Knopfler's a great guitarist but you don't need to use a sensationalistic headline "best guitarist ever." Let the music stand on it's own. Don't resort to making pretensions about it.

I was 8yrs old, Mum told me dad was working late at a stadium in London because he built a stage for some very famous men who were going to be on TV and I could stay up and watch it- It changed my life. Ever since Marks been my hero!- I actually had my 1st child tonight and im so proud-when she's old enough im going to tell her about a Fantastic band Grandad once helped out and that her Daddy rhinks the World of her!

I think mark is kinda in his own class hes amazing he has his own style and his known for his unique finger picking. I think eric clapton and jimmi hendrix are the best just because the time they played guitar it took such talent to learn and devotion they didn't have an internet with tabs they could go look up every song! they also kinda made soloing famous!
Clapton and Knopfler are the two greatest guitarists of all time, imo...I grew up listening to these guys, and I just turned 21 a few months ago....I'm so glad that my parents had good taste in music
i grew up listening to MK as my dad played dire straits constantly- now im a bigger fan of MK than he is! his music has been the soundtrack of my life... can't get enough of it- this is REAL music- not the X Factor s*it - this music really gets to your soul... MK is one helluva talented guy.. he was born to hold that guitar and make it sing. Long live MK so he can continue to make incredible sounds! :)
I'm 14 years old and I have gone to concerts of him 3 times. The first times I was 11 or 12 years old. The last time we stood in the front and we could see him so well. It was just great!
Mark can do it all country rock blues, and certainly in the class with Eric Clapton, if not with Chet Atkins,etc. I really dont know anyone better at what he does and he does it well.
Eric was only playing rhythm for MK, as Mark's brother David just hade twin girls the night before this series of concerts was to begin. It is explained right before this song on my DVD. On Clapton DVDs, Mark often backed up Clapton. EC was with Dire Straights for nearly a year, mostly in the studio. Friends!
Mark did quite a bit of work with Chet Atkins. Chet had a phrase and a certification which I believe became patented. "Certified Guitar Picker" ... I think he bestowed the title on two players other than himself, Mark being one of the recipients. Anyone have any knowledge of this please post referencing info, THANXr
Clapton was actually worried about Knopfler replacing him as a guitar hero. But then again, Clapton was paranoid and very modest about his skills. I haven't always liked what he released, but I cannot deny that EC is and will always be one of the finest players to ever walk the planet.

totally agree... this music had absolutely nothing to do with looks... you just need to look at MK's music videos to realise that despite the totally naff videos, the music was so amazing that it didnt even matter... this is something aspiring artists today need to realise! :)
@kermage well, those were the golden ages of music but we have loads of great bands, Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of The Stone Age, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and so many others. Everyone's free to hear what they enjoy. I prefer Rock n' Roll as well. Guess we're few of the lucky ones :)

Mark did quite a bit of work with Chet Atkins. Chet had a phrase and a certification which I believe became patented. "Certified Guitar Picker" ... I think he bestowed the title on two players other than himself, Mark being one of the recipients. Anyone have any knowledge of this please post referencing info, THANXr

Clapton was actually worried about Knopfler replacing him as a guitar hero. But then again, Clapton was paranoid and very modest about his skills. I haven't always liked what he released, but I cannot deny that EC is and will always be one of the finest players to ever walk the planet.

In French class some days ago, we were reading a text that had a Mark Knopfler reference, and all my class was all like "Who the heck is that guy?".
The teacher started asking if someone knew him and I was the only one who raised the hand...

@BlastHardRock I'm with ya all the way on this. This world has become a shame and music has become anything but a talent. We will never see the likes of truly talented rock musicians like this again. I was fortunate enough to be a teenager when this came out.

totally agree... this music had absolutely nothing to do with looks... you just need to look at MK's music videos to realise that despite the totally naff videos, the music was so amazing that it didnt even matter... this is something aspiring artists today need to realise! :)

@kermage well, those were the golden ages of music but we have loads of great bands, Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of The Stone Age, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and so many others. Everyone's free to hear what they enjoy. I prefer Rock n' Roll as well. Guess we're few of the lucky ones :)

@TimMer1981 they're all good musicians in different aspects. although Mark is THE man, Red Hot has Flea for example. Crazy bass player. I prefer Dire Straits but i can also see talent in other bands.
