This guy broke new ground for jazz guitar...yet he shows such respect for the classics like this one. Take Five is a freekin' jazz standard if there ever was one!
i like this beccause he is following his inner joy and taking the risk that he might screw up or get lost. most(if not all ) jazz guitarists seem to be playing it safe by using modal substitue chord theory to get their notes. this is more like a rock or bluess solo. also note (pun inteded0 the wry smile on the sax player when soloing is handed off to him, i believe he is thinking " ok so you;ve challenged me to be real and if that's the game you want to play , im in. Emotional "playoff hockey"
I like George, his fingers always seem to have a story to tell. A lot of jazz players I can't jive with because while they play incredibly intelligent complex things it comes off like a dictionary full of complex words. There's lots of big complicated words but they don't tell a story. George is a GREAT storyteller.
Sounds a little sloppy at times, but much better than his effort at "Take the A Train" which sounds plain retarded and absolutely sloppy. Who gives a shit how fast he's playing if it's not articulated well. Speed metal was a good example of when speed starts to sound retarded. At least it didn't go THAT far.
@noumbrella09 Not all speed metal sounds retarded, there are plenty of good three chord country songs, playing raw SRV style can be exciting, and not all jazz sounds like over complicated mumbo jumbo. I've heard good things and seen fantastic talent in ALL music styles, including hip hop, which I am NOT fond of in the slightest. Just because "I" don't LIKE it doesn't make it "retarded". Jazz fans claim they have higher intelligence, intelligent people have broad horizons and open minds...Right?
King George is one of my all-time guitar heroes!! Amazing performance in every respect. He is putting on a jazz guitar clinic there- with his incredible soloing, statement of the theme, and creative comping. I hope I can get to see him perform live one of these days.
This is amazing. I started listening to GB on the Cookbook Record. He's a fine singer, but the more he started singing, the less I enjoyed his music. His guitar playing was always the draw for me.
Words cannot describe the effort he makes to recreate this piece to make it his own. His improvisational skills are unnatural! So much feel! I love the saxophone playing too! A great rendition of a classic!
I play this tune at many of my gigs - been playing it since the late 60's. As much as I love it, it might be time to put it away. Long live King George!
@zomg0d I was joking...BUT better or worse is a matter of taste. I really don't like neither the looks or the sound of this guitar. The only reason i'm here is because a friend posted this on his FB and i accidentally clikced on it...and god damn it people should stop playing Take Five...is the jazz equivalent of Sweet Child of Mine or Back in Black. EVERYBODY plays it.
@thehornypuppy That's where you wrong son, playing the take five is not about the first few notes, this video is all about improvisation, which makes it different to Sweet child of mine and stairway to heaven and... not every body can play what KING GEORGE played here.
@thehornypuppy Pure sound, no distortion that can easily mask a mistake. Notice how one rock guitarist, Ken of L'Arc~en~Ciel changed his guitar to something like Benson's guitar for his jazz solo in Hurry Xmas? The sound is everything! Besides, Jazzers can play riffs rockers can't.
@thehornypuppy Stuck up? You must be the one who's stuck up if you are the one doing what you are accusing us of. And yes, the guitar without distortion is a pure sound. I've played with distortion before. It is true that Take Five tends to be played by everyone. But I stick to the pure sound of jazz. If you want to resort to name calling, fine. I just won't stoop to your level or resort to using the words you use. I made my point, and I'll stick by it.
@thehornypuppy But honestly, I like the fact that you admire Ken of Laruku. I believe (I could be wrong) he is very underrated. When I saw him easily switch from rock to jazz (and we're not talking about progressive or fusion jazz but the older form of jazz, which had my eyes bugging out when I saw the guitar and heard the solo) and smoothly transition back to Laruku's usual sound, he went to the top of the list of best J-rock guitarists for me. I just wish my dad could have heard Hurry Xmas
@thehornypuppy Blast this character limit! I was going to say that if my dad happened to still be alive and I let him listen to Hurry Xmas, he would have loved it! (Every time he listens to a progressive jazz group, when he requests a song, he asks for more old time jazz)
@ctg21361 Though! I do appreciate the fact that you know of L'Arc en Ciel...i love all music. And certainly like this one...i do also stick to the fact that this would be the equivalent to Sweet Child of Mind of Jazz...EVERYONE plays it. And there is no such thing as a better sound or pure sound. NO SUCH THING...maybe an instrument build better. Better materials and even in constructions there are many techniques that change very specific attributes of the instrument.
@Tallsmilingtree I agree there isn't a a guitar player on the face of gods earth dead or alive who who could play that much shit as George just played. Absolutely no one will ever be able to touch him. The greatest guitar player to ever pick up the instrument.
@CHC4669 Well some would argue Wes Montgomery (who was Benson's inspiration) was the greatest, however some say Birelli Lagrene is the best there has ever been and ever will be. Either way he is an awesome guitarist...just wonderful.
@hornetgags Well I've never heard of Birelli Lagrene so it would be hard for me to comment other than. He's probably not a Jazz Guitarist cause I probably would know of him. Having said that who in this context of music that Benson is playiing within I can say who ever he is he ain't playing no shit like this with Bensons "Feel Creativity & Expression" not to mention technical prowness. So many consider technique as the end all. There are a lot of technical players who don't say shit in the
