@Sichel2191: It actually is about training firemen in a sense. It builds an extreme sense of teamwork within a department and creates a tighter bond between the participants. While not directly teaching skills that the firemen can use to fight fires, it does teach them valuable teamwork and leadership that will help them in the field!
I watched more than a few drills (I remember when it used to be on Wide World of Sports), but living in Queens (yeah, I know - but JUST over the line), I've lost track of the drills - LOVE to take my kids to see a few

The title of this video has the word "drill" in it... but TRUE drilling involves practicing like its the real thing....these people go to fires in T-shirts, etc? Oh wait...the word "fire" isn't in the title...my bad.
Okay- I'm a lady -who grew up on LI and went to drill team races since I was little. I LOVED it. So cool! So exciting-wow! You guys ROCK. It's definitely tough-and a bit scary and that's why I like it!
I just finished my first season as a Port Washington Road Runner, and i'm also an aspiring film maker. two things i have to say about this video, 1) whoever made it did an outstanding job, and if there's more to this I would love to know how I could get my hands on it. 2) You completely captured the feeling of being on a racing team. I hope with more experience in film making under my belt I can make a documentary about racing, similar to this.
niceee, im with PPFD(Point Pleasant) not on the actual team but for explorer racing team, when i get my application next month, and hopefully get with PPFD which I know im certain of :) im gonna make sure i race
go Point Pleasant Pickers :), i'll hopefully be on the team once i get my application next month, been with the PPFD explorer program since i was 14, now im hoping to move up :)
ONLY in NY BABY!! i've been watching this since i was 4 years old. on long island drill team is a religion that has a generational following and a tradition of excelence. i love my fire department and my company but as soon as the snow goes away and right after memorial day i start thinking...drill team time baby. go to NY and see a tournamant and parade...you wont be going back to texas afterwards. ABC wild world of sports covered this back in the 70's and 80's

What the fuck is this shit. Last time I checked we don't pull up to a hydrant at 150 MPH. How is this any indication of who the best company is?
DTMRM8 2 years ago
why dont you not comment on something that you know nothing about.
Its based off of fire departments in NYC in the 1600's who raced to get "first water" at a fire.
This is not training firemen in any sense. It's just a well known sport in the volunteer fire department world.
So next time learn more about something before you comment on it like a douchebag. And try not to be so ignorant.

My company does firematics competitions too but the point is to show how well you can do real firefighting tactics. Not attempt suicide.
