  • The Boeing B727 was used longer than the B707..in the early 1980S most carriers retired their B707 but the B727 continued flying into the 1990S.

  • wheres the la ghetto?

  • holy crap old LAX

  • Imagine a current promo video making a joke about the seat belt extender. And imagine actually being able to order special meals instead of paying for sack lunches at the gate.

  • It was just as shown. Flying was an 'earned' priviledge afforded to those of means and need. Now it is a mass transportation of 'fairness and equality', sort of like a bus ride. As Huxley is on track, and the 'Leveling of society' is continued as he proposed, it will evolve further to a cattle truck ride (prods) similar to the third world countries. Huxley said the USA was so far advanced that it would have to be 'forced' down to the level of the rest of the 'less fortunate' world.. 'Forced'.

  • 21:10. I didn't know they had i-phones back then.

  • @seoceancrosser hahaha lol

  • what a beautiful time was that....i wish that time to come back once again....

  • I ahve to say, it's still a bit like this in the Middle east

  • @johnster1964 and that is why we in the us look like dicks for messing ourselves up...

  • All those Convair jets!

  • Sad how flying was such a great experience back then. I now refuse to fly commercial due to the TSA goons.

  • don;t think flying was THAT great back then. While customer service was somewhat better back then, this wasn't the whole story all the time. there were rude people, late flights, bad communication, lost luggage. Its like when you see commercials now a days- you think that burger is gonna look like it looks on the commercials? People 20 years from now will say "we use to eat good burgers back then" when we all know how shitty fast food burgers are now. Nice video though!

  • funny to see how little some of the terminals have changed from the outside - however , inside hawoc now reigns :-)

  • I'll bet you $20 that those flight attendants are still flying the line today. ;)

  • you gut somthin fow me?

  • Just so we're clear, "these people" were not you and me. During this time routes and fares were regulated on a cost plus basis. That means you and I could not afford to fly. Then we finally figured out that airline seats were valued by consumers as nothing more than a commodities. Alfred Kahn deregulated the industry, cost was driven to marginal cost, and everyone could now fly and were able to increase their social welfare. It's really very simple. Quit your complaining and go see mom.

  • See Don Draper @ 3:40

  • a comerical that is 20 mins 30scenonds long. wow!

  • That guy needed a seat-belt extender? I thought that only happened in recent times

  • i'am 17 and i fly regularly (family ^^) ...and i'm just amazed by the 50's 60's 70's ...flying seemed better, more pleasant and people were indeed better mannered ..but that's just me

  • Comment removed

  • Well, I wouldn't want to really go back to the 60s, thank you; I was born in 66, but those times were different for air travel, i guess. Noticed which population cross section got to fly back in those days???

  • It was a different time, I guess; brings back nostalgia. For those of us that started flying commercial back in the 60-70, you flew dressed, that is, not in ripped jeans, nor wearing sandals, etc, but with formal attire.

  • i wish i can just go in a time machine and go to the 60's

  • Those were the days.....

  • Good old days, Americans were so polite back then :)

  • man, very nice people back then... lots of people these days need to take notes on this video!

  • @killerandom2 Keep in mind that this is staged promotional film and no more true to real life than a promotional video would be today. I don't think people were any more polite or courteous at that time than they are now. Most people are polite. Airline service was more luxurious but also much more expensive.

  • Comment removed

  • @markhinr Those of us who are old enough KNOW people were indeed more polite and courteous back then. I worked for the airlines back then and it was very different. Flying was usually a pleasant experience that people looked forwarded to and enjoyed. Now, it's a chore.

As far as the money goes, I remember being able to fly as a student with money earned from part time jobs. I bet it took a student the same amount of time to earn a trans-con trip then as it does today.

  • @knmdefays You had to have money to fly back then.

  • Comment removed

  • @markhinr yea your after thinking about it for a while

  • All the good old days. This last weekend I few from SAT to LAX. Had to sit next to a screaming baby for most of the trip. I also got groped by TSA because I had a hip replacement last year.

  • cool... back then all item is are bulky......

  • where are the black people? did they exist in the US.......?

  • @less01 I saw two of them. The Skycap and reservation clerk.

  • @jvolstad lol interesting to know what our place in society was..

  • @less01 Those are bad jobs? I fly alot and I see the Skycaps getting some pretty good tips. I worked part time as a night hotel clerk when I was going through college. Nothing wrong with that job eather.

  • @less01 Yes there are black people in this era and I'll go ahead and tell you "bitches and Ho's" were NOT in their vocabulary either! I was a child during this era and I remember people being way more respectable and courteous than now-I mean a HUGE difference! People seemd to respect each other and had more pride and carried themselves better than they do now..so many people today do not seem to have respect for anyone including themselves..it makes u wonder how long we can continue this path!

  • @Dino0469 I totally agree... I believe that we live in a different kind of segregation ... wayyyy more subtle and introvert....... but segregation nonetheless you are totally right...

  • 12 06 SMOKE!

  • intersting 2 know how commercial airliners were 30 years be4 i wuz born [:

  • Nostalgic. I remember when flying was unforgettable. Tie was a must. Service was kind an planes did'nt look like Greyhound buses.

  • wonderful video of how it used to be to fly!

  • 12:35 ATCHOOOO!!!! Ah fck...

  • Comment removed

  • @RobertSchuster81 Listen again sir. The narrator said, "Every second of every day, an average of 4-5 planes are taking off or landing in United States"

  • @RobertSchuster81 every sec of the day he said

  • Love your videos!

  • wow. look how everyone is dressed. this was a better era for flight travel, in so many ways. horrible now. the "novelty" hadn't worn off yet. not...nearly. it was still a privilege, a 'Very special' event, when one flew. interesting though: this was still when Smoking was allowed on flights. lol!

  • @drumdude46 It is still a privilege.

  • @hotelpaw, valium is a downer lol Anyway, It is funny to see that couple checking the weather for Phoenix back then, there wasn't much going on there in those days, except decent weather...:-0

  • All those folks are dead but the plane still flys. way to go Boeing!!!!

  • @crissy214 nope, not all those folks would be dead by now but that air plane would by now, definitely be out of service.

  • @crissy214 Actually, many people from that time are still alive. My Grandmother was 40 in 1965 and is still alive.

  • Internet is way better

  • it very interesting.... I could say a whole lot about why things are better now, but also how many things are lost. For example people are not nearly as polite now, but we certainly have more equality as women now... holy balls. And flying looked a great deal more organic then as opposed to now.

  • it very interesting.... I could say a whole lot about why things are better now, but also how many things are lost. For example people are not nearly as polite now, but we certainly have more equality as women now... holy balls.

  • its very interesting.... where are the female pilots!!! And of course the dutiful house wife answers the phone.... while probably high on Valium from at least 3 different doctors.... Wow, things are so much better now!! Except the politeness factor...people are rude, fat and poorly dressed now.

  • its very interesting.... where are the female pilots!!! And of course the dutiful house wife answers the phone. Wow, things are so much better now!! Except the politeness factor...people are not so much with that now.

  • its very interesting.... where are the female pilots!!! And of course the dutiful house wife answers the phone. Wow, things are so much better now!! Except the politeness factor...people are not so much with that now.

  • the pilot didnt land on the center line he was WAY off!!

  • @MyPilot747 dats y runways r fat and wide

  • I started my flying lessons in 1965. Notice the dirty air. Smog. The were periods of ten days or more that I couldn't fly because of the reduced visability. They say the air is still dirty today. Look out the window. They lie. Look at how many airlines in this video, that no longer exist today. It was call deregulation. Horrors: Please put out your cigarettes for takeoff. Try finding a pay phone today. The airport terminals are like bus stations.

  • Really enjoyed that don't normally like old stuff like that but it was good would watch again

  • Love the tilt of the hat, a real gent.

  • i was an Air Hostess in the 60's we dressed well and our priority were our passengers and flight crew of course. We wore white gloves and greeted everyone personally and our uniforms were immaculate .

  • Yes it was the days of flying when it was really worth what you paid You had a good seat with space people were nice to each other most all the time The crews & ground personal were always nice and polite & it was a pleasure to fly They paid there employees a reasonable wage & were respected for what they did The ailines today are nothing but cattle haulers rude employees lousey pay no benefits Traverers dress like homeless or cheap trash Ceo's & the likes take all the money & benefits for them

  • 21:12 She had an iphone :)

When I was 10, I enjoyed waiting for my blind father a few hours at the airport watching the jet planes. Though my time was just 20 years ago, this video reflects almost the same feeling. The flights were much more memorable back then.

  • Amazing how little ATC has changed in 46 years! When piloting a plane you still have to talk over VHF radio to get your clearance, talk to the tower, approach and center controllers, and follow the exact same procedures shown in this movie. It's as if the Internet and wireless data communications were never invented.

  • Yep, that's the way airlines used to be. People were friendly, the airlines believed in SERVICE, the stewardesses were not fat, the pilots actually had some authority to do something, an airline job was prestigious and not a minimum wage job, and we didn't have to worry about terrorists and the TSA feeling up a 3 year old boy. Where is Mr. Peabody and the Wayback machine when we need him?

  • @mustangflyr Well, one thing that hasn't changed is the authority the Captain has. As long as he's assigned to that aircraft, it's still his ship, even before it leaves the gate. And there are even some attractive and pleasant stewardesses still to be had.

  • @LateNightCable Dear Up-Too-Late, I think you're comparing the changing role of your parents within your family with the role of the male pilot of the air plane. . Who would there be, who would take the place of the pilot, ever? A concierge, maître d', the President of the United States, were he to board? . Let me know if you can think of anything/one. . . Cheers. from, del-boy
  • @MealyMouthedLeach Dear doughboy, what you just said made absolutely no sense. Bye now.

  • @LateNightCable Dear up too late,

    Yes, read more books.

    .

    Cheers.

    from,

    del-boy

  • No terrorist threats, no cell phone jerks, everybody was pleasant to one another. The good old days.

  • @Michael55443 Only so, because hanging and the electric chair were keeping everyone on their toes.

  • the very first shot already pissed me off... they showed an undercarriage view of a takeoff, and in the cut-scene, they showed a wide view of the whole plane taking off but you can tell it's not even the same type of aircraft because of the difference in the landing gear bogie

  • If it looks like these were better times, it's because they were. Much better.

  • Wow. Seat belt extensions? Now they make you buy a second seat. Things really have changed for the worse.

Also, I didn't know that flights were allowed to ban smoking outright at that time.

  • Wow. Seat belt extensions? Now they make you buy a second seat. Things really have changed for the worse.

  • wow is that what freedom looks like? you mean everyone wasn't hyper paranoid, rude, and petrified of everything that moved? musta been nice...

  • for some reason, i never understood what AT&T standed for until now wow

  • Just fantastic, the technology then was almost scary.

  • did they have Auto Pilot back then?

  • @XXTHE12THMANXX Of course they did. It was 1965 not 1920.

  • WOW! THAT was what computers looked like back then?

  • Que lindo video, que epoca abra sido la de volar en la decada del 60, saludos

  • Nice, Wonderful Classic Of Plane Talk.

  • 707s , 727s , DC-8s all the classic jetliners great days back then .

    thanks for sharing

  • I miss flying the way it used to be.

    George Vreeland Hill

  • Miss the way it used to be

  • Everybody is dressed up for the filming, and nobody smoked.

  • telephones will never catch on

  • Doesn't the pilot need flight plan clearance prior to taxi? Teletype is the grandfather of the internet I assume...

  • @oooowwwwdddd ...

Think you have an advanced civilization today?

These people enjoyed hassle-free and worry-free boarding, courteous service and interaction before, during, after flights, didn't have to fly next to some jacknut with cruddy feet in flipflops and a UFC t-shirt, had more room even in smaller aircraft ... oh, and didn't worry about having to phone their contact list 24/7...how did they ever survive? All while we're like cattle as the TSA grope away. "Stone Age" my butt

  • @1981OSNY Thank you. You could,nt be more correct.

  • @1981OSNY You hit the nail on the head my friend.

  • @tiberius1701 Well, someone had to say it - just glad you liked it. Thanks and happy landings..

  • that was when the airline staff were friendly to you

  • Wow. Everything seemed so simply, and nice back then.

  • why don't the make films like these anymore?

  • it feels like i am watching a mad men's episode.

  • LMAO @ 9:25

  • downtown ticket offices are a thing of the past.

  • This is so awesome!

  • How times have changed. Crazy!

  • It's amazing to watch how people survived in the stone age.

  • "Ohhhh" dammit I still have to sit in all that f'ing traffic.

  • did he dial 4 numbers!

  • Gee, mom didn't compalin..."Oh crap, now I've to drive in all that traffic to the airport at 5:00PM"

  • That is sick! All those huge banks of main frames, dials and push buttons. It's like Star Wars... It's incredible how much things have advanced.

  • What a great video, way out of my time, but a great perspective. Crazy now with all the tech we have, and they did it with less, and still got the jobs done! Though it would be funny if I could go back in time, and sit down with my laptop in the passenger seats... wonder what they would say? :-)

  • @SylarDX85 Laptops would be allowed during take off and landing since they will not interfere with 1965 ATC frequencies!

  • @dpurdue Awesome! Anyone want to watch Seinfeld ?!

  • if only they new today :) GREAT VID

  • Notice how many airport procedures have changed since then, mostly do to muslims.

  • Great video - but the HVAC vent talking at 19:35 is a little scary!

  • loooks old...

  • I just want to time travel to the 60s and run into the cockpit and yell "I-Phone MOTHER FUCKER!!!"

  • Imagine me with my laptop, iPod, Cell phone & dressed up hip hop style - arriving at the airport driving my Ferrari..........to the mental hospital.

What a boring and gray era that was! All of them look & act like those puppets from Thunderbirds ar go series.

  • Goodness, how I remember those days! Yes, I'm that old, but those days of much simpler times (in comparison to today) seemed so much more pleasant....people WERE nicer...people WERE better mannered and well dressed. Social civilities were the norm. I know....I was a chief steward and flew for 37 years during this era. The '50's and '60's were certainly the golden age for travel and I do miss it.

  • This is almost bringing a tear to my eye. Thank you for all of the videos that you have posted. You've done a great service to human knowledge.

  • I don't use the word "quaint" very often at all, but that was... quaint.

  • lostAviators loves this video!

  • So many bankrupt airlines...

  • Wow - thanks for the "golden days of aviation" flashback!

  • "That was a wonderful meal" (20:50). Imagine that--getting served food on a plane!

  • Men in hats, Checker taxicabs and screetchy, smoky jets... This was livin'!

  • The only reason I would like to fly back then was just less hassle of security and such. Flying was probably a lot more enjoyable especially at the airport.

  • A phone call cost a dime. Obesity rates were low. Racism was standard operating procedure. But stewardi looked good!

  • everybody looks so happy and nice, wow, avaition in the golden days.

  • The golden days of aviation. People were also polite, courteous and well dressed.

  • @mja72

I don't know man, it is promo film from the "gold era'"... you know those notorious, shameless film reels where everyone smiles, and everything is just swell? I've talked to people who were employees with United and Eastern way back in 1961 till 1993. It's true, people acted better because they were treated better. But it's because they paid top dollar and there just wasn't as many people flying then as there are now. However it was in it's essence, almost the same as today.

  • @mja72 Your right. The liberal left discarded many of the things that made our society what it was. They replaced it with despair and mistrust.

  • mave.foorumi.eu

  • @mja72 hahahah a really big true!

  • @mja72 We call that conformity!

  • Ward Cleaver Leave it to Beaver takes an airline trip--bur seriously==this is a great aviation travel video from the classic era==707's--DC-8's-Convair 880's--727's--that was real airline flying--wish i was a pilot back then--

  • It certainly was "Leave it to Beaver" style video but quite accurate in the aviation department. I flew as a pilot from 1964 till 1995 and it was a very exciting and rewarding career. Reached compulsory retirement age of 60 (65 now) in 1995 and retired as a DC-10 Captain. I miss the flying but am glad that I'm retired and don't have to put up with all the problems associated with present day air travel.

  • Hey COOL at 00:59, that American 727-100 is taking off from Tucson KTUS. I think that's runway 11-R where I learned to fly and solo's off of.

  • WOW!!! Loved this film!!! More please!!

  • Great movie of how it all was done in the old days. I especially liked the parts of the dispatch office, as I was a dispatcher until a few years ago.

The Ford Trimotor at 17.40, N414H, is still airworthy today, I think?

  • It still has a current registration!

  • Wish I had been around back then. People were alot nicer. Not to mention, flying on real airplanes. Not the plastic new ones now.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm an airline dispatcher at United, and it's amazing to see that much of the technology is still the same as in this video. We still use ARINC to contact flights, we still send text messages to the cockpit, all of the ATC commands are the same, the planning process is the same, really very interesting. The technology behind the planning is new, we now flight plan to take advantage of modern wind data and save fuel. Also flights no longer need to issue position reports. Still well done.

  • This brings me back to the days(1990's) when my dad used to fly a Boeing 707, a true classic "muscle jet"!!!

  • Love the "modern air terminal". and the sticker computer system.

  • AWESOME

  • God, I LOVE these old aviation movies.

  • "That was a wonderful meal!"

    Sure was!! :)

  • WHOA..high speed tape computers hehe, Back vault Pay phones, 1st Gen internet. Boyd did you raid the FAA vaults or something? Its nice to go back in time and see how things use to be. Great video

  • Oh my, the halcyon days of yore. One thing that stood out right away is how travelers' attire has slob'd out somewhat over the last 40+ years.

I remember as a small kid in the late 60s, early 70s that folk used to be well-dressed for air travel (or any travel for that matter).

I love today's technology, but would prefer yesterday's culture and mannerisms.

  • Indeed. All technology does for us today is give us the excuse to be lazy and fat.

  • Yes, I agree somewhat, but technology by itself doesn't change mindsets, alter belief systems, or make one slothful. Rather, it's a rudderless mind consciously filling itself (and by extension the minds of its progeny) with more and more immorality of every kind from cinema, music, the "arts," etc. Sow to the cultural wind, reap the cultural whirlwind. We're now engulfed in that whirlwind.

  • Agreed: sometimes it's hard to tell if the dog's wagging the tail or vice-versa.

  • @mung0jerry Even as a kid in the 80s, I remember my mother making me dress nicely to fly.

  • WOW Great Video!!!

  • this was awesome!!!

  • I Phone d )))

  • "Good vintage airline footage and, because AT&T sponsored it, a lot of telephones"

I actually was wondering why it is like 70% phones and 30% planes :D

  • @dustz33 That's why the video is named "Plane Talk"..

  • Great video! It's amazing how technology has changed.

  • Basically only the Internet is new.

  • The internet has been around for over 30 years. Just like anything else it has come a long way from what it used to be in the begining.

  • Well yes but imagine that video+the internet and you are where we are today. Of course everything is a bit more modern but still basically the same. The 30s to the 60s were a great leap but besides the internet we haven`t seen much revolution rather only gradual evolution in the past 45 years.

  • Plus 45 years from now people will be looking back on this going remember when you had to wait for a youtube video to buffer? remember youtube?
