Britain gave you more than civil service, it gave you railways, which in turn brought India together and made people think of themselves as Indians rather than tribes. We left peacefully, we didn't leave like the French or Portugese. We left with our heads held high.

Thank you for posting this. The English language newsreels give a very negatively biased impression of India during Independence. These images show how unique and beautiful the culture was. Too bad the English spent hundreds of years in India with their mouths open and their eyes and ears closed. Things could have been easier for the Indian people if the English had lived up to their principles.

as for the missionaries...they came when the british ruled india....if you are tallking of earlier ones then their practices were limited only to a few coastal areas in the country...it is a well known fact that the british encouraged western education:)

Neither things (Violence and non-violence) worked out as external matters (II world War) worked out which broke the british who then decided to leave the big countries and keep small countries as colonies. And let me correct a handful of my Indian friends here too. There was no such concept called India before the colonial powers came here. Hindoostan only comprised of north India and some of Pakistan until the Mughals were ruling.
The western seafaring assholes wanted to easen the name for the territory they imagined and called it India. Because they saw it as one India, it was easier for them to start controlling each kingdom which comprises the modern India/Pakistan.

While the average middle class struggled like anywhere else in the world, the elite traveled overseas and filled their pockets. The idea of colonialism is dead, not the intent. A colonial power only ruled another land for making its bag heavier and sucking the poor bastards off their own wealth. Looks like what is happening in the UK is reverse colonialism. Here, a small percentage of brainy foreigners are making all the money while the dumb brits are getting their 16 year olds pregnant to earn dole money. This money in turn reaches the pubs (many run by wealthy Indians) and encourages the phenomenon.
