  • Hi Jacob, Liebman has many recordings that are well worth checking out. One of the ones I really like is "Elements-Water" featuring some very unusual and wonderful playing by Pat Metheny as well.

  • Could someone recommend some Liebman recordings? Like a starting point? The only recording I've heard is "Voyage". Everything of him on youtube is from the past ~10 years and I just can't get into his playing for some reason. Judging from comments on other videos, it seems if you dislike his playing you are instantly a fan of smoothjazz/Kenny G... What is Liebman's "equivalent" of Lovano's "Tenor Legacy" and "Rush Hour"?

  • Its difficult not to compare with the orginal... unto itself, I dig it. But the original version happens to be one of my favorite trane compositions and performances.

  • honestly i dont really like this.... till about 8:37 where it finally decides to come together...

  • @jbluna2

Listen to late Coltrane sometime. Or Ornette Coleman's "Free Jazz".

At least then you'll have the context in which to appreciate this.

  • damn !

  • To many loser write because it´s free. Listen or change!

  • What is Ravi doing there...LOL ?

  • Love the idea of calling yourselves summit conference! If you guys are world leaders show us the sheep who follow you. A pathetic rendering full of fluff and puff of a 20th century masterpiece.

  • these guys are all miming. Look closely.

  • @TehWinnerz are you kidding? of course they're not miming, you've clearly never played an instrument or jazz...

  • @1greenopc I am a pro musician and yes they are all miming and I think there is a click track with the drummer

  • @TehWinnerz I shot the video and it was live, with no click track.

  • @JazzVideoGuy you must be their PR guy then or something because I can know more than you do about miming obviously

  • @TehWinnerz Really, are you Marcel Marceau?

  • @TehWinnerz nope.

  • @TehWinnerz lol

  • Reminds me of "warm up" time before our concert band would rehearse!

  • Yeah!! so many sounds all going at once!!!

  • ouch

  • Wonderfull music. ty.

  • polydiatonic thinks that this piece ought to be "liked" by everyone.

Everybody pretend that it's "likeable", just to humor him .....

What a lovely, melodic and ear-soothing piece this is!

(Meantime, I'm going to put the volume down and listen to my cat scratch his testicles instead - more soothing).

  • @jazzflutist Very funny. LOL

  • I just love reading a bunch of comments from no talent musicians about guys who can really play

  • @whykatera81 you are an ignorant person if you think that checking out your charts means you can't play. I've seen tons of pics of trane, miles, ornette looking at a lead sheet or whatever..get real or get educated. You also might try not being, or at least acting, a racist.

  • @polydiatonic i know you think you know it all but ima burst your bubble. first im a musician as well and read charts all the time. im sayin what the hell does free jazz have to do with reading? nothing thats why its called free! you never seen trane read onstage when he was doing his thing! his free thing! come on its an oxymoron freejazz charts. second how can a black person be racist... another oxymoron. im not gonna go lynch you or kick you off the bus or have police dogs eat on u. Idiot!

  • I know I'm probably wasting my time because if you think a black person can't be racist you must be a complete moron. Ever hear of an "Uncle Tom"? Btw, where does this posting say ANYTHING about this being "free" jazz? Only in the comments, not in the actual posting. There's a differene between totally free and what these guys are doing. "A LOVE SUPREME", if you kow what that is, was not "FREE". Ignorant, ignorant and closed minded that's what you are.

  • who said i was black?Your ignorance shines so brightly furthermore just because it doesnt say freejazz doesnt mean it isnt that. These are clearly compositions from his more free period. Ive never seen ornette trane or any of those people play their music with a chart live while playing free music. it dont make sensde. get out of your jazz snob world join the real world

  • You said: "how can a black person be racist" Duh...

  • so, music has a colour. Why didnt i see that. ty so much for opening my eyes. By the way, what colour are you? I wouldnt want to make a mistake.

  • hahahahahahahaha! i lol'd. Good trolling.

  • Before i state my comment, I just want everyone to know that each one of these musicians individually is freaking amazing, and all are extremely talented individuals. That being said, this particular recording is pretty freaking out of tune, and the horn players are not playing perfectly in time with each other. Examples: The first 4 measures, 2:33,, and around 3 minutes.

Once again these musicians are very amazing, but this is not a good example of ensemble playing.

  • What makes you think this was intended as ensemble playing? Open your mind.

  • @Pakj1234 the intonation here is marvelous you must be out of your mind if you think this is not top notch playing...

  • I think it would be in everyones best interest to refrain from voicing their opinions and simply listen to this beautiful music that we so much have the privilege to listen to. Do not compare, do not judge; this will only leave you in vain :)

  • Give Ravi some time. Some players have to develop. Betty Carter the singer sounded weak when I heard her on a record with Ray Charles back in the day. But we all know the monster she turned out to be. McCoy Tyner was a late bloomer as well. There are only handfull who burst on the scene full blown. This kind of collective improvisation was introduced in the late 60's, as the "New Wave of Jazz". Of course the New Orleans players had been playing collectively a long time before this.

  • @Flextones Ravi is a wonderful player, has been for years...wtf are you talking about? And McCoy being a late bloomer? Are you kidding?? Do you consider "coltrane's sound" to be somehow "unbloomed" for McCoy in about 1962 when he recorded that??

  • Well, for those who don't like this, I hear Miley Cyrus has a new one out. C'mon people, this is what jazz is about - experimentation - warts and all. Not the "perfected in the studio" stuff that passes for music today. Parts of it remind me of "Ascension". Not an easy listen, maybe, but with the spirit of the "new thing" that I'm glad hasn't died.

  • Love Trane...he was the greatest...now Ravi...hmmm...he's kinda just a nice guy, but no real voice, originality or passion coming out his horn.

This song I heard Trane play it on record, but these guys sound like a bunch of white boys!! No color in the arrangement or approach...kinda sad in a big way...ugh!!!!!

  • what does their skin color have to do with their musical ability? "white boys" can't play as well as black boys?

  • Don't go there brother...DON'T go there! lol

  • Touche... The Emperor's new clothes, and that's just what this is ... Mutton dressed as lamb. Worse; out-of-tune. John Coltrane killed on ballads and was just silly on a lot of experimental stuff. But hey, we can't say things like that. Like hell! These idiots sound like there're at a kazoo convention. Out the f*@! of tune and if you can't hear that, give up music.

  • Why do you think that free expression must be confined to the cliche notion of being 'in tune' or 'out of tune'. Open your mind.

  • why? because I'm the 'recipient' of this muck. if they choose to play in a garage amongst themselves, fine. but this is horseshit, no mistake...

  • @catandpiddle

Silly?? Are you denying that his Pharoah Sanders and the late quartet period was some of his best work??

  • I am from Philly as Trane was. My jazz teacher was a friend of Trane. Many people in the Philly music circles knew each other. He told me Trane was just getting into Tonal Centers but didn't quite "get it" - before he died. I liked his earlier stuff when he really knew what he was doing. He was experimenting here ... I think. That should be left in the "shed" till it's ready. Read "The Emperor's Clothes". Might apply. Sounding like a Zoo now.

  • Funny, for someone from Philly, you're quite close-minded. How did THAT happen?

  • wh asked you?

  • sok tau

  • With a Latin spin or a philosophical one, the fact is, they're out-of-damn-tune ...

  • They using the F scale alot, maybe in myxolydian moede. Its all freetime, free anything ,a hilarious sound picture like you get in abstract art, a bit like a zoo too. everything kids like to do.,but they are still in tune, and in the beginning was some fragments of melody. marvellous.

  • You don't seem to "get it" either.

  • this is like a master piece of art that you look at and don't understand. and every now and then, you think you catch something and finally understand, but then it slips away again. i would never diss Coltrane. i think i just don't get it at times, but its beautiful lol

  • You don't understand music.

  • That's referred to as dissonance in circles of awareness...."out of tune" in commercial pop pablum.

  • This is beautiful. Close your eyes. Just listen. I can imagine a huge playground full of kids and people running around, a carnival, a coral reef full of colorful fishes. I can feel the sun and the wind and the water. I thought this was improvisation at first, but it's an actual composition, isn't it? It gets better the more you listen to it, like a good movie or a great view. There is just so much to it. Sweet.

  • sooo sooo sooooooo cursi

  • Totally. Its like the most relaxing Jazz comp. I've ever heard....

  • wow what a clueless comment. RB is absolutely happening on this track.

  • I don't know. I also wouldn't have chosen Brecker. Maybe a Marsalis brother. Or two.

  • I believe Randy Brecker was involved, not only for his ability to play, but for his sentimental reasons. His brother, Michael, passed away 8 months before this show. What better way to carry on with Sax Summit than to have the brother of the legendary Michael Brecker come in to play. I feel that if you replaced R. Brecker with W. Marsalis then you would lose the energy and emotional aspect that Randy would bring. Is Marsalis a better player than Brecker? Well that varies on the person you ask.

  • I agree with that statement, I have a hard time seeing wynton do much better than brecker did on this. But if you want something really happening it'd have to be Roy! :-D

  • Of course Randy is there for his brother -- that's why these people are such insulting dipshiz for commenting like that.

  • I agree with you ! Sometimes in music, you gotta let aside the purely technical aspect of music, to focus on the emotional aspect of it... This is beautiful.

  • JAZZ VIDEO GUY IS THE BEST.

  • Please God, have mercy

  • Did people pay money to see this?

  • No, no money. It's a contract. To get in the door, you sign over your first male born.

  • We know it is possible for very good musicians to play crummy music. We also know that bad musicians can actually put out good music (on the odd occasion). This sounds like good musicians warming up, before playing anything.

  • That's because you're not 'listening'...

  • @jazzflutist you apparently don't have any frikking idea of what you're talking about. This is some very hip and well executed and challenging music. If you can't hear it, open your ears and shut your mouth and listen until you get it.

  • what this at the montreal jazz fest by any chance?

  • it was recorded a september 23

  • ahh.. right.. my bad heh

  • Dude shut up man..... You apparently dont understand any of this. Can you hang with these guys? Prolly not... SO shut up and lean from your superiors. This is beautiful shit reeking of emotion. Go listen to some weird al or something.

  • i dont think that you are talking "shit" or so as "SAXJAZZ19" says. they are one of the best musicians to exist, but i think EVERYONE has the right to say what he likes and doesnt like.and i think its RIDICULOUS and childish to anonymously rate this comment negative- i had the fortune to hang out with Dave Liebman here for some days at the local "Jazz Summer" and hes a VERY nice guy and a great personality but i also have to say that i also dont really like THIS video.

  • SaxJazz is right..... Effortless mastery

  • this music is not always about how nice it sounds. i doubt that if you can't be appreciative enough to respect that these men are offering their souls to the listener and the other musicians, then you haven't yet reached the point in your own musical endeavor where you can touch someone as greatly as any of these people.

  • This is really awesome. And also moving, to have Randy sitting in for his brother.

  • Ravi is the son of john coltrane

  • Ravi?

  • Great clip, cool to see Randy Brecker really goin for it...

    ...(Billy Hart (!) )

  • yeah, billy's the shit

  • Beautiful

  • Yes..I agree. More please...this is fantastic. Thanks for posting this.

  • So glad to see this. Most people are asleep when it comes to Trane's later music.

  • More, please! This is incredible.
