I'm an INTJ and I work for one of the world's biggest retailers. I've managed to get myself into one of the quieter (though more physical) jobs the company offers. Funnily enough I am thought as less mentally able because of doing this job although I tend to walk around with a sound recorder singing songs which I work on when I get home as this is my real love. Currently writing a song about Asperger's syndrome funnily enough :P
I just got made redundant from a catering operation, everyday they just criticised me for falling short of the mark as they saw it. I tried my damndest every single day but as an undiagnosed aspie, there was no reason for them to think anything other than the fact that I was not good enough to be employed. It is soul destroying.
I have started a project about how people with Asperger's do things, I started 1 on cooking and have many more ideas but have a writing competition to do so videos may be slow in making, detailing the different things that people on the autistic spectrum find difficult etc.
OK, everything between 0:50 and 0:60 is bullshit, because it has been scientifically shown that people with any form of autism are much more likely to be sexually deviant... so yeah, I think there would be more than a few scandals involving animal fucking and eating crayons.
@FatherPatOphelia yeah except they wouldn't lie about having done it :P..... Plus can you quote the paper that published this fact and has it been peer reviewed and challenged and found to be true without reasonable doubt>????
I was a power plant operator in the Navy with AS. They called me the mad scientist because I knew my job better in 2 years than people whom worked in that field for 20 years. I used to get a ridiculous amount of vagina when I lived in Japan. Japanese culture is perfect for people with AS. Asians tend to be more honorably and truthful which made me feel like I belonged. Plus Japanese girls love nerdy/clumsy white guys with huge penises yeah!!!!
Good points. Aspie's need to focus on the core of our personality, that is where the strength is. However: if you expect a boss to suddenly see the light, that's often a waste of time. You need to produce a project or diploma to convince a boss you are worth the effort. And, maybe even more important: it can pay to hold a job that does not fit or barely fits for a while (say 6 months) as a step up to a longer term job. Make a plan and look for jobs that create that step up.
It is why, we need to scrutinize every elected official or candidate. These people are allowed to make so many promises that they keep very few. Money and attaining wealth will always be an accurate litmus test that proves the true nature and character of individuals.
The congress thing is a good one because we with AS don't posses the ability to lie, it's just not in our brains is what I have found in my research in trying to understand my condition.
thanks for the great vid, i was recently diagnosed with asperger's syndrome and am now being able to make since out of my entire life. Work has been killing me but now i have direction to find something better for me. Thank you for your positive words and encouragement! ^^
Thanks for posting this video, man. If I could reach across the screen, I would hug you. What you said here is so true, and the world would be a much better place if all our great potential could just be unleashed. I especially like what you said about those scumbags in Congress. The reason our nation is in so much trouble is that narcissists and egomaniacs are attracted to positions of power, and they don't give a second thought to anyone in the world except themselves.
that's exactly how i feel about employment. it's not that i don't want a job at all; it's just that employment in general only sees us as, analogously to social oysters. so what that we may be social oysters? it's frustrating that employers overlook what pearls we can really be, because of our personal talents. and i'm also an introverted person on the spectrum. the reason why i won't do anything when i hear, "get some production done," is because it sounds too abstract for me to understand
I have Aspergers. I am 55 now. Forget employment. Get a small home based business. Be your own boss. I owned a pest control company for 25 years, did debris removal, cut grass, did odd jobs. You don't have to get a job. Make one for yourself. Compete with all those who won't hire you.
When I finished with business, I taught myself how to be a computer programmer. Now I have a job making $90,000 a ye There is no excuse for unemployment. There is just too much work out there.
Is there a link between Asperger's, autism and introversion? Some people think that I have Autism a bit or maybe Asperger's, my parents never got it tested and I had to learn how to be normal but it's never seemed to work, all I know is that I'm very introverted more than any one else I know, but I also suffer from anxiety, the psych that I see doesn't think that I have Autism or Asperger's but I wonder if they say that to not give me a label but it's always been bugging me.
I AM TRAINED IN LOOKING AFTER THE YOUNG BUT IN THE UK WE ARE SEEN AS A BIT OF A RISK.HELPED OUT IN A SCHOOL FOR 2 YEARS TILL SOME PARENT DID NOT LIKE ME BEING THERE I WONT SAY WHAT HAPPENED JUST TAKE A GUESS ....JEFF...NOW I AM ON BENIFITS.
I am a music teacher but have had trouble keeping jobs (terms turning into permanent). It kinda sucks because I'm such a smart person but my social skills which are crucial to success are lacking.
@bombergal1 I have Asperger's as well. I have a Book Recommendation for you. It's called "Autism & PDD Adolescent Social Skills Lessons Interacting". You can buy this book on The Lingui Systems Website.
I really enjoy this video Nick. Im 17 years old and i dont want to sound conceded but im an Eagle Scout, have a good GPA and am willing to do any task that the employers want me to do. Ive been looking for work for nearly 2 years and i cant get a job. Yet i see the school stoners and slackers getting the jobs i apply for and i feel im more....qualified if you will. One day ill get a job i just cant loose hope i guess.
Excellent video! I have Asperger's and am doing a postgraduate course on Autism. At present I'm doing a dull admin job but hopefully that will change in a few years time.
Here in Scotland only 13% of adults on the spectrum are in full-time employment, which is disgraceful. At the moment there is a campaign for the Scottish Parliament to introduce an Autism Bill.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on employment for Aspies, Nick. You articulate the difficulties, yet in a spirit of hope and support for those on the spectrum. Kudos!
I just wanted to point out that you look exactly like my brother.
When it comes to employment, some bosses will compromise; others won't. I guess it's finding someone who will work with who we are.

Anyone who admits this along with seeing a mental health therapist or being treated with medicine are legally discriminated by potential employers.

The max hours i manage to work is 4hours, because of this i can't have a full time job. I get support money, so i got money but no job.
That seem cool but i would love to have something to get up to, i have been working before but my motivasion is -100%.
I don't feel like placing my self in pain for a louse reward and lots of pain.
So because of that mess i got two options, one get a full time job...no way....
option two...don't work...
Oh and i have never been fired :)
