The web browser on Kindle is as worse as it can get. Better ship that thing without it. I just can't understand the point of making a new browser, when Kindle runs Linux and there are plenty of lightweight web browsers that can fit wonderfully on this machine. If they want to do something on their own (special security enhancements, shortcuts using Kindle's buttons etc.), there is still the possibility to fork an already free and open source project and add all this.
@rbaleksandar Its an experimental feature, what do you expect. Ive used it extensively and its not that bad. Sure there are better options but the average user probably isnt going to mod their kindle for it when they can use a pc or tablet to browse the net.
@fatalcatler Even if it's experimental, it's wise to make it as complete as possible. It's the same as shipping a video game without textures, sounds etc. - just a plain engine, which is not usable by the gamer. And especially when it comes to internet-relevant applications, the more terrible the realization is, the worse security it has!
@rbaleksandar Its not the same as shipping a video game without textures. The kindle is a reading device, its primary function is to render documents, not webpages, and it performs that function quite well. Also, just because it doesn't have the full functionality of a browser like chrome or IE doesn't mean its less secure. Bottom line, its a bonus feature; if you don't like it, don't use it. Like I said, its not amazing, but its there for people who don't want to mess around with mods.
I am looking for a long time the Kindle DX, to offer a 13 year old child who loves reading, and is unfortunately unable to walk "paralyzed"! Can anyone help me please?
I love books to actually own but at the same time I love ereading! :D I have an iPad but I need something else for ereading because of the headaches I get! I want a big screen not the tiny normal kindle screen! Is this worth the money?
@noahmarkbitney Yes, i've had mine for 6 months and I've read more than i ever have. I use it for Pdf files as well, hook it up to the computer and transfer pdf.s or txt files or simmilar, and read it anywhere, like for instance I put a strategy guide for a ps3 game on it, and i have Intstruction manuals for electronic equipment on it so i can read instructions while learning to use stuff without worrying about ripping the paper and so on
Do you have to pay for books, how do you get the information onto the kindle? I want to get one for my girlfriend as she loves reading, but am not sure - how this works exactly?
@quintonflyn9000 It works same as Flash Drive, connect Kindle to Mac/Windows/Linux machine via USB cable, copy & paste your MOBI/PDF files to Kindle Drive. Unplug the cable and Kindle will already show you that there are new documents for you.
@Blederama You can read *any* PDF files. It does not do content reflow thing, so not all PDF might look nice or fit into the small screen size. This means that you would need do some more panning.
I have a kindle DX for a little over a year and the screen went black. I called the Anazon customer service but to no avail. The support person was not nice and did not offer anything constructive and suggested that I buy a new one.
I am VERY disappointed with the Kindle DX and their customer service. I strongly recommend you DONT BUY THE KINDLE
@ACG6306001 It's disappointing that your DX stopped working, and sad to hear that the Amazon Customer Service wasn't very nice, did you have the extended warranty? it looks like they are only warrantied for a year unless you purchase an extended warranty. That's no excuse for unfriendly customer service, but it does explain why they wouldn't replace your Kindle. There probably aren't many companies out there that will do much for you if the warranty is expired.
Question: When u order a ebook on this device, do u actually get the true book cover? I have the sony ereader and sometimes u get just the title and wierd symbols in the background instead of the real book cover?
ill stick to hardcover books i love to read to learn and to get away from gadgets my hardcover book will never need a battery change or will never require me to buy a new device each time the first device stops working and i dont have to worry about will the file format of the books still be around 20 years from now not knocking the product just for my useage hardcover books are better and a nice huge book shelf of books has character
no offence, but you're so old school. have you really read on the kindle? it might change your views. actually, the kindle is bringing back the reading culture in youngsters, which was hijacked by movies.
@alrhazes the kindle is good provided the books u read are on it i like to read a lot of islamic books from overseas from pakistan egypt and etc etc a lot of them are not in ebook format
so the kindle is fine if you read ny times best sellers fiction and stuff but none ofthe books i read or own are in the kindle store i buy books from here i buy books at fadakbooks, com and dont see any books they carry in any ebook store
@alrhazes so what does one do in that case if they arent reading the common stuff and are reading books in the arabic language from other countries and cant get ebooks of them maybe the stuff you read is in the kindle store the stuff i read isnt and its a problem most of my muslim friends at the mosque complain about most of the islamic books we want are not in the nook kindle or apples ibook store as far as i can tell the kindle and nook store only have english books
@bboycrew12 well maybe a muslim buisness man could then create a ebook store for muslim people..seriously is america have to create evrething.?in my contry (canada) we already give 5 15 minuts break a day to muslim so they can pray while our canadian ass have to work all day with only 2 15 minuts a day....we gave them space to pray.we even gave them social weelfare when they come with nothing but there clothe in the contry...give us a break....if they want muslim ebook they just have creat them!
Now all they need to do is allow you to take lecture notes on it and it would be worth buying for students. I can't believe they haven't added a word processor. I simply cannot believe it. Sort it out Amazon.
What's disappointing to me about the Kindle is that it isn't programmable. Amazon has kept their developer's program locked up tight. As a result of that and the lameness of the web browser, it's really just a single-purpose device -- hardly justifiable in during the Great Recession.
Yeah, that was kinda funny. "no fu...ing garlic".
And she kept that page zoomed in on the screen for over a whole minute ! LOL.
Nice device. But I'm pretty happy with my 1st gen KindleDX. IMHO, just not enough new features to justify an upgrade. Only things new are the graphite theme, and the improved contrast etc.
LOL this is the 3rd video about kindle that froze up during watching like umpteen times. Just goes to show me how easy it would be for the kindle to freeze up too.
Important questions: how do you put your own PDFs on Graphite? Do you still need that email juggling? Also, is it possible to change font size in a PDF?
@MrSquitwet And you call me creepy when your having a full on conversation with yourself with your other account @JerridPayne and I proved its yours so yeah your a massive loser with no friends...end of...
@JerridPayne Seriously? Nope I have never read a book in my life I mean what were all those paper things with black squiggly lines that ended up getting me an A??? I really am not sure...... and oh by the way you are really gullible if you actually believe I'm sending him messages to his inbox but what I presume is that he is receiving reply notifications which he can't distinguish between personal messages but that doesn't really surprise me....
I don't understand, why would I want to buy this when I can add an extra $100 and get an iPad that has color, play different kinds of media, has touch display, and can run thousands of apps including games?
This is for a small niche market, people who are rich and love to read a lot and everywhere, how many of those exist?
@mememe84 I don't know about the states but here in the UK they've just realesed the kindle and it's a quarter of the price of an iPad... £109 vs £429. So yeah, the iPad can do more but it's a helluva lot more expensive. Too expensive really.
@mesonofgib@mememe84 That's just the standard Kindle though the Kindle DX is what the iPad should really be compared to due to similar size, price etc so its more like £300 vs £429.
I'm thinking about getting one, but am a little disappointed about the lack of wifi, internal storage, and the face that there is no choice for expandable storage. Anyway with the free 3G coverage will I need to get another sim card with phone service to view wikipedia or magazine subscription? Would a prepaid sim work?
@MrSquitwet Yes I am fully aware it is a reader but YOU don't seem to be aware that it can play .mp3's and music in the background while you are reading eBooks like many other eReaders.
@CassettePlaya1 Why would you play music on... a Kindle? I mean, shit, wouldn't you rather prefer to play music on a DECENT set of speakers, like Pioneer?
@MrSquitwet ..Um because some people like to listen to music while they read like myself? And you can just use a decent pair of quality head/earphones like nearly everytime you listen to portable music. Plus where the hell are you going to get Pioneer speakers from when your reading your Kindle on the train, bus or in a park huh?
"Um because some people like to listen to music while they read like myself"
-
Hahaha, you act like you're in the majority. They left out decent mp3 play-back because you *are* a minority, dumbshit. Who the fuck listens to music when they read? Obviously some thick-headed fucking clown like yourself that probably still reads Goosebumps and Animorphs. Pull your head out of your ass and you god damn ham-fisted knuckle-dragging plebeian.
@CassettePlaya1 "Too right you removed it"... and you're calling ME a dumb ass? Hahaha, pot meet fucking kettle. Damn right I stand by what I said. You just insinuated that you would either A.) Use your Kindle as a car stereo B.) Use your Kindle as an audio output FOR a car stereo
-
Either way you're a fucking dumb nigger with fucked up teeth from the UK
@MrSquitwet Wow really? You are now resorting to name calling and racism? Ha you make me lol and it really does show me that you are some low IQ dumbass cretin who at some point in life failed significantly or was neglected or abused as a child. You asked a question and I gave you a logical answer but because your a little bitch you decided to start crying about it. The use of this is in case somebody wants to listen to an audiobook or use the text to speech while driving you dumb piece of shit.
@MrSquitwet Haha keep crying bitch boy because you know I'm right and your just a little bitch who doesn't like been in the wrong so you start crying like you are now. And audiobooks are for anyone and for anywhere...lets see its a bit hard when you want to read a book but are out and about say shopping. But with an audiobook it allows you to still do your day to day tasks while in this case listening to the book. So I take it you don't watch film adaptations as thats just a visual book fucktard
@CassettePlaya1 i was actually going to side with you right before you made yourself into a giant hypocrite. you call out that dude for resorting to name calling, but then you go ahead and do it yourself? what kind of sense does that make? also, what's with the "you were abused as a child"-- suppressed feelings much? I think mrsquitwet is pretty fucking stupid... but man, you take the cake. you are TRULY a moron.
@FotogLord44 You should see my inbox. The dude has been sending me all these fucking messages... it's fucking creepy. He's obviously angry because he has a cracker-jack mouth.
@CassettePlaya1 Wow, stop sending me gay incest porn of you and your dad fucking and sucking each other off. I'm not even going to bother clicking the link, dude. So... stop fucking sending it to me. P.S. why the fuck is your dad wearing a Napoleonic wig when he's fucking your fat twink asshole?
@MrSquitwet Aha joke guy but thats not me who sent you that but its most likely that you searched for "gay incest porn" all by yourself and for your personal pleasure..and really I wouldn't be surprised if JerridPayne was just an account you owned but whatever looks like you two were made for each other if it is another person...which I doubt..
@FotogLord44 Yeah but did I do it for no apparent reason? No! I decided to bring myself down to his level so he could understand and what's with the "analyse" of what I'm saying. I said that as he must have some repressed feelings he obviously wants to air out over the internet that I can only presume where caused by something in his life...sorry his existence.
This thing looks terrible! I feel horrible for anyone who has to use this thing. I mean anytime you do anything the screen blinks. I'm sitting here typing on my iPad thinking how on earth could I ever switch to using that instead. If the iPad LCD strains your eyes, then turn the brightness down. I love reading on my iPad. It is so much more enjoyable to read on. So much more realistic! Never buy a kindle.
@corvettesarebetter The comparing the iPad and the Kindle is like comparing apples and oranges. iPad is a multimedia device, while Kindle is an e-reader.... I READ novels on my Kindle, and I surf on my iPad. I do have the brightness on my 64 Gb 3G/WiFi iPad and my mid-2009 17 inch Macbook Pro with a matte sceen, on low, and yet, after a while, I still find myself squinting or with a migraine. My EYE DOCTOR says it's due to eye strain from computer use.
I thought I could travel with the iPad as an e-book, unfortunately for me, I found out that I could only read on it for a few minutes at a time since the LCD's backlight strained my eyes. It was practically useless in the resort I stayed in as well, since the glossy screen/glare made the screen unreadable as I tried to get some reading done by the beach. Battery was lousy, too. The iPad is one hell of a multi-media unit, but, unfortunately, an e-reader, it is not. So I got a KindleDX. Love it!
I am a frequent reader, and worried about page turn speed before I got my kindle 2, but once I actually started reading on it, it was perfectly fine. If that's all people are worried about, put your mind at ease.
BTW: regarding eink vs. lcd, the answer is eink all the way. You simply have to sit with one of these devices and actually read for awhile instead of just glancing at them in a store somewhere.
I love my kindle 2, its one of the best products of any kind that I've ever bought.
oh wow, this thing is slow. Look how long it takes it to change page or switch to landscape mode when you rotate it. The whole screen flashing deal when you change page is kind of annoying. It reminds me of handheld electronics from 1990s (yeah e-ink technology is new but couldn't they incorporate a faster processor in this thing?). I think it's a great unit, and does what it's supposed to do, but I'm looking for more improvements before I would invest in one.
@salehjoon I agree about the criticism of the slow page turning. 1 or 2 seconds seems like no big deal on the face of it. But when you really get into reading that can become highly annoying not to mention time consuming when all those seconds start adding up. Everything else looks pretty good and the reduced price definitely puts me very close to getting one. But the page turning is really holding me back.
@basslinet Good luck reading for more than 20min on that ipad LCD screen. Your eyes will bug out in pain while on the other hand you can read for hours on hours with zero eye strain with the kindle due to the superior Eink display. The ipad is useless for reading books or PDFs.
@soldersucker Have you actually tried using an iPad to read a book, better yet, have you actually tried a kindle? Because I just finished reading my first ebook on the iPad in under 3 hours (I read quite quickly), with ZERO eye strain, you should do some research before replying because the human eye actually strains from higher pixel brightness or from lower lighting.
The e-ink is only supposed to give you that book-like feel but you can't physically turn a page so whats the point ?
Does it flash on every page turn??

I don't understand, why would I want to buy this when I can add an extra $100 and get an iPad that has color, play different kinds of media, has touch display, and can run thousands of apps including games?
This is for a small niche market, people who are rich and love to read a lot and everywhere, how many of those exist?
mememe84 1 year ago
@mememe84 I don't know about the states but here in the UK they've just realesed the kindle and it's a quarter of the price of an iPad... £109 vs £429. So yeah, the iPad can do more but it's a helluva lot more expensive. Too expensive really.
mesonofgib 1 year ago
@mesonofgib @mememe84 That's just the standard Kindle though the Kindle DX is what the iPad should really be compared to due to similar size, price etc so its more like £300 vs £429.

I'm thinking about getting one, but am a little disappointed about the lack of wifi, internal storage, and the face that there is no choice for expandable storage. Anyway with the free 3G coverage will I need to get another sim card with phone service to view wikipedia or magazine subscription? Would a prepaid sim work?
itfeltsoreal 1 year ago
@itfeltsoreal
Expandable storage? Are you on effing drugs? You can store *3500* books. What are you trying to use this thing for? Movies?
MrSquitwet 1 year ago
@MrSquitwet But they may want to store a lot of music on it or image heavy/ large file pdfs.
CassettePlaya1 1 year ago
@CassettePlaya1 This is a READER, not a music player. LMFAO
MrSquitwet 1 year ago
@MrSquitwet Yes I am fully aware it is a reader but YOU don't seem to be aware that it can play .mp3's and music in the background while you are reading eBooks like many other eReaders.
CassettePlaya1 1 year ago
@CassettePlaya1 Why would you play music on... a Kindle? I mean, shit, wouldn't you rather prefer to play music on a DECENT set of speakers, like Pioneer?
MrSquitwet 1 year ago
@MrSquitwet ..Um because some people like to listen to music while they read like myself? And you can just use a decent pair of quality head/earphones like nearly everytime you listen to portable music. Plus where the hell are you going to get Pioneer speakers from when your reading your Kindle on the train, bus or in a park huh?
CassettePlaya1 1 year ago
@CassettePlaya1
MrSquitwet 1 year ago
@MrSquitwet And the answer to your question is that you can plug the Kindle into your home or car with an Aux jack.

MrSquitwet 1 year ago
@MrSquitwet Wow really? You are now resorting to name calling and racism? Ha you make me lol and it really does show me that you are some low IQ dumbass cretin who at some point in life failed significantly or was neglected or abused as a child. You asked a question and I gave you a logical answer but because your a little bitch you decided to start crying about it. The use of this is in case somebody wants to listen to an audiobook or use the text to speech while driving you dumb piece of shit.
CassettePlaya1 1 year ago
@CassettePlaya1

Audiobooks are for fucking blind people (clearly that's you, based on your reading comprehension skill), and retards that are too lazy (also you).
MrSquitwet 1 year ago
@MrSquitwet Haha keep crying bitch boy because you know I'm right and your just a little bitch who doesn't like been in the wrong so you start crying like you are now. And audiobooks are for anyone and for anywhere...lets see its a bit hard when you want to read a book but are out and about say shopping. But with an audiobook it allows you to still do your day to day tasks while in this case listening to the book. So I take it you don't watch film adaptations as thats just a visual book fucktard
CassettePlaya1 1 year ago
@CassettePlaya1 i was actually going to side with you right before you made yourself into a giant hypocrite. you call out that dude for resorting to name calling, but then you go ahead and do it yourself? what kind of sense does that make? also, what's with the "you were abused as a child"-- suppressed feelings much? I think mrsquitwet is pretty fucking stupid... but man, you take the cake. you are TRULY a moron.

MrSquitwet 1 year ago
@MrSquitwet Aha joke guy but thats not me who sent you that but its most likely that you searched for "gay incest porn" all by yourself and for your personal pleasure..and really I wouldn't be surprised if JerridPayne was just an account you owned but whatever looks like you two were made for each other if it is another person...which I doubt..
CassettePlaya1 1 year ago

Never buy a kindle.
corvettesarebetter 1 year ago
@corvettesarebetter The comparing the iPad and the Kindle is like comparing apples and oranges. iPad is a multimedia device, while Kindle is an e-reader.... I READ novels on my Kindle, and I surf on my iPad. I do have the brightness on my 64 Gb 3G/WiFi iPad and my mid-2009 17 inch Macbook Pro with a matte sceen, on low, and yet, after a while, I still find myself squinting or with a migraine. My EYE DOCTOR says it's due to eye strain from computer use.

@corvettesarebetter
You know what's more realistic? Reading a real fucking book you stupid ass sheep
MrSquitwet 1 year ago
I thought I could travel with the iPad as an e-book, unfortunately for me, I found out that I could only read on it for a few minutes at a time since the LCD's backlight strained my eyes. It was practically useless in the resort I stayed in as well, since the glossy screen/glare made the screen unreadable as I tried to get some reading done by the beach. Battery was lousy, too. The iPad is one hell of a multi-media unit, but, unfortunately, an e-reader, it is not. So I got a KindleDX. Love it!
rventura101699rv 1 year ago 2
I am a frequent reader, and worried about page turn speed before I got my kindle 2, but once I actually started reading on it, it was perfectly fine. If that's all people are worried about, put your mind at ease.
BTW: regarding eink vs. lcd, the answer is eink all the way. You simply have to sit with one of these devices and actually read for awhile instead of just glancing at them in a store somewhere.
I love my kindle 2, its one of the best products of any kind that I've ever bought.

I'd love to have e-ink display to prevent eye strain, but this thing looks like it's from 1995.
spamdude1 1 year ago
oh wow, this thing is slow. I think it's a great unit, and does what it's supposed to do, but I'm looking for more improvements before I would invest in one.
salehjoon 1 year ago
@salehjoon I agree about the criticism of the slow page turning. 1 or 2 seconds seems like no big deal on the face of it. But when you really get into reading that can become highly annoying not to mention time consuming when all those seconds start adding up. Everything else looks pretty good and the reduced price definitely puts me very close to getting one. But the page turning is really holding me back.

basslinet 1 year ago
@basslinet Good luck reading for more than 20min on that ipad LCD screen. Your eyes will bug out in pain while on the other hand you can read for hours on hours with zero eye strain with the kindle due to the superior Eink display. The ipad is useless for reading books or PDFs.
soldersucker 1 year ago 6
@soldersucker Have you actually tried using an iPad to read a book, better yet, have you actually tried a kindle? Because I just finished reading my first ebook on the iPad in under 3 hours (I read quite quickly), with ZERO eye strain, you should do some research before replying because the human eye actually strains from higher pixel brightness or from lower lighting.
The e-ink is only supposed to give you that book-like feel but you can't physically turn a page so whats the point ?

For some reason every time I think of this I think of old people.
