This is a kick ass song... no matter what band performed it. If Van Halen III was released by "another band", it would have been a hit, but "Van Halen fans" are a bunch of Uncle Ricos stuck in 1982...
VH 3 was cool. It sounded different that was all. Why do people expect people to sound the same forever? I liked the record. I would love to hear the unreleased Gary record.
gary cherone is gay as fuck ..... he ruined extremes hard rock reputation by being such a fag on stage ... nuno bettencourt is right next to eddie vanhalen as far as "guitar gods" ... love em both but gary ruined 3 years of vanhalens years too! .. they sucked with him .. i agree with Ed5150army on that i never got into it either!
There is nothing weird about the tuning, other than Ed's usual E flat tuning. Sometimes he tunes the B string to a down to an A.
He will again use a non-Floyd axe since his playing style is changing (allegedly he's been digging on a lot of Beatles) and he's not 22 any more. Some people grow up and so do their guitars. Besides, even by Ed's admission, Floyds screw up guitar tone for myriad reasons. I'm sure if locking tuners and GraphTec nuts were around in 1979 he'd never have used a Floyd.
Do you know what, its easy to slag this off, but never having listend to VH 3 and really not wanting GC to work, I have to say I love this song. Think the melody is beatiful and Eddie plays like a God, never playing the same refrain twice, Genius boys. Im off to order VH3 on Amazon. THANKS FOR POSTING!
@DROPD5150 I liked it a lot. But then again, I'm a Van Halen (Ed and Al) fan, not a Hagar or Roth fan. I don't care who sang on that record, it was the most daring and creative record they ever made. In fact, one of my favorite songs was "How Many Say I" which Eddie sang. Sort of reminds me of Tom Waits.
Gary is a great singer. In his upper range he is very close to Hagar. I think he went to the Freddie Mercury school of performing. They made some good music. I think the timing was bad for classic rock at that time. Unfortunately, since the album tanked, Gary was the scapegoat and he was canned.
Don't know about the singer... but i simply adore the harmony Eddie made for the song, i think it is some of the best work he did... yet so simple, (meaning no special effects, just fingers) it is insane how it changes from sad to happy to scary etc !
This would sound better with Nuno on backing vocals, guitar tone would have been better too.

never paid attention to this, it's probably one of Ed's best collaborations.

How does Ed get such a bright yet tight and snappy clean sound? Is that a compressor?
Kenman22 1 year ago
@Kenman22 : possibly.....my guess it may also have a Piezo pickup in the bridge (enhances acoustic tones in an electric guitar)

this is a cool song. BUT, I think the guitar part's business distracts from the flow.

The only thing that would stop me from buying that beautiful, amazing sounding, gorgeous, orgasm inspiring guitar is it's lack of the Floyd.
Also this song has a very strange tuning, which makes it sound easy but It's incredibly hard to play.
housemandoc23 2 years ago
What tuning is it? I was under the impression that it was standard.
evh5150316 2 years ago
It's all standard but the B string and high E string are tuned to A and D, so a full step down.
