faced card only on the battlefield.

  • They needed to think outside the box. So they used the other side of it.

  • so will both the sides be foil if its a foil?

  • @RiesenZero Yes!

  • @smashbros: You want a double-faced planeswalker? Garruk is going to be one ("Garruk Relentless" is on the checklist card for double-faced cards). I don't know if I like double-faced cards, but I don't hate them. Playing with and against them at the release will answer that for me.

  • @sarroth Bet he is the 5 ability one if you count both sides!

  • I've been using the "checklist method" for place holders in the deck ever since i got those magic backed soldier tokens with Tezz v. Elspeth. I use those tokens for things like primeval titan, phyrexian obliterator, and emrakul, so i dont mess them up when not using sleeves cuz 5 sleeved decks wouldnt fit in my box. so i really dont see a problem with using the checklists as placeholders

  • MaRo sounds so different from what I imagined...

  • @jasenator1 I know he is all squeaky and you expect a slower paced less hyper dude from the articles...

  • and they come out the month of my bday!

  • lol Grand Abolisher

  • @premtgboy56 I'm sorry. Five minutes was pretty bad, I'd have gone insane after eight years.

  • so wizards how long till we have a core set of dual/tri color planeswalkers? :)

  • WHUT

  • Zach shakes his head a lot, so I'm not buying this set.

  • @Hauss: The point isn't to let people know what the card is. There's a checklist card with a traditional magic back to use as a proxy in hiddens zones (hand, library, exile) so you don't reveal the double-faced card to an opponent before its in play. In fact, card sleeves are one of the reasons Wizards felt safe using this mechanic.

  • I didn't care about Innistrad before, but now I have a reason to really not care. I guess Wizards forgot about sleeves that 99% of people play with. Also when a flip card comes up, guess EVERYONE knows what your next card is. It's like having deck control on your opponent w/o having to do anything. How stupid... :L

  • wow thats a spectacular spot for interviews.. ...... geez dude go into a conference room or something.

  • When he was talking to Brady, was that a remix of Tom Petty's "Free Fallin'" in the background?

  • lol maro sounds like a gnome wizard or something :p

  • As if it wasn't difficult enough to remember single faced cards. "Flip.."~ "WTF IS THAT SHIT!"

  • I want double faced plainswalkers!

  • Okay, to everyone that is griping about the whole situation with double-sided cards, it is not that bad. Innistrad is also not undraftable and DEFINITELY not unplayable at the casual level. I mean, I know a TON of people who would love to play with those double-sided cards. Also, just use the tokens or random rules cards. I mean, they may know that you have the double-sided card, but how will they know what color it is. I am an avid drafting and I think this is definitely draft material.

  • @mobrebel if you look carefully they have color maker next to the subtype that will tell anyone what colo is it. Common sense is needed to know due to the primary face card color :P.

  • @Turrick16 unless stated other wise

  • This is why I don't play very much anymore. Good video though. And for the record, Rosewater rules.

  • At 10:28 "We wanted to do something that has never been done before"... There is a reason for that you douche. Also, congrats you have accomplished that. You have made a set basically undraftable without giving out vital information of other players.

  • Psh, screw Trick-or-treating I'm having an Innistrad draft on Halloween!

  • This is THE DUMBEST IDEA EVER!!!!

  • I'm glad they could dance well -_-

  • SO much for card covers

  • awesome in mtgo but crap in paper... too greedy as always mark.. just too greedy haha

  • How will I use sleeves???

  • @jbieri2 Get 8 copies of them? ._. not really liking it

  • Maro is such a happy dude lol

  • There's a dude in the background doing the bloodelf dance.....

  • wtf?

  • I like the "magicplayer-dancemoves" in the background....

  • Flip cards are utalised becuase its a more shocking transformation like Dr Jykle and Mr Hyde. FLip cards have that abstract art that you know the change, with them its more surprising.

  • Its just a gimmick rlly. I wonder how resleeving your double sided cards each turn is gonna work out, it'll probably be pretty amusing tbh lol

  • I can't help but watch the awkward people dancing in the background.

  • A double-faced card all the way across the sky! Oh my god oh my god!!! Double-faced cards all the way! It's so intense!

Also, I love Jeremy's Zod shirt.

  • I bet the 5 ability planeswalker is a double-faced card, 3 abilities on 1 side, with the ultimate being transform, and 2 on the other side.

  • @GrandLordBalmung that seems to be what it is since garruk is on the checklist card

  • heres an idea get a job n buy some fuckin sleeves n stop ur bitching or get mommy to buy u them

as far as draft goes take the token and keep it on top of ur picks, besides good drafters will have an idea of what ur drafting neway, or hell take one werewolf card keep it on top of ur picks and make fellow drafters think ur in r/g

"technically" ur not supposed to look at ur other pod members as they take cards so it will be interesting to see what they do for drafts at big events

  • you know people are going to start getting their hands on ludevic's test subject and proliferating the hatchling counters in standard

  • dont know how to draft dbl faced cards? dont be a retard and fan your hand

  • this is fucking horrible...

  • this is such a stupid idea that i might quit playing competitive magic

  • "possessed little girl" O.o

  • guess i should sell all my sleves

  • @fields0852 Unless you actually want to play with the double sided cards. . .

  • @fields0852 there is nothing wrong with taking out your cards, flippin' em' over and putting them back into the sleeve... that way you can narrate the story of your deck better, saying to your opponent..." This is the story of how i wiped the floor with your ass"...

  • Yeah, see, how do you draft doublesided without, y'know, GIVING AWAY WHAT YOU PICKED?

  • @FloatLikeABee You have to give away what you picked. On the official article about it on dailymtg(dot)com, they say that players may try to keep it secretive, but more than likely you just have to give it away. It's not like only one person at the table will have this problem--everyone will.

  • @FloatLikeABee use the official checklist proxy cards. it's a genius solution. no giving away info and no de-sleeving etc. checklist goes in your deck, then you treat the double-faced cards like pseudo tokens.

  • @purklefluff Yeah I guess that works. It still gives away that the card is in the pack and it's not like they're instants/flash so they're not *as* bomb-y as they could be; pegging a player to them won't be too terrible, it's just that it feels like a decision that moves the game away from one of my favorite formats, the 3x3 team draft.

  • i couldnt stop watching those guys dancing....

  • LOL the guys dancing in the back are hilarious

  • well then, i guess players will have to better utilize the ability to BLUFF what you're drafting IRL (noob drafters <3 MtGO; no face to face interaction).

from now on, always *ALWAYS* take the token behind your pick. duh. grow up and quit whining about every little thing WoTC does to evolve the game that's been continually running (on schedule) for 18 years!!

i can't wait for the bawlbabies that are gonna sprout when the 5-ability planeswalker is spoiler. :D

  • @neond1984 Im not sure if you are referring to token as token/tip card, or checklist card. But anyways, Mark rosewater confirmed that the checklist card will take the place of a land. I dont know about you, but my local card shop keeps lands in the drafts still as it is part of the pack. People take the lands 14th at times to signal the colors they aren't in. This means drafters at my shop now must pick the DFCs and hope to wheel the checklist card unless the drafting rules change.

  • @neond1984 About the 5-ability walker: it'll probably have them split between the 2 forms, with 3 or 4 abilities on one side, one of which transforms it, and the other 1 or 2 on the other side. The transformation is an activated ability because, as a planeswalker, it would have a much more strong will, and could control the transformation.

  • makes me wonder if "Break Open" is really the worst card ever made anymore...

  • honestly one of the dumbest things i have ever seen in magic they keep turning the game into a simpler versoin so more idiots can play.

  • @zedain88

i completely agree...i've really disliked that they've had to dumb down the game so others can play, and i have to play at a lesser power level.

  • @zedain88 lol what makes it simple? These cards have mechanics that are equally as difficult to use as past cards.

  • drafting werewolves will be quite hard...

  • Comment removed

  • Just so everyone stops complaining about this, Wizards is creating a card that can go into your deck to represent two faced cards, it has a regular magic backing and I'm sure there will be enough of them to go round at drafts and such.

  • . . . . . . huh? . . . . . . . huh . . . . . . .

  • Comment removed

  • if u dont have sleeves at a innistrad draft your screwed XD

  • How do I even draft this set if there are Double-Faced cards ?!

  • Hopefully i remember to take my sleeves with me to the Innistrad prerelease....

  • Does ANYONE else remember Rage? The Werewolf TCG where this was the main mechanic?

  • I'm not sure that I understand how these shuffle into decks. Can someone explain this to me?

  • @ServeTheBeaver You take the card. Put it in a deck, and move the cards around so that they randomize.

  • @ServeTheBeaver You use a sleeve or proxy it if you don't use sleeves.

  • wtf the day/night cycle sounds amazing! why did they not do that...
