Try Open SUSE 11.1 it's very improved, it's very good on plug n play, if you have some older PC or laptop model it recognises everything. I have it installed on an Asus deluxe with a P4 at 3 GHz, 3 Gb of memory it just recognised every device and connected to the net immediately (via ethernet port). It's very fast in this machine. You can have many browser windows open, the connections are fast because the TCP-IP stack in Linux is better. It's not as fast at full screen flash videos (You Tube)
I personally prefer Gentoo. Excellent distro. I used to use OpenSUSE but I had an issue when installing Python 2.6 and Python 3.11 in parallel. Gentoo's Portage allows a huge amount of flexibility, and I love the rolling releases.
....sounds like your computer is slow becuase of hardware I have Vista, and my laptop overheats alot but in Linux Mint 8 its barely even warming up... still in Vista things run fast. I have AMD Turion x2 processor, 4GB ram, 128MB shared NVIDIA.
Everything is fast for me in both Linux Mint and Vista... Opensuse is probably faster for u becuase it uses less resources and has lower requirments than Vista/Win7 does... Vista is a resource hog but with my system it runs fine and linux runs COOLER.
let the noobs dumbasses play around with their toys called windows seven and windows vista. The Linux boxes rocks, evar! so powerful, so light, so safe and so beautiful ;) what more u want?
If you're like me and have been involved with computers for the last 30+ years Linux will come naturally.
The people who have a difficult time understanding Windows won't be doing much better in Linux.
I believe that people have a difficult time making the switch because they're either dependant or familiar with their current applications. Many don't know there is a Linux equivalent available. Why spend $350 for MS Office when Open Office is free?
First you had plenty of programs running in memory on the Windows machine, I could see them on the taskbar...
Second Windows Vista caches memory so it can be used efficiently, it releases it when necessary & unused memory is wasted memory so you could say Suse with 1gb+ of memory is a waste.
i use linux - but this just simply a lie. Firefox on linux is resource hog - it works milion times worse than on Vista. It doesnt mother how much ram it showing to use.
Hey, How do you switch through multiple operating systems like that. I know you can use Things like parrallels or microsofts virtual machine software but how do you get the cube that you can rotate to choose which os.
LMAO, you're the idiot. Vista is a fucking resource hog no matter how you look at it. As far as resources are concerned, Linux will ALWAYS own that piec of shit OS called Vista. Even MicroShaft has given up on it (hence they're releasing Windows 7 ahead of schedule). Vista was one of the biggest OS flops ever.
I've had Vista since the launch day and love it. Its not just leaving RAM out there for programs to use, its utilizing it more to make your memory efficient. Besides, today you could build a 200-300 PC that could easily run Vista with NO problems.
How looks like the new death blue screen in windows 7??? and in Vista!!!??? I doesn´t work with this shits here! Tell-me please! The logo tell us all we need... A buble of shits.... The dll hell, and a registry of countless crashes!!!!
lmao, that's like saying obama's spending isn't debt. both are resources thrown out on the window. vista is fail and i really hope win 7 will be good. i really got bored of XP.
haha...when i had vista even if i didn't have any programs running it would still use about 1.5gb of RAM. just by running my antivirus and a networking program.Vista is just a resource hog, hopefully they change that in windows 7. i think they will, since its starting to look a lot like KDE 4.2 i.m.o. and with linux i only use about 300mb. huge difference.
its not and it still uses alot of ram when u dont start programs that need resources, but even on 64bit version when u do need the ram it frees up alot, got to a point where the os was using 350mb(with antivirus and messenger ofcourse) usualy uses more than 1gb

Exact same thing happened to me. I'm now a proud Linux user running OpenSuse 11 (Gnome). It's faster, more stable and there are TONS of free software programs available for just about anything you want to do. Fragging in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars on Linux is faster than the same version running on Windows. It's finally fit for the masses!
I love videos like this! My 4-year-old computer is at the very edge of Vista's requirements so even if it did install, it'd run like junk & have no eye candy -- yet in Kubuntu I can have Firefox 3, Kopete, GIMP, etc. running with Compiz-Fusion at full blast and not only is there no speed loss, it's faster than Firefox 3 alone was in WinXP. :-D
No, those 474 MiB in System Monitor means that 474MiB are used by the programs. But the RAM memory in the Linux systems is always full, by the programs, and the rest for cache and a bit more by the buffer.
In my installation of openSUSE 11 with KDE 4.1.1 and with 1.5 GiB RAM, 0.52 GiB are used by the application, 0.91 GiB by the cache, and 0.01 GiB by the buffer.
