@shadownoob83 FL wasn't THAT great. It was fun flying through all those systems trading and looking for ne equipment. But that was way to static and once you knew everything there was no real replayvalue. And the story ... i didn' really like it.

FS is way more epic and I'd love to know what happende to Bosh, where the shivans went, what this "greater threat than the shivans" are and if they constructed a new portal to earth *sigh*

@EssedariusMaiestas google hardlight productions, they have the source code for this game with the FS1 campaign available. They rebuilt the game with the original source code so you can use a modern computer, and modern graphics for this older game. I play it at 1920x1080 with fully updated start maps, 3D mapping, ships, enviroments and just an unreal game play experience. Imagine what FS3 would look like, and play FS2 like it lol. I'm running Win 7 also, no glitches playing FS2 with their mods.

Actually it is completly free. But it's hard to find the retail files and this sucks... Some months ago i found a linux installer with the retailfiles but i don't know where it was. -.- I have the original cds at home, but it's on german. It's possible to install SCP. If it wouldn't be german, i would search for a free host and would load it up. xD

There are some torrents. They all need more seeders. ;)

"Abandonware" is not any sort of real classification, and it *is* commercially available.

It's over 10 years old, and the company which made it does not reconise good old games on there website for a place where you can buy it. They recommenced if you want it to go to Bargain bins and E-bay. They also have shut down the PXO site which ran the multiplayer, so it is now on another site for the SCP. So really if you find it for free get it, it really isn't available.

The dogfighting simulator has been in dire need of new games. IL-2 sturmovick was the last, best sim I've played, everything else has been arcade style rogue squadron/ Ace combat crap.

The first time I saw this trailer, I was so impressed by it I saw it another ten times before stopping. Even though the final product wasn't as impressive as this, it still is quite an awe-inspiring game.

Actually I felt the CGI sucked and didn't do it credit. There is alot of game mechanics they added and improved upon. I just ordered this to play it for the first time.

I've only played the special short campaign demo cd. I liked it then, I'm sure I'll like it now.

You don't need to bother downloading this game illegally. It along with the first one is now open source:

WRONG!!! only the second one is in open source, the remade version of fs1 using fred2 is lesser, using the ai from fs2, to make the fs1 missions.

The trailer was made with the Alpha version, If you notice, a lot of FS1's graphics are still present.

Freespace was in no way related to Descent. They had to name the first one "Descent: Freespace" because there was a utility program called "Freespace" already.

Actually, that's not entirely true... the team behind the original descents split in two. One made Descent 3 and the other created The great war. There was quite a lot of arguing regarding the name descent. I do believe that in the end they had to change it from Descent - Freespace, to Freespace - The Great War.
