That snare is mean. And the guy below me munches on inappropriate things for free, everybody is blinded by shiny lights, who cares if us feeble earthlings like it?
That was a boring solo. Neither Tony Royster nor Joey Jordison and LEAST of all Travis Barker are that great. Try Keith Carlock, NIcholas Glassen, and Thomas Haake.
@3keith4moonsmash dude its a crowd pleaser solo, every drummer does at least one of those. Give him a break, hes got more groove than he lets on in this solo.
@3keith4moonsmash Every true musician knows that simplicity is the root to every solo. You dont have to be shit fast to impress. Only numb minded individuals are bored by the every day 8th note. Without a route, you have no solo. Classic examples of boredom are all over this solo. The crowd were at there most highest when he blinded the 200bpm mark, cos thats what they wanted to see. And ill agree with you. Carlock, Glassen and Haake are top players (Y)
3:05 to 3:25 is a mix of speed and power that even the best have problems with. Guys with incredible hand speed usually have to sacrifice some power or shorten their bursts. Not Tony, He's an animal. His strokes are incredible. He's gone on like this for minutes at a time in longer solos. One look at his physique and you realize this is one serious drumming machine. Tony's not human, who cares about Joey, Travis, etc. It gets old.
@Charlestonthedrummer ...i know this is going to start some inmature...nah fuck it...theres a world outside slipknot u closed minded retard..can u pull ofF either joey"s or tony licks..then how do u know he can drum 10 times faster. are u playing clinics, sponsored by any drum companies?u a drum corp music major?...just a simple random asshole thinking he knows everything about the playing habits of every working professional drummer..go get kidnap FUCKFACE.
@KurdtKobain09 His drumming has matured; he knows that a good drumming comes from a good build-up instead of constant BEAT-THE-SHIT-OUT-OF-IT
A solo is a solo because one has the opportunity to show everything he/she has got, but the ability to communicate and bring in the crowd is also just as important.
Imaginative, faster than many, neat, clean, precise...Tony Royster was a prodigal freak right out of the box. Watch the solo he did when he was about 12 behind a red Pearl kit, considering his age, it was nothing less than amazing! He was creating patterns that 30 year drummers couldn't match! Having Tony Williams as teacher was a big plus, but the talent was there from the start.
@crisfxxx travis is kid stuff. like playing souljah boy is the best drumming technique in the world. hahaha! tony would drop pro drummers' jaws on the ground.i just dropped mine.
@firstflaw1 travis is kid stuff. like playing souljah boy is the best drumming technique in the world. hahaha! tony would drop pro drummers' jaws on the ground.i just dropped mine.
hey guys stop comparing and fighting over these two artists.
come to think of it you guys are nagging each others but these two drummers are dont even fight...they dont compete against each other they just do what they love--drumming.
@ambrosiothethird well said...i sit back and watch people fight over who's best at this or that, and the people they are fighting over are probably cool as hell with each other
No I believe this is false, and trust me I'd be the last one to say travis barker is the best in the world. What he does is different then most people and he does it with style. He has never tried to be the "best" (if thats even possible). He is similar to ?uestlove in that he fits into his music perfectly and plays it with great style. Its not the notes you play but how you play them usually. Yes I'm aware that travis is not one of the top 5 musicians in the world, but hes good
Tony Royster Jr. is on an entirely different level. While they are pretty good drummers, Joey Jordison and Travis Barker don't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Tony. They can't even be compared. He's just that much better.
Also why do joey and travis pop up on every drum video. They are popular because they play popular music. Royster and hundreds of other drummers have more skill and its that simple. Joey and Travis are both in huge bands and thats how they got known. Royster and some other drummers are famous because the made a name for themselves through drumming and drumming alone. Tony would and could out play either of them in a heart beat.
It's interesting. I've seen Tony play countless solos here. I'm always mesmerized by his technical ability and physical prowess behind the set. He simply does things that are inhuman. Some of his solos are played so fast with so many strokes that they're just not musical. This is a fun solo. Great triplets and fill-ins, accented with the DB. A taste of his blistering hand speed at 3:15. There was a nice slow build-up and the end was Tony being Tony. Very tasteful, yet still technically brilliant
Great to see him play for the crowd for a change and not for himself. Much more impressive. Got to give it up he is fantastic but sometimes less is more.
@eamonandfriends I think he did this just to get the crowd into it you know, nothing to crazy and insane like he usually does. He wanted them to be able to keep up and keep the beat.
@grooveit100 You make a great point. First of all. Barker is overrated and shouldn't even be compared to Tony. The comparison game is touchy business anyway with personal taste and all that. I actually love this solo. There's enough solos here of him going off for 8 minutes. This has an ebb and flow to it while still being technically brilliant. There are so few guys ( that doesn't mean none ) with his mix of speed and power. He hits the drums with such authority that every stroke is heard.
sucks that the video wasn't with the audio, and I really don't want to see crowd shots, but this guy is a freak of nature (plus quite a bit of hard work, I'm sure), and I'm just lucky that I get to enjoy what I get, I guess :)
Travis Barker can't make music with a drum set and his ambidextrous abilities aren't even close to Tony's. Besides Travis' style never really changes. Tony on the other hand can play any type of music he wants to.
I honestly believe this guy would be adept at drumming to any and *every* genre. Not many drummers are versatile like that, and diversity is Royster's greatest strength. That man is King!
people think that a fast drummer is a good one. well i respectfully desagree.. a creative drummer is a good one. knowing what sounds cool on the moment, without planning is what it takes. although being fast may help (:
i totally agree with this.. it's all about the sound and not the speed.. i dont care if you can play at 1000 mph... if it doesnt sound good then i dont care! :P
You have literally no clue what you're talking about. 3:20 is about as fast as a human can move their hands. Do you realize this guy was a prodigy at 12, trained by Dennis Chambers, and is now one of the best in the world. If you are a drummer, this guy should make you want to head down to the basement and never come out. He has some insane solos here you need to see that will really make your comment look ridiculous.
If speed isn't important, the guy generally considered to be the best to ever play, Buddy Rich, would also be average. It's not the whole deal, but being able to play highly technical stuff at a blistering pace is not something to just scoff off. It requires thousands of hours of practice to reach this level. You have no clue what it takes to play at this level. His playing must be going right over your head. Let me know who the truly great drummers are that make Tony look average. No Searching
@Investrite1 He played a solo that involves the crowd. And he's way good. It was a GREAT solo. Non musicians, especially non drummers, won't be able to comprehend fast chops and quads, and crazy beats. So for its environment it was a great solo. Glad I could enlighten you ;).

@ViRusT87 how does joey play with personality all he does is play as fast as he can and travis moves around a lot when he plays so if that is personality then yeah i guess they have it.
3.15 You just don't see that everyday. To have that hand speed yet hit the drums with such authority requires physically ability most drummers dream of. He was put on earth to be a drummer.
arh, no, im not agree. ive seen some soloes of tony jr, because i heard of him, but i dont see the special with thim, i mean his a good drummer, but not the worlds greatest, look at travises rock soloes, their are great. what about Rob Bourdon? his a great drummer to! i love the beat he invented, and his amazing rhytns!
OK, I think we've fixed your listening palette to the narrw gamut of MTV corporate rock bands coming out of LA. I can tell you, they're really not all that as instrumentalists LOL.
Music isn't a sport, and punk rock said you can technically suck but make great music, like basquiat was a great painter.
However, if you're talking about technique, there's 1001 jazz players whose abilities shame those pseudo-punk egoists signed to major labels to pacify teenage kids & feed them a censored message.
Umm, I hate to tell you burst your bubble, but I don't think that Rob Bourdon has *any* original approaches dude.
He's absolutely generic and mediocre in all respects TBH. I've produced a lot of bands, and lots of them had way better players than him.
It's quite easy to play like that, I can do it myself. And I'm actually a guitar player.
Thing about this stuff is that if you play yourself, you realise what's hard & easy. Royster has some sly, sly tricks which if you try them... impossible.
@2cfhdh1 i totally agree. he is way overrated and really has no drumming skill other than hand speed. Tony however is amazing. He'd be a GOD if he ever did heavy metal

Xopie6400 2 years ago
okay i take that back, he is a great drummer but not one of the best, bored beat he plays, ? and boring solo, maybe 10 sek of the solo where nice
Xopie6400 2 years ago
It's simplified for non-drummers. Check out his stuff with ASAP and some of his other solos.

@Xopie6400
dood, he's pretty much at the limit of what the human body can achieve. Seriously, he is that good. Check the videos.
What impresses me is his loudness

come onn duudde! travis barker plays all genres! he plays all styles amazing,! tony doesnt? ;) and his pretty boring to watch
Xopie6400 2 years ago
Travis barker?! WTF! Dude the guy is *all* single strokes, totally right handed, plays with his arms like hammering nails.
Royster is trained by dennis chambers. He's jazz school. There is actually no competition.
That's like saying hulk hogan is a better fighter than bruce lee.
You won't see travis barker play jazz or classical percussion off sheet music. Tony could do it one handed
bishopdante 2 years ago
arh, no, im not agree. ive seen some soloes of tony jr, because i heard of him, but i dont see the special with thim, i mean his a good drummer, but not the worlds greatest, look at travises rock soloes, their are great. what about Rob Bourdon? his a great drummer to! i love the beat he invented, and his amazing rhytns!
Xopie6400 2 years ago
OK, I think we've fixed your listening palette to the narrw gamut of MTV corporate rock bands coming out of LA. I can tell you, they're really not all that as instrumentalists LOL.
Music isn't a sport, and punk rock said you can technically suck but make great music, like basquiat was a great painter.
However, if you're talking about technique, there's 1001 jazz players whose abilities shame those pseudo-punk egoists signed to major labels to pacify teenage kids & feed them a censored message.
bishopdante 2 years ago
Umm, I hate to tell you burst your bubble, but I don't think that Rob Bourdon has *any* original approaches dude.
He's absolutely generic and mediocre in all respects TBH. I've produced a lot of bands, and lots of them had way better players than him.
It's quite easy to play like that, I can do it myself. And I'm actually a guitar player.
Thing about this stuff is that if you play yourself, you realise what's hard & easy. Royster has some sly, sly tricks which if you try them... impossible.
bishopdante 2 years ago
The beat he *invented*
It's like saying somebody invented a new note on the piano. Total *claptrap*.
Dude, who invented the wheel? The knife.
Claiming to invent new beats is like inventing new letters of the alphabet... pointless. The job is to put them together eloquently

this could kick rob bourdons ass you faggot.

@2cfhdh1 i totally agree. he is way overrated and really has no drumming skill other than hand speed. Tony however is amazing. He'd be a GOD if he ever did heavy metal
