I like it, its one hell of a structure. True, it may not have been the most appropriate construction given Cote D'Ivoire's economy and population, but it now has claim to having the largest church in the world, larger than St. Peter's Basilica in Rome!
@redeemer61190 Most of the artisans and materials were contracted in Italy and France..Stained Glass and Marble. Not enough given Cote D'Ivoire's economy and population. Every video and picture is desolate and empty. Why no People?
How can you be proud of someone spending 300 million on a Cathedral when your country's dirt poor? He was the president, not a religious leader. All the great cathedrals of the world were built not only during times of surplus but were the economic engines of the towns built around them. With pilgrimages, markets and towns that flourished when a Cathedral was built, they paid for themselves. IC's monument to vanity, is a reminder of leaders gone amuck and people too blind to call it out.
God knows what he is doing when he inspires for something like this to be built.
i dont understand the fuss about what Mr. Boigny should do with his own money. he built a magnificent Cathedral that will stand the test of time and touch lives in ways one will never know. so he spent 300 of his own money and enriched the country with this work or art for all to share. what about the person that spent 150 million, half the cost, for a painting so that it sits in storage?? enough said.
It is sad that such a beautiful church should be the object of misguided criticism. The purpose of this church is to allow people to worship God together. It was criticised in Europe perhaps because it is dedicated to peace and the same critics have never objected to their countries selling Africa highpriced weapons of war. Luckily most Africans are religious enough to appreciate this marvel and still have enough faith to try to lead to God the Europeans whose own churches are empty.
1000 dollars pro capita, practically a typical American earns about 50 times more.
It’s a scandal if a person could earn 300 million dollars in a country like this.
So please don’t be so gullible, there is nothing to be proud about, the people deserve much more than this, they wanted work and food and they got cathedral and Jesus !!!
Beautiful! Impressive! Truly one of the greatest structures of any time in history!
Houphouet Boigny built a house of worship that exceeds any other, but the most remarkable aspect of this event is that he shares it openly with the whole world. All have access, as Christ did for those who come to Him to bow down in worship! "Love is not a word, but a behavior"! How true for this man!
let me tell you that at the end of the world you won't see none of material or money but our soul and records from our act so this is just decoration so i'm no really impress cuz we build church or mosque but we don't do good thing we so fake and so selfish killing animals and burn million of forest ..... ok
Houphouet Boigny is probably the best African president so far, and he has not spent the county's money to build this but his own money. he did this for the Ivorians either Muslim or Christian please just simply believe this is your county's pride today. simply because it attracts people from every part of the world. it is a promotion for your country like Mobutu did when he spent fortune on Mohamed Ali - George foreman's fight in the seventies.
@mta415 i didn't say the US bought it....i said i would spend my money making this building than the statue of liberty, and u mentioned how the statue of liberty was a gift from france
You said you believe in free speech and democracy but do you really know the difference from democracy and a republic? In a democracy the majority mob rules. If 51% vote for something against the constitution or bill of rights then they can change it. A REPUBLIC is based on the constitution and the bill of rights and the minority is protected against the majority vote who wants to vote for something that would take away a right of all people. So in a democracy the catholics can vote you out.
This breathtaking masterpiece by Houphouet for Ivory Coast/Africa is NOT A WASTE or UNNECESSARY cause come to think of it this Basilica in Ivory Coast is the Vaticans (Roman Catholic Church) second home, no other like it in world, so it has a purpose and its purpose is not only religious but strategic. Lets face it the Pope and his crew are not forever going to remain in Europe so this Basilica will be needed when the one in Europe is in Jeopardy.
you're very original..the German pope is leaving to west Africa:) Maybe after all the Africans are extinct because of aids, famine and wars. Houphouet made the basilica with his own money as he was very well paid as president of CI.
Sorry to have bursted your bubble (Diordo74axi) by my previous comment. Just to let you know Africans don't have to be extinct from aids, famine and wars for the popecy to someday make Africa its home. For you I know as a NEANDERTHAL it is your dream to witness the extinction of Africans but we all know it's something that would NEVER and I repeat NEVER happen. So keep on dreaming if it helps you sleep. PEACE OUT!!!
Chill out, you could get constipated and start playing intelligent You got everything i said wrong, I do not want extinction of nobody, I am catholic but I have contradictory feelings about this church which for your info I have visited. Your comment was too silly and I couldn't resist to comment. By the way: is that true that there are more Muslims on CI than Catholics?I remember there was a big white mosque nearby.
I'm glad you took time out of your life to visit the church. But I still stand by my first comment so it's not silly. I've been there twice and It's beautiful to look at inside and out. To answer your question, yes in CI Muslims outnumber Catholics but the same can be said for the world too cause according to Vatican's 2008 yearbook stats: Muslims are more numerous than Catholics. FYI, the basilica in CI is something most Ivorians take pride in regardless of their religious denomination.
This represents the best and the worst of Africa in one video clip. Imagine how many hospitals could have been built instead of this monument which only has a few visitors each day (yes, I've been there)
the basilica was funded by the vatican, and spain, oh and not to mention the order of the Pallottines, but you are right in saying that such a large church may have not been nessisary. but I must admit it is quite the beautiful and impressive building.
the basilica is steps forward.... We started to build the grand Abidjan...We don't care about your stupid critics...Check out on youtube: Le grand abidjan project...
Can somebody explain to me, how can it be the biggest church in the world, or the tallest. The interior looks rather small, much smaller than many other churches. It only has a big square in front of it, but that is not part of the church. And how can it be the highest when it is only 158 meters high, four meters shorter than the Ulmer Münster, not to mention the Sagrada Família.
the problem is that 300millions$ in 1985 worths more and more now...if you hear the price for the basilica of roma when it had been built you will notice that your t-shirt is more expensive...and plus,
the way Africa is so not taken seriously, guess a little bit how great the basilica is suppose to be for being the greatest church in the world
plus it does not mean COTE D'IVOIRE has only 300 millions $...houphouet boigny was if you don't know unofficially (and officially in 1981) the richest BLACK person on earth...he died with an official fortune of 13 billions of dollars...don't even think about what he did not declare.....
so his family can buy as many typhoon to decorate their garden
Africa is not rich that's true
it is stolen money we are not pround of that
but talking about(the whole country)affording only one typhoon....man...
With respect to the Basilica itself, I can think of many ways the money would have been better spent in Africa...vanity over humanitarian need - I don't get it. With respect to your work on the video - AMAZING. By the way, would you mind sharing the name of the song used on your video? It is absolutely beautiful.
This is the tallest church in all of Christendom. Also, each of its 7,000 seats is individually air-conditioned, a system of extreme opulence. The basilica can fit a further 11,000 standing worshippers inside and as many as 300,000 pilgrims outside in the 3-hectare plaza - an area slightly larger than St. Peter's in Rome. Yet there are only about one million Catholics in the entire country and no more than a few hundred attend Sunday mass! So, what's the point? This is a colossal waste of money.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the annual maintenance cost of this basilica is US $1.5 million. That could probably buy a lot of much needed medicine or school books.
Magnificent piece of human work, I saw it two months ago when I was there. I'm still confused and don't understand whats its use? Is Houphouet in heaven? Are the Ivorian people closer to God? I didn't see too many people inside and don't believe too many going to pray. When there we were 4-5 visitors plus some cleaning staff. Worth to spend so much money only for a big ego instead something more useful and human?
we are poor it's true...why you don't ask about the use of the basilica in roma
there is no ghetto there???
you see my friend let's stop crying one day...ok
the man who did that had a lot and a lot of money...not like the other african presidents or the so called richest men on earth...nooo
he had plennnnnnty of that..if he did not go to his tomb with all of that and build something that will never disappear as a gift for his country and GOD
hey guys your critics don't stand up, most of them are just nonsense. As an ivorian i am proud of what we have built and hope more to come... in term schools, hospitals etc there are plenty in ivory coat and even in time of war we are better off... so please shut it off a bit band of losers...
Magnificent but sad, sad, sad. If there is a God, what do u think he's more interested in,
feeding, clothing, educating, and healing his children in Cote D'Ivoire, which is surely needed or building costly and pointless basilicas. Is this structure to the glory of God or to the Glory of man? I think the latter.
What a fitting memorial for this man, if that what you think it is. It deserve it for he brought unprecedented peace and prosperity to a country that was cobbled up together thank to the white man. We all see and understand how unbelievably difficult such a feat was.
henridion28: You missed the whole point! The $300 million could have been better spent by building a smaller church tailored to the small size of the Catholic population. Then the rest of the money could have been spent on hospitals, schools, or libraries for the benefit of all the people. Those types of buildings also create employment and can make use of local cleaning products, etc. The pope was even disturbed by the reckless waste of critical funds on such opulence. Don't you get it?
when we have nothing...oooo we should have this and that...when you have a basilica...why a basilica and not a little church...when you have a church...why a church...and not an hospital(we can pray GOD at home??)
when we have an hospital
why an hospital we need medicines that the real problem..and blablabla
you have a big pharmacy now
why we need roads and bridges we have african medicines
and plus
please internet lies piss me off the pop never get DISTURBED
why the hell the pope would be disturbed by the reckless waste...AFRICAN PLAYING the smart always get from their imagination stupid things
I was in yamoussoukro when it has been donne I have been living there for 8 years
and know that this money was the money out of his pocket...the country at that time had several hospitals and schools for all the citizen and I have never heard we have an hospital problem in ivory coast nor lack of school yet may be doctors and teachers and 300mil can't buy it
henridion28: No matter how hard you try to spin it, the construction of this church was a collossal waste of money to all clear-thinking people. This church almost never comes close to being filled because there aren't enough Catholics in the whole country. That's what the pope was concerned about. Now you claim that Iveory Coast has enough hospitals, etc. Then why does Ivory Coast ask for foreign aid? And why is it so deep in debt? The truth is that this church is a "white elephant."
Like Henridion said, they are rich and poor people everywhere...the USA spents billions every year to kill people in Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan, but they dont do shit about those poor people who die building roads and bridges in the US soil..the USA just disapproved the Kioto Agreements (if u don't know what it is, u dont deserve to talk here) and decided to spend their money on useless wars.. I think that when one doesnt know about a topic, and gives a biased & subjective opinion,it's useless!!
essohwilliam: You wrote: "when one doesnt know about a topic, and gives a biased & subjective opinion,it's useless!!" WELL, THAT'S WHAT YOU JUST DID!. The US spent money to SAVE millions of people in Iraq and Afghanistan; the US FREED 50 MILLION PEOPLE (especially Muslim woman) in those countries. And the Kyoto treaty, which you don't even know how to spell, is useless because China and India (two of the largest countries in the world) are exempt from polluting the earth. You're a moron!
essohwilliam: you wrote "when one...gives a biased & subjective opinion,it's useless!! YOU IDIOT!! All OPINIONS are biased and subjective; that's why they're called OPINIONS rather than facts. You need to go back to the second grade, and this time don't sleep in class. You're an intellectual gelding!
there are still poor people in the united states and rich people in africa..life is like that but they still build edifices instead of building ghetto shelter for the homeless and people don't cry
the guy build the eight wonderful thing in the word for future generations
and some dare talk about WASTE
he had plenty of money and the country too has...now they just don't put it where it has to be put..houphouet did and this was a GIFT(no obligation)
henridion28: You keep missing the point. That church is NOT useful because it's much too large for the small number of Catholics in that country. Don't you know what a "white elephant" is? It's a big expensive boondoggle with very little utilitarian value. And just because other countries waste money doesn't mean your own country should waste money too. Now do you get it?
Shifta65, i dont really think that this Basilica was a very necessary and important thing to build BUT i still dont think that such a beautiful and great thing was that bad.. As henridion28 said, it's a gift and at this time, hospitals and schools weren't problems..
Besides, u talk about the debt of the country, but lemme tell u some..the USA has the greatest debt in the world, towards the UN, FMI and World Bank. But they aint pressured to pay it back bc they are the USA! they dont care..
I agree, Houphouet could have used the money to invest in the future of the young (IT training, schools, ect...), but he was better than many "dictators". It is also Ironic that his wife is in the bahamas, hardly seen in Babi. I miss Babi, and plan to install my self there eventually.
When imperials buildings were constructed in europe and asia, the conditions for common people were much harcher. I have visited the catheradrel in Côte d'Ivoire several times, it is a monument of african pride, financed by africa instead of burring the money in forieng banks or recieve big grands from rich arabian oilproducers to promote religion, this is a monument of african vision and will. I congratulate Côte d'Ivoire, because they have achived that visionand had that will.
I was told by locals when I was here that people fell from the rafters while the concrete was being poured and when they landed and died, they kept pouring and buried them in.
I also thought it was ridiculous how the Ivorian president was shown in the stained glass window along side the 12 apostles.
This building was a waste of the Ivorian's money and on the Baoules like it.
I dont think a church or any other religious edifice should be built by the government. What about all the muslims in Cote D'ivoire who had no choice yet ended up paying for it. Can you imagine if that money went into local infrastructure? Boigny wasn't nearly as bad as some others throughout Africa though.
Yes I wanted to stay neutral on this, but you are very correct ... the whole thing is ironic, doesn't sit well with me but Mr. Boigny was better than a lot of them.
Hi! I am doing a school project on Yamoussoukro, and our presentation has to be an hour long (!!!), but he said we could show videos. I was wondering if I could use yours on our section about the Basilica, since it was so very wonderful! I will credit. He gave permission to use youtube. Thank you!
And also, I REALLY liked the music. It was great. And those were such good pictures! You did a great job.
but don't you think it's a folly to build such a lavish building in such a poor country? Pope John Paul agreed to consecrate it on the condition that a hospital be built nearby.. I can't see no hospital in the images..
Yes indeed, thanks for speaking your mind, I agree with you, I liked President Houphouet for many things but I have to say that ironically this wasn't the best thing to do, that money could've been used for much greater achievements for the benefit of the Ivorians, Thanks again for daring to challenge this structure, long live freedom of speech and the hospital is there, it just doesn't look like a hospital, it's part of the church.

the problem is that 300millions$ in 1985 worths more and more now...if you hear the price for the basilica of roma when it had been built you will notice that your t-shirt is more expensive...and plus,
the way Africa is so not taken seriously, guess a little bit how great the basilica is suppose to be for being the greatest church in the world
DO YOU REALLY THINK IT IS BY COMPLAISANCE???
henridion28 3 years ago
plus it does not mean COTE D'IVOIRE has only 300 millions $...houphouet boigny was if you don't know unofficially (and officially in 1981) the richest BLACK person on earth...he died with an official fortune of 13 billions of dollars...don't even think about what he did not declare.....
so his family can buy as many typhoon to decorate their garden
Africa is not rich that's true
it is stolen money we are not pround of that
but talking about(the whole country)affording only one typhoon....man...
henridion28 3 years ago

This is a colossal waste of money.
shifta65 3 years ago
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the annual maintenance cost of this basilica is US $1.5 million. That could probably buy a lot of much needed medicine or school books.
shifta65 3 years ago
that why it has been a gift to the vatican...they take good care of their gift
we do not even put one dime in it
it creates employment...and the products used to clean and maintain it are locals
so do you see a little THE POINT coming????
henridion28 3 years ago
Nice church ! Really Beautiful !
But I am wondering why ?
They should have built something more useful like somne research center ? university ? more money to the people who need it especially in Africa !
JulienDub21 3 years ago
Magnificent piece of human work, I saw it two months ago when I was there. I'm still confused and don't understand whats its use? Is Houphouet in heaven? Are the Ivorian people closer to God? I didn't see too many people inside and don't believe too many going to pray. When there we were 4-5 visitors plus some cleaning staff. Worth to spend so much money only for a big ego instead something more useful and human?

happy whom place GOD before his ownself
we are poor it's true...why you don't ask about the use of the basilica in roma
there is no ghetto there???
you see my friend let's stop crying one day...ok
the man who did that had a lot and a lot of money...not like the other african presidents or the so called richest men on earth...nooo
he had plennnnnnty of that..if he did not go to his tomb with all of that and build something that will never disappear as a gift for his country and GOD
WHY CRY???
henridion28 3 years ago
hey guys your critics don't stand up, most of them are just nonsense.

Clichyabarbes22 3 years ago
What a fitting memorial for this man, if that what you think it is. It deserve it for he brought unprecedented peace and prosperity to a country that was cobbled up together thank to the white man. We all see and understand how unbelievably difficult such a feat was.

GOD himself ask david to build a house for him, then salomon to do it later...
so ask your question where it belongs to be asked...not here
if you really not happy with that
tell your president to sell all the houses in your country and buy foods instead
when the food will finish and you will be hungry you will see the importance of an house...and a house that can stay for very very long time
like the one MY COUNTRY has
henridion28 3 years ago
henridion28: You missed the whole point! Don't you get it?
shifta65 3 years ago
that's the biggest african problem
when we have nothing...oooo we should have this and that...when you have a basilica...why a basilica and not a little church...when you have a church...why a church...and not an hospital(we can pray GOD at home??)
when we have an hospital
why an hospital we need medicines that the real problem..and blablabla
you have a big pharmacy now
why we need roads and bridges we have african medicines
and plus
please internet lies piss me off the pop never get DISTURBED
henridion28 3 years ago
why the hell the pope would be disturbed by the reckless waste...AFRICAN PLAYING the smart always get from their imagination stupid things
I was in yamoussoukro when it has been donne I have been living there for 8 years
and know that this money was the money out of his pocket...the country at that time had several hospitals and schools for all the citizen and I have never heard we have an hospital problem in ivory coast nor lack of school yet may be doctors and teachers and 300mil can't buy it
henridion28 3 years ago
henridion28: No matter how hard you try to spin it, the construction of this church was a collossal waste of money to all clear-thinking people.

I think that when one doesnt know about a topic, and gives a biased & subjective opinion,it's useless!!
essohwilliam 2 years ago
essohwilliam: You wrote: "when one doesnt know about a topic, and gives a biased & subjective opinion,it's useless!!" WELL, THAT'S WHAT YOU JUST DID!. You're a moron!
shifta65 2 years ago
essohwilliam: you wrote "when one...gives a biased & subjective opinion,it's useless!! YOU IDIOT!! All OPINIONS are biased and subjective; that's why they're called OPINIONS rather than facts. You need to go back to the second grade, and this time don't sleep in class. You're an intellectual gelding!

WHEN ARE WE GONA STOP CRYING and appretiate???
there are still poor people in the united states and rich people in africa..life is like that but they still build edifices instead of building ghetto shelter for the homeless and people don't cry
the guy build the eight wonderful thing in the word for future generations
and some dare talk about WASTE
he had plenty of money and the country too has...now they just don't put it where it has to be put..houphouet did and this was a GIFT(no obligation)
henridion28 3 years ago
henridion28: You keep missing the point.

Boigny wasn't nearly as bad as some others throughout Africa though.
tomjohnoman 4 years ago
Yes I wanted to stay neutral on this, but you are very correct ... the whole thing is ironic, doesn't sit well with me but Mr. Boigny was better than a lot of them.

Hi! I am doing a school project on Yamoussoukro, and our presentation has to be an hour long (!!!), but he said we could show videos. I was wondering if I could use yours on our section about the Basilica, since it was so very wonderful! I will credit. He gave permission to use youtube. Thank you!
And also, I REALLY liked the music. It was great. And those were such good pictures! You did a great job.

Yes of course please do use it, and share it with anyone who wants to do the same.

Beautiful images and nice relaxing music..
but don't you think it's a folly to build such a lavish building in such a poor country? Pope John Paul agreed to consecrate it on the condition that a hospital be built nearby.. I can't see no hospital in the images..
omarebo 4 years ago
Yes indeed, thanks for speaking your mind, I agree with you, I liked President Houphouet for many things but I have to say that ironically this wasn't the best thing to do, that money could've been used for much greater achievements for the benefit of the Ivorians, Thanks again for daring to challenge this structure, long live freedom of speech and the hospital is there, it just doesn't look like a hospital, it's part of the church.
musclemn 4 years ago
The "hospital" consists of a single brick in a nearby field laid by the late Pope - the hospital has never been constructed.
