As a brand new keyboard student I can see that you make this LOOK so easy. It sounds very sparse and simple, yet it boggles my mind to be able to perfectly keep time with the left hand and play those quick notes with the right hand. ;-D I would feel I had mastered the piano enough for my own satisfaction, if I could just play this one song the way you play it! Can you recommend a relatively easier song for a beginner to learn that sounds almost as cool as this one?
As with the simplest of things: beautiful rendition! What kind of piano sound/sample library are you using in this video? I find it very appropriate for the tune. Thanks!
I always think that Bill Evans with his classical background may have been thinking of Chopin's Berceuse when he devised this, but a sort of toned down rearranged jazz version moved from D flat to Cmajor! Still very lovely in both genres!
I absolutely love this piece, and your lesson was so helpful. Love your ideas, man. I myself am a budding jazz pianist, and I'll take all the help I can find. Thank you again!
[scuse my english, I'm french]. In fact, It was first an intro for Bernstein's tune "Some other time". I didn't if it's a Evans or a Keepnews choice to record a 6 minutes improvisation on these 2 chords, but the result was great. Classical pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet says that some parts of the improvisation recalls to him Messiaen's "catalogue d'oiseau". When I play this tune on piano, I play "note for note" Evans imporvisation (transcription is easy to find)... It's so perfect.
such a beautiful thing to share... I believe Bill Evans last words were "truth and beauty.. thats all that matters"..or words to that effect....your playing does the notion credit. Thank you so much.
i like the mystery feet at 02:22! i'm a guitarist not pianist but loved this nonetheless. i would learn piano from you! You have the abiity i sometimes think is the most elusive in music:to make beautiful touching music from the simplest of ideas..and you also have Bill Evans wonderful reticence of touch..
Thank you so much. I also play jazz piano (and love bill evans voicings), but I can never figure out how he makes those voicings. And im very bad at reading sheet-music, so youre explanations on screen (with the notes of the voicings) was worth gold to me. Not to sound greedy, but please give us some more bill evans voicings. Thank you.
I may be wrong but i know bill listened to debussy and impressionist composer's resently at my school one of our pianist played Reflets dans l'eau by debussy and i was shock when i heard the intro that reminded me of flamenco sketches which i heard bill composed.Later on i heard this piece and it became apparent that bill did compose flamenco sketches i think in vain of that piece by claude debussy thats my opinions though! Cheers!
Flamenco Sketches was on the album of Miles Davis "Kind of Blue", I think it's track number 5. It was co-written by Miles Davis and Bill Evans. There is no written melody, as Miles Davis is improvising using various modes. I suppose some people consider Davis to get the credit for the song form, but Evans is credited with the opening 4-bad vamp.

The tempo is rushed twice at the beginning...but a good rendition.
I think I like Satie more, and on an acoustic—though I'm no purist. Jam Hammer fan myself.
Whoever thought this was like Chopin is dreaming.
But I can see it as an influence on Miles...and maybe McLaughlin and Abercrobmie's Timeless too.

Actually, I think Bill Evans said Peace Piece (and its predecessor, Flamenco Sketches) was based on Chopin's Berceuse.

Might have, I don't really know what he said or much about Chopin, yet. I'll have a listen to it right now actually.
