Richie kamuca was extreemly underrated what a great tenor man. ...of that time my favorites were Richie and Harold Land. Russ was great as was conte, you should check out "Double Play" with Russ , Andre Previn , and Shelly together it's a keeper!!
Kamuca did not play alto except to fill in. 100% tenor man. His work with Bill Perkins and Jack Montrose made amazing contribution to Los Angeles and West Coast scene in the late 50s and early 60s. He also played with Bobby Brookmeyer and Jack Sheldon on the old Merv Griffin Show.
And Conte was a beautiful person. Always had time to talk to aspiring young musicians. Ran into him in AAA parking lot in Los Angeles and said how much I loved his work with Art Pepper. He stopped and talked to me for 10 minutes. As an 18 year old kid, I was totally stunned by his kindness and humility. Miss him and his beautiful solos.
Hello Mark - This Shelly Manne piece is awsome...I saw your comments on Butch Miles, the clip I saw was flawless, with his stop and start brilliance, I've always wanted to see a drummer do that with my realisng my thinking with amatuer chops using my wood-sticks. Thanks Bud.
Great band. Terrible camera work.

Dumb mistake on my part. Kamuca was strictly a tenor player. And a fine one.

Kamuca also did some baritone work with various big bands ~

These are some of the most underrated individuals on their respective instruments in jazz. Great stuff!
