out here on the barricades it was hard to cough up $40.00 for a GOF show in 1980...but i love a woman in uniform and i dream alone so i paid, saw & heard everything i ever wanted from a band. i had a cheeseburger to go from the mc donalds right next to the exxon station after the show...blinkin' and paralyzed.
My friends and I saw these guys at a place called Emarald City In Jersey just across the river from Philly. It was sometime in the 80s. After the show we found out we had a
flat tire.As we were starting to change the tire "the gang of four" came over and helped us out. We shared the beer and other substances we had left in the car. They hung out for awhile and after went on theyer merry way. Nice guys. the show was great too.
tattoos are confessions, wait...i don't like a thing that is suppose to be good but starts with the lettering con, fession, being quiet, if it is great then why is in contrary? hmmm...there it is con again....anyway tattoos are proof of the evil you have done...hmmm...is body art any differnent? can white man speak with forked tongue then woods in CA prisons are spliting their tongues? hmmmm
Even their bad stuff was better than 98% of the music that's out there. I agree that their first two albums are classics but you should take a second look at some of the stuff they released after 1981. There's some real diamonds in rough that you're overlooking. Gang of Four got their political and artistic views from Situationist International. Goggle it for more info.
They don't make music like this anymore. Great post. GOF was a cult band that was part of a cult movement. The underground artists will never die. Generation after generation, they will continue to rebel, to create art that is alergic to the mainstream.
I've been a Gang of Four fan for years. I like this song too, but don't quite know what to make of them as rock'n'roll psycho killers... I always thought they were marxists.
Probably the most overtly political band of the post punk/new wave era-& one of the most influential too-listen to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers guitar work-IDENTICAL to the GOF sound...only PIL had such a distinct& original sound as GOF at this time
At what time????-GOF-first recordings 1979???-oh I am so sorry!!-the first recordings were late 70s-my elder brother had a number of singles-listen to Entertainment(1980)-then judge my "pretentious" comments in that context-comments did not apply specifically to this track-otherwise leave your(pseudo)sarcasm&sanctimonious dirge for all the chavs on YouTube
Sorry "matey" had the records&attended the gigs so bugger off
GOF = Gang of Four, who wrote & performed this song. PIL was another band, "Public Image Limited", which was fronted by Johnny Rotten of Sex Pistols fame. Are those the acronyms you meant?
@totalstranga 100% agree...everytime I mention Gang of Four to someone, they never know what I am talking about. So many bands from the last 10 years have sounded like Gang of Four replicas.

not the greatest representation of GOF. Heck they lost me after "I like a man in uniform"

This is a weird-ass video, but the chorus is real mellow and cool.

Exactly... they WERE marxist. Now it's time for the fucking postmodernism and the empty messages with cool images... bad times for the music.

criminally underrated band. I hear people always saying how TJAMC or P.I.L. are, but these guys never get mentioned. ever.

Could someone please tell me what all these acronyms mean? I've just mastered the finer technological nuances of a hammer and nails.
