I kind of thought it was a JFK reference in there somewhere, and maybe about an affair from the point of view of someone that was having an affair with Johnnys wife who was like a good friendthat was confronted by Johnny
@tenday2 That's one theory. But I don't think the song is "about John Kennedy", but it does reference him (sort of).
I see it more as a relationship that goes wrong. It is sung from the point-of-view of a wife who is confronted by her gun-wielding husband. If you look at the lyrics, it is uncertain if he actually kills her. "There's too many ways that you could kill someone....Like in a love affair, when the love has gone". Her death may only be a metaphor for the ending of the relationship.
Although I like "Age of Consent," "Ceremony," and "Lonesome Tonight" more overall than this song, I love the intro/bridge to this song i.e. 1:55-2:10
i wrote a short story about this song about a kid and a bb gun going up to the cottage the summer this song came out and new order play a concert at the cottage! no they don't that would be dumb.

oooh wait...i think this song is about george bush
@peross1 What's wrong with you, you fucking dickhead prick...?? .... i didn't made that up, i read it in a magazine and it was Bernard Sumner the band leader himself who said this song was about JFK in a methaphorical way , you imbecile....
I heard this on the radio @ 12 years ago, but all I remembered was the sad musical notes and the beautiful melody. I finally heard the 94 version of this song 6 years ago, but I never made the connection; just found this by luck. Thanks a lot; this version is much more poignant, even painful in a way.

My preferred version. Darker, sadder...

that little synth riff meandering in the background at 0:15-0:17 is the best bit, never understood why they took it out for the 94' version.

The original and best version. Arthur Baker remix is still class though.
pedrocks123 2 years ago 24
Got to agree with that. This version is soo much darker and intense than the 'popped up' versions.
Why did NO insist on 'prettying up' many of their best songs for commercial release?
