But, the composition itself consists of several distinct parts with a unifying theme connecting them. Listen carefully, analyze and you will hear the changes and the motif connecting them. This characteristic is "progressive" metal.

I get what you are saying, but it's not necessarily self-defeating. No where does it say that life gives itself purpose. Instead it says that what it means to be alive is to go find your own reason and be different; to give a second meaning to life. (At least that's how I interpret the lyric.)

Ah I see. Well it seems to me that if the meaning to life is to give it meaning then that is not really the meaning of life since it depends on me to define it. So the meaning is to make meaning yet I define that very meaning, but there was mysteriously meaning before I gave it meaning, which is self defeating lol, See what I'm saying?

What they should say instead is that there is no objective meaning to life, we are just to create meaning in life for ourselves. But that wouldn't be poetic :P

Well I think they could, but it would just be a subjective illusion, not really the meaning of their life. Someone could have the meaning of their life to win the super bowl and retire a millionaire, but that would not really be the meaning of their existence, it's just a subjective illusion. We ultimately run into big questions of God and the reality of "reality" here. I wasn't trying to get into all of that though, I was just pointing out the self defeating proposition.

Because it's made up in ones mind, not mind independent. Meaning in an objective sense presupposes intention, which is the property of a mind. If what exists is not untimately created and grounded by a mind in some way then objective meaning I think is impossibe. That doesn't mean someone couldn't deside to make the purpose of their life to bring honor to their family but it would be purely subjective in their mind not really the meaning of their existence in the objective sense.
