if you take guitar lessons at all, they tell you that your supposed to cut your nails to the nub because they catch on the srings and are to much in the way. my advice would be to keep them short.

the way he teaches seems to be finger-style. So he needs the nails with the style of strumming. around 5:38 you can see y nails r handy. I don't have any nails either. I guess this is a good opportunity to stop a bad habit for me.

It's all about developing styles...get used to play with a pick, long nails or just finger tips, either way you have the same potential if you start from 0 on either one.

yes there is.. u can play much easier. but it's not important to have long fingernails when you play this song, at least that's I think..

It makes guitar playing easier, and the sound nicer, and a benefit is even if you cut a finger badly, you can still play nicely, without pain

so true. When I was learning Dust in the Wind I destroyed my ring finger on my right hand because I had never really done fingerpicking before. When I grew my fingers out it helped a lot.

They aren't necessary, but they give you control over the tone when you pluck strings. you don't want long nails for the fret hand though
