I find some of the West cork customs about bees so interesting. Like telling the bees all the news. Marriages,deaths etc. Also so many people live with a hive in the house, porch, ceiling and would never dream of disturbing them, to the extent of postponing building work. A way to catch a swarm is to spread a white sheet on the ground. I've seen very few bees this year in my garden, I hope all is well.
We had a swarm last year and I helped catch it, very interesting experience, I would attempt it on my own another time. The bees were so tranquil, the swarm was on the branch of an crab apple tree. You could have touched them with your hand they weren't remotely agressive.
How beautiful. Another year with a lack of bees. I've deliberately planted a bee garden and again no bees. The rain has been torrential for the last 2 days, like a mini monsoon.
is that a rooster at the end?!

What do you know about bumblebees? I find them asleep in my lavender.

I don't know so much about bumblebees, they tend to gather nectar/pollen from different flowers to the honey bees in my garden anyway.

I watched it a second time with my eyes shut and the sound is beautiful, warm and Summery.
I was pleased to look at it too!

Do you know the Whittier poem "Telling The Bees?" that it is necessary to tell the bees of death or they will fly away.
Just the same as a month before,--
Before them, under the garden wall,
Forward and back,
Went drearily singing the chore-girl small,
Draping each hive with a shred of black.
Trembling, I listened: the summer sun
Had the chill of snow;
For I knew she was telling the bees of one
Gone on the journey we all must go!

Its not great is it? I've bred another queen hopefully this year but I can't get a dry day with no wind to check in the hive to see how she's doing.
