That GA8 kind of resembles the S12 switcher that was made by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. The other diesel resembles one of the later ALCO RS models.
On modern locomotives there is a button the engineer or the coductor have to press every 15 seconds if there is no movement of the controls. It is like a deadman switch. If the button is not pressed it puts the train into emergency and stops the train.
@PaperbatVGFAN67 Yes I know its a old locomotive most of the locomotives they use in Argentina are rebuilt locos that where used in the US and Canada back in the 1950's,60's and 70's. My point is this would not happen with a modern loco.
USA definition of a train is " An Engine , or more then one engine, coupled, with or without Cars, displaying Markers. Thats FRA rules, and Im a retired Conductor of 34 years.
locomotives in America must not have any fail safe systems on them if they can do that. in the UK you can't do such a thing, there is a peddle in the cab called the dead mans peddle for in example if the driver has a secure or hart attack and falls to the flaw his foot would come off the peddle and the brakes would immediately come off. but if that failed or say the drivers foot didn't come off...
then there is the AWS automatic warning system. there are track magnets between the track that makes a horn sound in the cab if the next signal is red and if the driver doesn't pres it in about 7 seconds the brakes come on
In New Zealand, the definition of a train is ''engine or engines coupled, with or without vehicles attached or self propelled rolling stock, duly authorized to run as a train''.
Where's the train at? All I saw was a runaway locomotive! Kept waiting to see a runaway train but there wasn't one. People need to go back to college if they don't know what a "train" is! Dumb reporter.
umm. that's a LOCOMOTIVE! not a TRAIN. a TRAIN is a series of CARS pulled by a LOCOMOTIVE which is what we see in this video. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT B4 YOU GO MAKE A NEWS STORY!!! morons
@TrackMaster555 The article was made by Reuters, an English news reporting company. In England, people refer to both single engines and consists as trains. @SammSammmm also adding to this we call our train drivers in the U.K. train drivers and not engineers as our engineers are the true meaning of the word as in engineering works as in repairs and up keep of the trains or loco not drivers, a driver is a driver.
@TrackMaster555 well if you go to a GCOR rule book a train by rule is a Locomotive or locomotives , coupled, with or without cars displaying markers. With the newer rules class lights aren't used anymore as markers..a headlight is a mrker..but since this one was placed into motion...and abandoned ..I guess you can classify it as you please...Thanks .. as info
30-70km/h... and they never thought to just send a couple of guys out on a dirtbike and have the pillion jump off onto the engine to hit the brakes? and someone else on a chase bike to catch some sweet footage?
@TahreyUK - Tell you what, the next time a locomotive runs away, you try that and get back to us and tell us how well you did - assuming you don't kill yourself trying.
@rhblakeman Of course there isn't. This is EMD's cheapest economy model of export locomotive they ever produced. It's a GA8. They used freight car trucks connected by oversized bicycle chain directly to the motor. Actual traction motors and actual Blombergs were deemed too expensive for this locomotive, so do you really think they would include something as frivolous as a safety feature?
Rueters need to get educated! A train is what makes up either passenger/freight vehicles behind a loco/engine. She should have reffered to this runaway as a 'loco' or 'engine' So much for factual reporting!!
@jamuz355 Every movie ever made is about a runaway train!Which is why I will never go see any Hollywood "Train" movies."Unstoppable"!Atomic Train"!Wreck Train"Destruction Train!!'Death Train!!"Blood Train"Give a rest!!
dont all locomotives have a dead man button (or whatever it is called)? if the button is not pressed every few minutes the train engages brakes to stop?
A train is a connected series of vehicles for rail transport that move along a track (permanent way) to transport freight or passengers from one place to another.
Propulsion for the train is provided by a separate locomotive, . historically (from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century) the steam locomotive was the dominant form of locomotive power.
The word 'train' comes from the Old French trahiner, itself from the Latin trahere 'pull, draw'
@DADRENO If you are a dispatcher and you are moving a light engine from station "A" to station "B" you are dispatching a "train". I have a daily movement of locomotives out of our facility to a yard approximately 20 miles away where we pick up the trailing tonnage. When that crew departs its origin with just locomotive(s) they have a train id and symbol.
