Thanks for the post. It's great to have this ready to play in the house when I want. I have the Will o' the Wisp CD so I have the tune in my truck. (And I have the LP from 1975, somewhere in my "stuff".) Thanks again. It's pure Leon............
@judecreek2...I agree...On a whim, I went back to the "Island" back in the 70's and found such serenity...Have never had it again...Gotta get back there! Take Care.
@meanmon ...I see by your site that you ARE a Leon fan!...As much as I enjoy "BTTI" I would have to say my favorite piece by Brother Leon is "Stranger In A Strange Land"...Whattcha Think?
Leon now the day is gone and I still sit alone and think of you for 30 years,,,You have beauitful hands, just watching you play the piano...I hope you get in the big arenas like the old days I am sure you will you have been since the Union alblum....Elton I like okay but you wrote most of these songs on the Union..A song for you is one you wrote I love and of course Tighrope,Massquerade,,,Best song writer that around,,You Hottttttttt thing young or old you still look good...
For some reason, and I really don't know why, I always have tears during this song's chrous - I think it's because the lyrics and melody are just so perfect. In any case, I do love this song.
"Love" If you have it you don't need anything else, and if you don't have it, it doesn't matter what else you have" Because life without love, there is no life.
Prayers to you, katherinejenns. I have loved Leon since I was a teenager (I'm 51 now), and I'm so thankful to find some of his songs here on Youtube. So glad your dad loved this song, too.
My dad just passed away yesterday, and he really liked this song and said he wanted this song played at his funeral. i love him so much and dont know what im gonna do without him, but this song his for him! LOVE YOU DAD <3
@katherinejenns I think I can speak for us Leon fans when I say how sorry we are for your devastating loss. There are no words to relieve your pain, and all I can do is say a prayer for both you and your dad. I won't insult you by saying it gets easier with time, or any other platitude. Keep the faith, Katherine.
@sandy91335: Leon never really went away. He's put out many CDs on his own label over the years and toured extensively--mostly small clubs. Although he's had a much smaller career since the '70s (much smaller than a great artist like him deserves) he's still been out there playing for his devoted fans. I saw him play at a small club a few years ago and he and his band put on a great show.
@aarfeld I agree completely. Since Leon's collaboration with Sir Elton, I've been reading a lot about his "comeback" and I think to myself, "How can he come back when he's never left?" Leon's music has been a part of my life since 1970, and it's about damn time the rest of the world caught up.
and this song was also just sent to some one I love.... she does not know it though... And I am not sure but i think Pheobe Snow did this music with him... and he was in Love with Her ???
Yes, I love this song too. It reminds me of somebody I lost years ago. I want to second that statement Mamaluvsmambo made also. Thank you Ropescan, for protecting everyone's right to be assholes, in this country. We couldn't run our mouths at night in bars and the like, without the people like you that fought to keep us free and have that right. I'm sure most of America is thankful too, although they treat Vietnam Vets like shit most of the time... Thank you from me...
@DorianMidnight I was only in the US of A once and I was in San Diego and I saw a dude at the the side of the road with a sign proclaiming him to be a Vietnam Vet asking for money and I'm guessing he was pretty destitute and, well, that's purty sad.
Growing up in Detroit, there wasn't any ocean, islands, or the sounds of the surf, but Leon brought them to life. Still in the Detroit area, and I can almost smell the sea when I listen to this!
Love this! Leon's new album The Union, with Elton John is great! And good to see a few clips of their concert (Speaking Clock Revue) in Boston now on youtube- belting out Hey Ahab...
we really need to flood the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME with emails, texts, snail mail WHATEVER and get LEON RUSSELL INDUCTED...preferably before he dies like so many.
I kind of love that Leon is not in the hall of fame. somehow....something so pure shouldnt be tainted by some panel of judges casting votes as to its worthiness among others & for the rest of us. Who cares. Seems to me the truth in everything great and real in this world always stands on its own, & over time proves to continue carrying on, touching new people with same spark that reminds us we're all a part of that greatness. Such a treasure needs not a plaque on a wall, in some building hall
@heatherhaas you know I quite agree with you. What insight. He is a treasure that surely can not be measured by anything tangible, because you know he is really the master of time and space and his soul.
Semper Fi Ropescan!, (G 2/3), had to go back to the island in '92, it had to end that way, hope you understand...Thanks ceeceerider,a fine tune from a legend in his own time. Peace.

Listening to this song in 1980 I made the decision to go back to the island - Guam - which I did in 1981 and stayed until 2006. the song is part of my soul.
tells about a part of my life that was very special to me..I wanted more than a freind but the man I was seeing couldn't give more due to his ex wife..I have moved on even though he is still on my mind and has a very special place in my heart..Thanks Leon for this song..
I love this song. Haven't heard it since forever, and just found it now. what a beautiful tune, never old, always good. Brings the memories back too....
I heard this song the first time in 1977 while riding in a car in high school driver's ed. The girl that was driving nearly wrecked while it was on...I was in he back seat and wanted to laugh so bad........
I was a young musician when I first heard this song on the jukebox during one of our breaks. It's been one of my all time favorites since that time. Never get tired of hearing it!
I sat alone on a stage my senior year, 1977, having just finished a lead performance in "The Admirable Crichton", and as the lights went down this song played. It was one of those rare magical moments in a teenager's life that stay with us all the way to the grave....
One of my favorites, I have loved Leon since I was fifteen and I am fifty one. He is just so amazing. This has so many memories attached to it, this song takes me right there. I love Leon's soulful, beautiful singing, playing and presence, he is the best, much better than just about anyone. I am going to do a portrait of him. I sure hope he gets into teh hall of fame before it is too late.
Leon not being in the rock and roll hall of fame, is really starting to piss me off, he should have his own room there. THIS MAN BELONGS IN THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME !!!!
Oh, how the memories flood my heart whenever I hear this georgous song! (And I play it quite often.) It takes me back to when my wife and I visited Maui, just before I was diagnosed with M.S. I can no longer do things hike in the rain forrest, take a bike ride down at dawn or scuba dive, but I have many pleasant memories. I still have my patient, loving wife (of 30 years), and I will forever have Leon Russell's music in my soul. God bless you, Leon. We love you more than words can say.
Fast adding most of this guys stuff to my favorites, never heard of him before followed a link from Willie Nelson But his something else, looks a bit like Roy Wood from Wizard, maybe sounds a bit like him as well roll on with some more many thanks
Its amazing how this song relates to loved ones for other people besides myself. My mother passed away and we played this at her funeral. Took me a while to realize this song was her way of saying goodbye to me and my brothers.
I was most recently asked, or reminded by Dancewith6 about these words. I don't know if we will ever dance to this, but we have related to it, and I pray it is not our demise.
I just lost my beloved brother, dead too soon after a life of chronic illness. He loved this song. We always promised each other one of us would own an island. Finally got my wish but he was too sick to visit before his death. Tell those you love how you feel. Our islands are created by who we're with, not where we are.
What a shock to my heart to see your post... Coincidence? Or, maybe we just needed to touch one another. You see, my brother got the word last Friday July 11th, 7:58am, that he has bone cancer in his spine. He wanted my husband to burn him a CD with all of his favorite "tunes". This song by Leon Russell was first on his list. Thank the good Lord we'll always have our memories. My sympathy is with you.
Just read your reply. God bless you and your family. I'm sure that the physical pain he will experience will pale in comparison to the pain of leaving a family that loves him. Remember to find some joy in today, we will never get it back. (I know it's not easy but it's worth it).
EVER is here ~6~ and has always held one pocket full of Quarters, and another filled with Beach sand. EVER wants another dance, and PINGS are part of the romance.
The highest tribute an artist can make to another is to record their music. Leon has written so many songs that have been performed by so many artists, including this one. What else can be said. He is one of the gifts I give to myself whenever I need to reflect on my life. This song reminds me so much of my life with my husband, who I met on an (his) island and the wistfulness of it tugs at my heart and makes me want to go back to those days. Thank God for Leon and his magic.
Leon had one of the first 40-track studio decks at the time. I'll bet you'll also appreciate how lush the vocals are on his "Wedding Album" with his then-wife Mary Russell.
Bought the ALBUM in Germany in the 70's, while on vacation...ahhhh the memories
Just watched your video and it made me buy a hammock and a bottle of wine and "watch the sun go down and listen to the sea roll in" ...THANKS for the memories!
Mr. Mad Dogs and Englishmen thank you for taking me back to the island one more time. Sitting on a beach on Maui and listening to this song with the love of my life. Its all been downhill since. Yikes!
i'll be thinking of you, and how it might have been

It brings me pings and pangs.. for Ever.

That Leon Russell has a way of putting a mood into someone, and the island one agrees with me for sure. ;)

Leon wrote some of the most beautiful love songs. He must live life fully to be able to express himself so well. Love you Leon.

Unbelievable song-how many tracs did they use for the background vocals which was a single female?Great production!!

Leon had one of the first 40-track studio decks at the time. I'll bet you'll also appreciate how lush the vocals are on his "Wedding Album" with his then-wife Mary Russell.

Makes you want to sit on the beach and have a few brewski's and such, which I did later in the Philippines, a nice life I must say.
