Shinnyoen was established in Tokyo by Itô Shinjô (1906-89) and his wife Itô Tomoji (1912-67). Shinjô began religious activities in 1936, and the movement gradually gained strength following World War II. Its membership increased rapidly in the 1970s, and became particularly well known due to the large number of artists and television personalities who have become members.
