  • best scene :))))

  • I love this version as although the original is more them singing together where as this one sounds more like they are confronting each other which i think is how it should be... but y'know it's only my opinion!!! and i love Les Mis whoever is performing.

  • Oh gives me shivers!!!

  • Hmm I don't think this is a bad version, but i dunno I like the 10th Anniversary version better :)

  • I prefer neil patrick harris and jason segel... LOL.

  • Thumbs up for face-spitting at 1:39 ! ^^

  • Alfie Boe is the best Valjean.

  • @metabog agreed

  • I grew up on the TAC version, so this sounds kind of strange to me :3

  • prefers TAC version, but this a good version

  • 1:28

    enough said

  • YAY! Argument in singsong!

  • In my opinion the version by Colm Wilkinson and Philip Quast is better, simply because they have a better rhythm, wheras here it just seems like they are just singing next to each other instead of to eachother

  • @sykregen784 Cannot agree with you more - I find the 25th lacking in so many regards compared to the TAC

  • Tac version is powerful with poweful singers, this version's just boring and bland! Quast! <3

  • 24601

  • This Javert is fantastic. Who is this guy?

  • @makenna88 Norm Lewis. I love him!

  • My mum got me Alfie Boe's album, my god he's fantastic.

  • Thanks for upload, Mrdv904k

Wondeful, bravo both men. Alfie Bow is riviting and that low note Norm Lewis hits and holds @ :32 tingles my spine.

This show is in L.A. now, can't wait to see.

  • Shit damn, that's amazing.

I'm seeing Alfie Boe as Valjean this November, and I should probably bring an extra pair of socks cuz theyll probably be knocked off.

  • Best Confrontation EVER :D its sounds like they are proper havin a go at each other and their voices are so powerful.... Like Valjean and Javert should be

  • although i like quast better than norm, i like this version of 'the confrontation' better than the tac...it's much more intense...but i think i liked the original london cast one better than this one

  • You know, Valjean is suppose to be a monstrous man that can throw Javert/anyone around, cept here Javert is a monstrous black man.

  • @dankmon1992 lol, I haven't said this in a while, but I love ur comment!

  • I love how Javert's "Valjean, at last..." like, wakes Valjean up at the beginning, when he is grieving Fantine's death.

  • *Crazy fan girl scream*

I love the confrontation. I've seen Norm do it twice on stage and my mind was literally blown. Like... Wow. :|

  • I do have a preference to the 10th an. edition, but that's because I've heard it, based all the songs I did for Solo and Ensemble off it. But I'll give them credit, there is a chemistry between these two, just like in the other cast. Maybe not as strong, but it is still pretty epic.

  • i liked this version of les mis. but the 10th edition is so much better, its not even close. between colm, philip and lea salonga, they are the whole show and have so much more talent than anybody in the 25th edition.....

  • I prefer the tenth anniversary version MUCH better. Colm conveys so much rage, and his voice is perfection when he sings "my race is not yet run"... Colm and Philip are perfect as Valjean and Javert.

  • At 1:40 Javert spits out two strans of salaiva.

  • I like this version best but it seems to me that the person playing Valjean is focusing on singing more than acting. Which I can see why, since it's a concert but at some points it seems like he isn't really in character - you can tell by his eyes.

    Example: 1:33

  • @CreativityCrazed That's not really fair. While the projection has them facing each other, they are not facing each other on stage. I can imagine it would be difficult to know exactly where to point your eyes when you're not looking directly at someone, as in a staged performance.

  • This sounds more like a fight then a song. They use rate rhythm and pitch very well. I just wish I could hear the words better. These two are very good there is no denying that. I just am not a fan of this one, yet I totally respect the talent and training that got them this far.

The 10th has a slower rate and rhythm. I feel like they let the words tell the fight.

  • why is this audio so low?

  • I'm not a fan of Norm, it sounds like he's straining to hit each note. Can't beat Quast! And Alfie Boe is fantastic! He's got the musicality down and every note he sings is fully supported...however I just prefer Colm because he's more Rock Opera sounding than Legit Opera that Boe does.

  • @Dirschbag Alfie Boe seems intent on leaving the 'Legit Opera' world to do more rock. He just might end up competing with Colm eventually if he does that.

  • @IheartZorro Let's hope so, that would be AWESOME!!!

  • Norm Lewis is epic. I have no words for how amazing his Javert is! I feel so lucky to have seen him 5 times or so in London.

  • The way this song is organized is so cool. I love the one part when they both say Javert.

  • Am I the only one who think the outfit of the black singer looks like the one that Diversity wore on BGT?

  • oh my gosh!!!! i love there faces when they do in this! Alfie boe's eyes are just so awesome!!!! he looks so angry when he his singing this its like they are actually argueing! I love it!

  • i really dont understand why but i find the TAC BETTER IN SO MANY WAYS!!!!

  • @edrianquintos That's because when you listen to these guys sing, you are neither intimidated nor impressed by their presence, and their voices are hollow compared to the vibrant and warm voices of Wilkinson and Quast. Good, but not as good as the Dream Cast of TAC. Someone finally gets it.

  • @Aileron2112 i agree with you.. :)

  • @Aileron2112 i respect your opinion but i disagree slightly, look at later in the song when both of them are singing javert really starts to get into it. His vain is blugging and he looks ready to kill, as for Mr. Boe to me it felt like he was really ready for a fight. Mr Wilkinson and Mr. Quast are both really good, but so are Mr. Boe and Mr. Lewis

  • @byebyebirdy100 On the sole count of facial emotion, I would agree that Boe and Lewis are really conveying the full extent of their anger in a more theatrical way than Wilkinson and Quast. But I think the power that you would expect from Valjean and Javert as characters, with regard to their voices, is not met by these two performers.

  • @Aileron2112 eh...i really liked Mr. Boe's, personally i think if Boe and Quast did this song it would be completely awesome.

  • EPIC SPIT TIME AT 1:40

  • I like this Javert.

  • I love the 10th anniversary version but this one is just as amazing. The thing I love about this version is the passion and how it grew and overlapped at times. it was great.

  • Wow, haven't seen this much expression in any Javert for a long, long time. Amazing!

  • i think this is by far the best version. i've seen both this version and the 10th anniversary and this one blows it out of the water!! i don't know why people think the other one is so great, it pales in comparison to this. alfie boe= god.

  • Their voices arent as pure as the 10th anniversary. good, ill give them that. but childs play compared to the real valjean and javert

  • ouch a pale version of the real thing..10th version..like a school band

  • 1:28 *dies from the sheer amazingness*

  • @MusicLifelove93 1:39 i died a 2nd time on that.

  • Eh. This is good...But I still like 10th Anniversary Better.

  • all other versions I've senn of this are soooo calm...this...perfection!

  • _ok, so i was crying because of fantine's death until javert says ''VALJEAN'' at the beginning of the song which totally freaked me out.....!!! its awesome.......!!!

  • Me at when Javert yells "No! 24601!": O_O (Valjean's gonna get it!)

Me at 1:28-1:49: *passes out from sheer awesomeness*

Javert must have threatened the 10 people who disliked this. = )

  • Both of them are wonderful and such real.

I love Colm W. but Alfie Boe's voice is so.... nice. He is Jean Valjean.

    Norm Lewis is great, too.

  • Is anyone else's sound a little weird? Echoey, or something? Dunno how to explain it.

  • i love both alfie boe and norm lewis but yeh just this particular scene i thort wasnt quite as good as the TAC. still awesome tho

  • You have no rights! Come with me 24601!

  • What's better than this? NOTHING!

Easily the best version of the best song in the best musical...

  • an accurate impression of the french?

  • I Love that javert is an actual base in this version! :)

  • And what the hell is 24601?

  • @DetectiveTective 24601 was Jean Valjean's prison number

  • @garthtater41 oh, ok. ty lol

  • OMG I remember seeing this on TV! I had no idea what the hell was going on until I saw the frickin' Youtube ads and I was like, Oh, I know where this is from!

  • Hmmm they seem to lack the passion of the 10th anniversary version, also, the man who plays 24601 doesnt seem to have as strong of a voice in this one, he seems to lack conviction and desperation. It was good just not the 10th anniversary good.

  • @alliecat889 Completely disagree about lacking passion. I didn't see Quast's veins about ready to burst in anger. Norm's about ready to have a stroke by the end of this confrontation. Alfie (24601) plays it angry here as well, not desperate. Different interpretation from Colm's. Just as valid, IMO. If the title is 'Confrontation', that implies to me fighting, as here, not pleading in desperation. I am sure they are deliberately trying *not* to copy the 10th, they need to make this their own.

  • 1:32-1:42 was just plain epic

  • "Real men fight it out in counterpoint"

  • anyone norm's spit go flying at 1:40??? and btw, when alfie sings "I am warning you javert, i'm the stronger man by far." the song officially gets epic

  • @GreenPearlNatalee Not only that, but notice the veins in Javert's forehead about ready to pop in the 'spit' part. They aren't even noticeable earlier. Talk about going apopleptic. Really got into the character.

  • Love Alfie's little sneer after "I'll do what must be done!"

  • Don't like the Javert, he sounds like he's on the verge of losing his voice. GO QUAST!!!!!!

  • So there 's a 99% chance I'm seeing this show in Septembre....and I'm thinking I'm going to need to bring tissues.

  • This is so fantastic. Both of their vocal ranges are insanely vast! I'd kill to be there right now!:):):)

  • My brother and I sing this song all the time and we have it DOWN!!!

  • @Broadwaygirl01 broadway GIRL? I assume you play valjean ;)

  • @homestar2112 Yes I'm a girl and no I play Javert, my brother does Valjean. Hahahahaha!

  • @homestar2112 hahah that's awesome. I bet you nail that low F at the beginning. :)

  • This Javert is so INTENSE

  • The TAC concert was, for me, a superior show in every way with the possible exception of The Confronation. I still prefer the perfomances of Quast and Wilkinson, but the visual on the 25th video of the two 'singing heads' is more visceral.

  • Apparently Norm Lewis didn't get much of a chance to rehearse with the rest of the cast , as he flew in shortly before the concert, which might explain why hasn't gelled as much as the TAC version.

  • @Respectthewilderness ...Colm Wilkinson played Valjean in the TAC, not Javert...Javert was Philip Quast...and don't hate on Norm Lewis. While I agree Philip did a better job, Norm still did the part justice. Though next time before attempting to sound like an expert, don't confuse the actors. Hardcore Les Mis fans would slaughter you.

  • i didn't hear an earthquake when veljean said "my race is not yet run".....

    TAC FTW !!!

  • the voice of this javert is so weak and silent compared to the javert of the 10th (Colm)

  • "my race is not yet ruuuuuuUUUUUN!

  • At the end of this, when Fantine and Cosette pause next to each other, oh my God, just absolute chills.

  • @meginmd right? I was like woah! :O

  • I think they've got very good voices, however, they don't blend well together as they should even in a confrontation. I know it's a clique, but TAC was much better in opinion because their voices blended well together and you still got the sense that they were arguing.

  • The new orchestrations and different people in the roles, is inevitably going to make everything sound different to the 10th Anniversay show - doesn't necessarily make it better or worse, just different. We all have our favourite performers and they are always going to be "the best" in our eyes. It is also difficult to portray something out of the context of the show in a concert environment. I enjoyed the 25th Anniversary and have added the DVD to my collection.

  • The 10th anniversary had so much more power than this one :/

  • i don't think the hating on how it sounds on this is not entirely valid it sounds so much better on the dvd imo

  • why is everyone dissing this video? i don't see what's wrong with it. and the only reason norm sounds weak is because alfie's voice is too strong (if you watched the part when the 4 valjeans sing together, you'll know what i mean). this version is just as good, if not better.

although, probably the only problem was that nick jonas was in it... no offense to anyone, but he just sounded really whiny compared to everyone else.

  • 1:45 Valjean says "If I have to kill you here, I'll do what must be done."

    woah.

  • I must say, I think the 10th Anniversary wins in most of the scenes, but this one I really liked just as much :-) The passion, camera angels, and the flaring spit! lol

  • Was Norm Lewis out of breath or something? Very weak.

  • am I the only one who likes this version better than the TAC? Maybe its because to me they sound like they are actually fighting--like they are both trying to sing over each other.

I think I would faint if Alfie Boe and Philip Quast did this together. IT WOULD BE SO BEAST.

  • @TwistandSh0ut I agree with you on all accounts.

  • @TwistandSh0ut NOOOOOOOO I love it so much more than the others :)

  • @TwistandSh0ut no, you're right, this version has such tension and emotion, and a better tempo for this song, superior to the 10th in that regard. Norm Lewis and Alfie ares the best as well, at :40 the look on Norm's face makes me want to give him my lunch money...

  • Comment removed

  • @juststewit Javert: F YOUR LUNCH MONEY. HAND OVER YOUR WALLET, BACKPACK, AND ALL PERSONAL BELONGINGS.

Me: -meekly gives him rights to my house- OAO Please don't hurt me.

  • @ShadowinEX

HAHAHAHA YEAH javert would make the best schoolyard bully ever xD

  • i like this version :) i prefer both this jean valjean and javert, but the originals are good too

  • I prefer this javert. =P

  • @LilWayneMetalGod I accuse you of reading the mouseover text of xkcd #301 (Limerick). Am I right?

  • Norm Lewis is the better Javert.

  • @lilwaynemetalgod shut up. To everyone here you ate just making yourself sound stupid because you obbvisly don't know what you are talking about so maybe you should shut. No not maybe you should shut up.

  • I love everything about this concert.

    ...Except Nick Jonas...

    Haters gonna hate.

  • @BwayBoundChristian i'm not an obsessed fancreeper of nick, but i like him okay. why dont you? its just out of curiosity. im not trying to convert u to liking him or anything. do you not like him coz other people do, his singing, or just his appearance?

  • @StarWarsObsession42 First off, I love your Username. :) Stars Wars, ftw.

I've never really been a fan of his singing- especially here. I mean, he has potential, but he's not prepared enough to sing this role. You can hear it in the way he sings mainly through his nose and how he cuts off his phrases. (I know this isn't a Nick Jonas video, my apologies, Mrdv904k) and his acting is sub-par here. He just needs to brush up his technique before he takes on a beast like Les Mis. (: Thanks for asking

  • @BwayBoundChristian yes, star wars is def FTW!!! lol thank you for answering so politely!!! u dont find much of that anymore... lol anywayz, hes still a learning singer and used to pop singing. but this is one of his best singings ever. his acting is okay (partially coz u dont really need to do a lot of acting here) i will agree his voice is a bit nasally, but he controls himself very well... or better than he does with his brothers. I'll also agree that Les Mis is huge and he should wait... lol

  • @LilWayneMetalGod ok. bud, stop watching these vids. You have posted way too many comments that have either insulted or bugged people. and miserables is french for miserable. or was that too hard to figure out?

  • @magabel1 um...it's "Javert" not "jervert"

  • this valjean and jarvet are great!!!

  • come at me bro!

  • @LilWayneMetalGod it's. A. Musical. And he's not a villian. And if you think it's stupid than why are you watching a clip of it?

  • Jean Valjean is nothing now!

  • The difference in tones between Alfie Boes voice and Javerts is a beautiful combo; This song is supposed to be full of tension, and they performed it wonderfully.

  • I don't like the way Alfie spaces his words, he waits til the last minute and then yells it out, instead of easing into the words.

  • I like the TAC more, but they're completely different interpretations. This version does have it's strengths. The orchestra is a little better if you ask me. The line "I was born inside a jail" sounds better up and octave. Also, the song sounds more like a fight. In a way, that's a plus. It's more fitting. The TAC is better, but I think both are great (in completely different ways) You can kill me now.

  • @LilWayneMetalGod

the black guy is NOT a villain at all! He is doing his job! May be you could watch it before you make such a comment.

  • @LilWayneMetalGod whining about this play isn't exactly helping their look on you

  • I personally like this version better then the 10th. Don't get me wrong the 10th is amazing, but I just like Norm as Javert better then Phillip Quast. He has more anger in this song then Phillip did in my opinion.

  • @LilWayneMetalGod The title is french for "The Miserable ones" "The poor ones" and somethin else beacuse it is about those people. Javert hasn't always been black. He's been played by white people too. This guy just happened to be black. And it is not a stupid play. It is an awsome musical. Maybe a bit sad in places (but being "the miserable ones" it would be) but it is a awsome story told through amazing songs

  • @LilWayneMetalGod ....ok? 1)this is NOT a stupid play. Its one of the greatest MUSICALS in the world. 2)Does it matter if Norm is the villian? the villians are some of the greatest parts ever. and how the hell is it racist? and 3) the reason its called Miserables is because this takes place during the paris uprising of 1832 while rich students are fighting for the POOR and HOMELESS miserable people. and if this is a joke, then disregard what i said lol

  • I like both versions of this song and how the actors actually made the character their own instead of carbon copies of one another. Very impressive

  • I prefer this version. To my eyes and ears it actually gives off the opinion that Javert has hatred for Valjean and does sound like they are fighting (as stated by the user below). In the TAC version it's pretty much just a sing off and that just doesn't do it for me. Colm's voice annoyed me as well, Alfie's was crisper by far.

  • Comment removed

  • I do not like this! Bring Back Philip and Colm please! ;) The Javert has very weak vocals and Valjean out sings him! Not a great duet fellas! The spine chills were not here for me this time. The POWER was lacking big time! There was no hatred nor was there frustration! This song is about a lifetime of redemption, searching, hatred and death. There needs to be more emotion and depth to the characters. If it was as easy as just singing on stage Les Mis would not be as big as it is! Thank you!

  • Norm Lewis is pathetic compared to Philip Quast. . .

  • I love it how everyone compares Alfie boe and Norm Lewis to Colm Wilkinson and Philip Quast they both brilliant versions of what is particularly a hard piece

  • The TAC version of this is better. There is something off about this one. :/

  • @StrumThatTofu tac????

  • @dirty06maggot tac = Tenth Anniversary Concert

  • geez stop bashing norm and others! every actor who plays javert is amazing in their own way! they all have their faults, and their amazing aspects.

  • Hey let's stop comparing and just take it for what it is.

    Epic

  • Earl Carpenter was amazing as javert should of had him in the concert !!

  • FATAL :-(

    bad cadence.

  • The Valjean in TAC overacts it a bit imho

  • I actually prefer this version of the Confrontation in comparison to the TAC version. In my opinion the TAC (whilst sounding better vocally) is a bit plain, I think the Orchestra isn't quite as dramatic, and Colm and Philip almost sound like they're trying to get the song right. Here I think the faster pace lends to the nature of the song, and Alfie and Norm (to me) make it sound like Valjean and Javert trying to kill eachother.

Feel free to kill me for my opinion now. ;) xD

  • I'll admit I prefer Phillip Quast to Norm Lewis as Javert but I don't think there's a huge gulf between them, and Norm is certainly strong enough to be convincing. Then again, I haven't seen both productions in person so maybe there's a difference in stage presence I've missed.

  • Well. That was a bit...underwhelming.

  • The role of Javert is composed to be sung by a baritone, and (at least that's what it seems to me) Norm Lewis isn't. That's one of the reasons why he sounds weak.

The other reason is that most of us have Philip Quast in mind, who is an outstanding perfomer. In the TAC concert, he petrifies the audience only with his eyes.

This concert might be staged much better than the TAC, but the cast frome TAC was way better chosen.

  • @oaiturriaga Totally agree with you!

  • @oaiturriaga Norm Lewis isn't a baritone? What?! He is a baritone! He's definitely NOT a tenor. He might even be a bass-baritone.

  • @PhanPhanPhanPhanPhan @sgwbalhaar Well, I've heard him singing "Bring him home" (wich definetly is not a baritone song) and his ending notes at Javert's Suicide and pretty high too. But even if he is a baritone, he sounds weak for the role to me. Of course everyone has their own opinion, but watching many Javerts in my life, Lewis sounds boring and powerless compared to many of them (including Earl Carpenter, who played the bishop in the concert. I'd love to have seen him as Javert instead)

  • @oaiturriaga Do you know a lot about music? I mean, are you a musician? A singer? Singers know that voice type is based on sound, not range. I've met tenors with the range of a bass-baritone, and baritones with the range of a soprano! His vocal quality, range, color, everything is the one of a baritone. I agree, I do not believe he's a really good Javert, and Earl Carpenter from the tour was absolutely perfect. His suicide was amazing! I wish Colm Wilkinson could've played the Bishop there!

  • @oaiturriaga Are you serious? Norm Lewis is a baritone singer. Your comment makes no sense :/

I think Norm sounds strong and I actually prefer this cast to the 10th, but then everyone has their own opinion on what sounds better so nobody will ever truly be 'right'.

  • YOU KNOW NOTHING OF JAVERT!

  • sorry to be a hater, but this is freaking pathetic. there's no emotion, and they sing WAY to fast

  • @smilyface61 I couldn't aree more! Look up the 10th aniversity version of this it is a THOUSAND times better!

  • @smilyface61 I agree, I like Alfie Boe and think he is great in the show, but the tac version is just so much better, Philip Quast is just so perfect as Javert, cold and venomous.

  • Quast's acting is better, he brings more subtle emotion into his voice and facial expressions whereas Norm seems too overdramatic at times. Both are good, but Quast is amazing.

Personally, I think its funny that we are all on here arguing about who they think is better in this version verses the TAC. I should be writing a 6-page history paper that is due tomorrow, but somehow I find myself on you tube...watching and comparing the Les Miserables concerts. Hmmm. Priorities are a bitch :)

  • Norm Lewis is kind of weak in this song... I saw him in the London version and he was amazing!

  • WON'T YOU GUYS JUST SHUT UP AND ENJOY THE MUSIC, GOD DAMN IT!

  • I prefer this Valjean. Prefer Quast as Javert.
