This rendition (imho) is comparable in beauty to the rendition by the famous tenor and former treble Peter Schreier. Not many counter-tenors have the quality and smoothness this counter-tenor has and in my opinion his voice is as unique (in a different way) to the first counter-tenor I ever heard way back in the early 60s and that would be Russell Oberlin.
I'm glad for this music. At my age, I still can sing the high notes with falsetto; though I feel it's not falsetto since I don't seem to be faking it.
today there is no castration anymore... okay maybe in india i dunno...but normally they used the head voice or the falsetto.... u can go and ask wiki... but this is definetely possible... e.g. i can sing around 3 octaves... from the E to the f'
It's actually very simple, simply develop the top of the voice at the expense of what is called the "chest voice" that EVERYBODY has. Very high tenors are rare who still retain the lower part of the voice. Notice there is hardly any vibration, actually closer to a white tone that was NOT cultivated over the 400 or so years of 'bel canto'. Castrati still retained the possibility of natural vibration. 'Counter-tenor' in this style is a middle to late 20th century phenomenon.
O my god SO it is a Japanese countertenor singing... I actually HAVE this version im my computer. Someone gave it to me and I was told it is by a Swedish Soprano... Thanks for sharing the knowledge, or else I might not know it forever ;)
I was just thinking that...Mendelssohn would probably turn over in his grave if he heard what has been done with the accompaniment. The vocal line, though, is exactly as written.
He was born in 1971. I just googled his name and found that out. Youtube comments do not allow hyper link so I could not have typed that address for you. Sorry about that.
good singer, awful "remake" (and unecessary)

I'm sorry if I sound ignorant. But does a man need to go through any surgery to have such a voice?
Livisfunatic 2 years ago
I am sure the answer is "No; people are built differently." You might as well google for a better answer to convince yourself though.

Wendy

They used to, 200 years ago - castration.
Nowadays, like c1wang says, it's a matter of limits set by inborn factors and external ones, like vocal training.

@Livisfunatic falsetto is an approach, not really anything biological. You can also falsette.

@Livisfunatic
There used to be a type of singer known as a "castrato." They underwent surgery before a certain age to keep their voices from changing.

Weiß jemand, ob der in Deutschland oder in Japan lebt? Das Deutsch, das der singt, ist ja der Hammer.
Gesang:
Countertenor? - Erstaunlich. Fantastisch. Wundervoll. *Gänsehaut*

The singing is not bad at all--but I daresay Mendelssohn would be horrified by the artificial kitsch transformation of the piano part . . .

Well, this is a Virtuoso performance... no doubt really.

Dear maw066,
The accompaniment sounds like it was done by Ferde Grofe, or worse, Mantovani.
Surprisingly, as you noted, the vocal line was quite faithful to the score.
