*biggest effin' sigh* look at gregg.. and LISTEN to dave.. wailing.. and beautiful warren..and those soulful, lithe fingers.. thank you, thank you for this.
From the first time I heard this on Eat a Peach (I guess I was in tenth grade), I was moved by the beautiful and profound simplicity of Allman's music and lyrics. Only song played at Duane Allman's funeral.
he wrote it about duanes motorcycle he died on, i believe. but yeah i agree top 5 in my mind. i love dave but greg should be the only one singing this song
It was written in 1967, long before Duane's motorcycle crash in 1971. The name comes from a little girl Gregg saw running in a grocery store. The girl's mother was chasing her, yelling, "Melissa! Melissa!" Gregg thought it was a beautiful name. However, of the songs written by Gregg, it was Duane's favorite.
the lick at the end is a style that warren learned from dickey. he's my favorite lead guitarist now and probably always be. warren will keep that alive
I agree, from whence Greg came - "spendin' most of my life downtown..." he could be dead. He sounds (almost) as good as any singer his age especially given the path he took getting there.
Greg, Dave, Warren are awesome on this version of Melissa. Really pays homage to the Duane. I have to disagree with those that think Greg's voice has diminished. I saw this clip on HDNET and Greg's voice has never sounded better and he looks great! He lost a lot of weight and quit smoking, got healthy. The voice change is due this. His voice is much more crisp and precise but still maintains the Allman soul. Dave brings so much to this song with his harmonies. Terrific lead G. Peace Brothers.
I have been lucky enough to see some amazing players duet before. Townshend-Vedder, Jerry and Dylan, both Clapton and Robert Cray with the Stones, etc... But this is one I would have loved to have seen. Both Dave's and Greg's voices were far from their top form, but who cares. On a song this wonderful and the amazing playing of Warren to boot, this had to be a very special moment for everyone there. This has to be one of the prettiest rock and roll tunes ever recorded.
Ahhhh I Saw This In Piedmont!!! I Almost Died... But Honestly Haynes Makes It That Much Better... But Yea I Love This Song... And I Don't Know What It Is But Daves Voice On Duet Songs Like This Is Amazing... Like On Cortez...
Warren Haynes is probably the best damn guitarist playing these days---Gregg's vocal started out weak but got somewhat better--- Too bad he doesn't have the voice he had 30 years ago.
Yes, Gregg Allman's voice sounds remarcably unstable, thin and brittle compared to these early days when he was an outstanding vocalist (see his first versions of "Dreams" and so..). But still no lack of feeling.
Warren Haynes has learnt a lot from Dickey Betts, no fooling. He keeps things staying alive.
I think the title should be Allman Brothers with Dave Matthews, not the other way around. Still an amazing, brilliant performance. Respect.

yeah, i've definitely picked up some licks from dickey too. especially blues licks played in a major key - like the ones in this song in E major.
