my only fear of the kindle is that in the long run, less people will read, I mean, by the next generation or two, the reason is that there will probably be hardly any bookstores, and the allure of walking into one and browsing with physical products will be gone. It will be harder for people to realize that books exist if its only in a virtual world! They will have too much competition from other media! Also, because of the self publishing, it will take a longer time to figure out what is good

FUCK Amazon and the Kindle. Horrible customer service and a snake of a company. They sold me a Kindle that they didnt have in warehouse, and when they did get em it took over a week to send it out and they then sent it to the wrong address. They ripped off a lot of e-reader buyers this Holiday season judging by what the Amazon rep told me over the phone. So no Kindle for the wife. This Nook I got her looks amazing though. Sorry Amazon I will never be ordering from you again.

No actually, people are never just bookworms. Its just that people have other solutions for their artistic needs, etc, like their laptops. Kindle is a good enough reading device at a good enough cost to be appropriate to satisfy the book loving side of their personality. So No, kindle is not for bookworms okly.

For instance, as a graphic artist I could not only read a picture-less novel but also immerse myself in the "Life of Picasso" complete with paintings. Or a musician might study Beethoven and actually listen to it, while he reads. Kindle users would rather use "other" devices for those functions. I think I understand now. Thanks!

There's nothing wrong with Kindle OR iPhone users. Both can be ridiculed. My business partner has a Kindle, but feels it's time to embrace the future. I agree that the iPad is not designed for creating content, but i feel it ignites a new paradigm for casual viewing. Like "ART", perhaps it's main purpose is to simply inspire.

It would be absurd to criticize a device I never used? I was genuinely trying to understand it's strength and weaknesses. I became an illustrator because I like looking at the "big" picture from "all" points of views and distinguish the absurdities of life to get us to laugh at taking ourselves so seriously.

That being said, I "don't" see the iPad as a Kindle Killer any more than I see vegetables as meat killers. Everyone has different tastes. We're all in the same restaurant, with the same menu, ordering "different" meals. But ultimately we're all "out to lunch"! ; )

@overvision I began as an airbrush illustrator and made the transition to Photoshop, Flash and Illustrator as the trends changed. Again, that's the interest in the iPad. An illustrator unable to keep up with the times soon finds themselves behind the times. I'm also exhibiting fine art in galleries as well, and that's all about effective promotion. The iPad represents a breakthrough in art presentation and publishing catalogs. I feel it may be the future of art promotion.

Mainly the possibility of reading & publishing graphic material in an engaging format that invites interaction. I have a kindle DX for a little over a year and the screen went black. I called the Anazon customer service but to no avail. The support person was not nice and did not offer anything constructive and suggested that I buy a new one.
