  • Great video man, its a shame how we get ripped from the electric companies when the technology exist to reduce our consumption a great deal.

  • how many watts is your panel

  • Only needed in America!! not in the UK cause we are a developed country and have an infrastructure that works... :)

  • i bet you do

  • cool, we are doing the same thing in Coastal US for the next hurricane/power outage. Would like to run a mini-fridge for 1 week. We have 3 (so far) deep cycle walmart boat batteries

  • You should use SLA marine or UPS patteries. Higher AHR :)

  • great setup & nice for running car amps & subs in your room! 12v heater would be cool too. perfect for power cuts :D

  • hehe good Job! eh how ever you for got to mention one tiny thing..Whats the watage rating of that power suply, it Looks like atleast a 1kv or 1,ooo Wats.

I jsut also waould like to state that the ingerters range from 200 to 1,000 wats and I heard even 2,0000 wats are acailiable for a pretty penny. another thing to note, with more batteries connect them in parele circut and gives a time limit on how long they run..also for your cooking need use a conduction oven and or stove

  • nice set up but after you get your more powerfull batterys dont forget to place them in a well ventalted are as betterys like that tend to give off hydrogen gas :P

  • Not if they are SLA like he's using in the video. They are safe :)

  • Dude, You beat me to the punch. I wanted to do that one of these days here in my room too. I'll drop you a PM

  • Wow, This brain is being put to good use All those wires zig zagging to 12V equipment all over the place reminds me of Snakes and Ladders You need to come up with a board game with simplistic instruction cards to explain rules, the ins and outs, how to do,the uses of,inverters, batteries, lights, cords, wires,

tools, cautions, what not to do,by-laws and on and on, surrounding going off the grid.

  • nice video man i love your room how much did that all cost you in usd? im thinking about that same thing but in my shed and with that 12volt converter to 120volt doe's that chew your battery?

  • the best kind of batt to use would be a deep sicole boat batt

  • well this is basically a deep cycle batt and they work great...ive got a few, but i see your point as to why you would want a marine battery, sonsidering a boat's exessive current draw

  • Cig socket taped to the wall ? Have you thought about a fire extinguisher ?

  • It does not get 'THAT' hot. I don't even heat up the cigarette lighter thing; it just acts as a power outlet.

  • there is a way of thinking we have in the electrics field we say if it can be used as one then its a hazard weather it is used or not see some ppl could see it and go oo lighter and it could (not will) but runs the risk of a possible fire, take no chances play it safe

  • I just reached over an pushed the lighter in. It took maybe about 10 seconds to heat up and pop out. The lighter socket itself barely even got warm to the touch.

I can also note that the back of this particular socket is ceramic and sealed off. There's nothing exposed on the back.

  • Also, where did you get it? And how much did it cost? Thanks!

  • I ordered it from the invertersRus website. It cost me about $140 at the time I bought it. It works pretty well but does buzz a little bit if you put a lot of load on it.

  • Thats an aims 300 watt pure sine wave inverter right? Do you like it? Does it work good? I am thinking about getting one, would you recommend it?

  • why not just use the inverter for everything and not use the 12V car plugs.

  • If you really want to see a full scale 12v renewable system in action, go check out an RV as all lighting is 12v in most and most have inverters for alot of the 120v systems. Solar panels, inverter/chargers, generators, and of course alternators to charge the batteries. Some very high end units will even run roof air conditioning off of the inverters. But this is definitely a good start to learning about 12v uses. It's cool to be the only one with lights on in a power outage.

  • I know how the electrical system in a Recreation Vehicle is set up and in fact, those deep cycle batteries are house batteries from my neighbor's motor home.

  • o.o

    Typo.

"Lets just hope those little fuckin' kids (Don't) come by and mess with your electrical set up."

  • nice setup :) check my up :)

  • can you charge those batteries with a 2 amp car charger

  • That was what I ended up using but you want to watch it carefully. Gel cells shouldn't go above 13.8 volts. Most car chargers will charge to about 14.4 volts but this may be too much for a gel cell from what I've read.

  • realy good if you live in a verry verry remote place and not many people visit you

  • BTW, how long does it last on the full operation? (like in the end of the videO)

  • Its kinda ghetto, but i like it!

  • This is really great mate, congrats! All you need now is an M2 automotive pc/psu) & a mini itx! ;) most older flatscreens run on 12v too.

  • I bought a Targus Auto/Air power adapter from Fry's Electronics to run my laptop computer straight off 12 volts. My laptop is a Hewlett Packard but it also has connectors for Dell, Toshiba, IBM, Gateway, and Sony laptops. I plug it into the cigarette lighter socket on my desk.

I have a LCD HDTV now but the power supply is built in instead of a separate unit so I still have to use the inverter. At least it uses less energy than the CRT TV I had, about 38 watts versus 72 watts

  • What, if anything, re-charges your batteries? Kind of like how a car has an alternator... Please forgive me for not being more technical.

  • The transformer and diodes act as a "trickle charger" for now but I eventually plan to use solar panels to charge the battery.

  • At the end of your clip, you show all the items running off your battery. How much current are you drawing at that point? Since your battery is not new, have you tested how long it will operate under a given load?

  • I was drawing 6 amps at that time which would only last about 30 mins. I run around 2 to 3 amps most at a time on the SLA battery which would last a little over an hour before it drops to 10.5 volts.

I currently have a pair of 220 amp hour 6 volt golf cart batteries hooked up in series. I'll make an updated video soon.

  • i have the same kinda setup as you, even the same 12v 12ah battery, i can run my flat screen monitor on my pc for about 8 hours! it draws 1.9 amps. I also have 4X 12watt & 3X 1.5watt solar panels linked up to the battery, on a sunny day the battery will still charge while i use the monitor! I should post a video....... keep up the good work

  • Sure, go ahead; I like to see how others set up small scale renewable energy systems.

You can also check out "12 volt room II" for my updated system.

  • That already exisists, but it`s great that you did it yourself. I think a lucrative career in electronics is on your horizon.

  • Interesting. Im planning on building something like that to power emergency lights and to serve as a backup power supply for my security camera system.

  • You gave me an inspiration...

  • with just regular college physics and automotive electrical knowledge you can achieve this....good setup though...when power goes out

  • Yep; it's easy to set up if you have good knowledge about electrical wiring; especially low voltage and/or DC circuits.

I listen to the radio/cds and charge phone off it all the time but it's also great to have light during a power outtage.

  • you sound really nerdy no offence but yea nice stuff i would never of thought of that REALY COOL

  • damn thats awesome its looks like it eats up alot of time to make though
