I usually have a lot of tracks on my beats in my daw, but I'm willing to buy this to work on my music on the fly and to make cool sounds on it.. So my question is:
Can you make lets say 4 tracks with different drumsounds of 8 / 16 bars so you can put different effects and then compress it on the main out and then record the main out to a new track? This so I can keep building on a beat with many tracks. But I want to combine a bunch of compression and effects thats why I need to know. thanks/D
I couldn't buy anything from a company called 'Teenage' Engineering. It creates the sense that their gear is blemished, takes ages to boot up and is prone to going totally haywire for no fathomable reason!
To think this is anything more than a fun little thing to play with at the price of something like a Maschine and Komplete 8 or just Komplete 8 Ultimate is ridiculous.
Teenage engineering: overpriced and with a face that only a mom can love. Geez, you can even buy a Dave Smith Synth with 800 bucks! What would buy instead?
@MrMastrsushi I think analogic sound is much better of any virtual algorithm, anyway i agree with you but i think if we want to talk about decent sequencers we can talk of everything except fruity loops.
@w4ve Ehh. I prefer FL Studio over any other DAW, and I create jazz and orchestral music. Really, I definitely prefer FL Studio's workflow over Cubase's, Sonar's, Presonus Studio or any other DAW.
It's like he said do you need it to make better music ? probably not, there is stuff out there that is the same price and way better. Would you want it? Hell yes, it looks class and it seems to produce the electronic sound I like. the melody to the song one - swedish house mafia is class and it's made with this small thing so that says it all. A pity it's so expensive i would defo buy it, if it was around 400 euro.
Definitely 'luxury.' I get the product and its aesthetic, but unfinished machines sold with promises of features, especially with internal sealed batteries make me wary at any price point. Let alone $850. I'll take Elektron's or dsi's instruments over that any day.
@BreakmasterQually people keep saying "tape recorder"! no one actually mentioned. i thought they could have fit a tape in there somewhere, would be kinda cool.
@projectptube yeah, there's another "toy" in a silver plastic box made by some Japanese company back in the 80s or so - at one point almost given away because they couldn't get rid of 'm. It's got even worse specifications - a single note and it doesn't sound like a bass guitar at all. I wonder what became of it.
i just cant think about it as a serious tool i need.. this is more about how it sounds then the price... (tenori-on gave me that lesson allready... ) there are so many cheap good and expensive hell good synthesizers on the market right now... no midi clock connection is a crime for this devise i have to say... i will take one in my hands and check what i can let this thing do... another question: how about using it as a sampler for live such as an looper? is it possible?
@markboombastik Tenori has a highly unique and truly intuitive, usable interface - while this OP-1 also looks great as an art object, it seems like "too many functions with too few controls".. Both are priced higher than you'd wish! But this is because they are not mainstream items. I might change my opinion after playing with an OP-1? But it looks like Ableton Live and any keyboard can produce these functions more easily.
@VJFranzK tenori-on is now 240 euros in the shops... (plastic version) this is what it worth at the end... i know you love it from your videos... i think the tenori-on is too limited for what they sold it back in the days.... and sadwise yamaha seemed never listen to their customers with the updates... who cares ... i have it and i play with it sometimes... do you have an op-1? can you answer my question? or do you just want to say again "tenori is super?"
@markboombastik I am open minded, and would of course like to try an OP-1. I don't think that will get to happen at any shop I frequent. I could not justify spending that money un-tried, as the user interface just looks too obtuse for my taste. I might not have bought a Tenori on if I had known that the TNR-i app would be available a year or so later. ( The app is NEARLY as good, though the real buttons and lights really are better. )

Great review but it's hard to see anyone rushing to the shops to buy this at that price. It seems a bit gimicky rather than a serious approach to creating a portable synth.
The makers of this are laughing at those who buy it.
I genuinely thought this thing was going to be less than 125
Sure its a nice interface, but essentially this is a toy. A couple of FREE VST's in your daw will blow this away.
Military grade buttons and a decent build quality do not justify this price by any stretch of the imagination. Give me a machinedrum or anything else from Elektron over this any day. Or a Moog phatty, Dave Smith etc
I can think of loads of stand alone hardware that will allow you to make a finished tune much better than the teenage. MPC (any of them) for example. Tell you what, go see if you can make an album like DJ Shadows debut 'Entroducing' on the OP1. No chance. Yet Shadow created the album using a couple of MPC60s (nothing else!). Keep in mind the OP1 has far more sampling power than an MPC60.
But really there is so much gear out there (hardware) that can do much better than the op1.
Do I need it, No. Do I won't it, No. You got this one right except I think it looks like something from the 70's. Too small to be a real interactive instrument and too expensive to be a toy. I don't get it.
but $799 is too much...but people pay $300 for Beats by Dre headphones...lol. This is perfect for those guys. Your overpriced headphones connected to an overpriced OP-1.
I don't like it for 1 reason, & that's because it takes away any sort of performance quality. The Keys of a Piano are designed perfectly. And they they have been getting smaller over the years. But this is a step too far.
@MomoTheBellyDancer Don't be a Spanner. You know as well as I do that even the BBC Radiophonic Workshop used Piano Keys with their Synthesizers. And they've been used with Modular, Analog, VA & Digital Synthesizers. Not to mention Keyboards, Organs, EPs, & Clavi' Boards. But yeh, You're right. This isn't any of those. It's just a gimmicky Toy, & certainly not worth 700 Euros when you can get a Moog slim Phatty for around the same Price.
@MomoTheBellyDancer I'm Glad you've finally got the idea! A Toy that you can make music on. Although I wouldn't make any outragious predictions as to the quality of the music. It's not exactly a MOOG is it Spanner?!
@MomoTheBellyDancer Ah! You haven't even Gotten past the "Fun" stage yet! lol! That explains it! I Rate Moog over both this & your Akai MPC! Pads are fine. Pads have always been fine. To Hit, Tap, Push & select etc. They aren't trying to replace Keys, but work with them, Like on Roland Fantom machines for example. These things are set out like keys, but way too small to play like you can Keys. And if you're going to just pick at my Quotes, You're going to miss the main point I'm making.. Again!!
"You're going to miss the main point I'm making.. Again!!"
The thing is that it doesn't really matter. Keys, pads, strings, switches: the listener doesn't give a damn what you use. I have a studio full of equipment, but I made the most money using nothing but Reason and a mouse. Go figure.
@MomoTheBellyDancer That's because the Record Labels turned their backs on Artists. And decided to manufacture Music as a product in an industry for Greed of profit. It has nothing to do with the Art of Creation, Innovation, & Expression. Because all the trend-whores, young-dumb & mindless people have been conditioned to buy anything with "New" on it. And I don't care what the listener thinks! I use what ever assists me express. Like Keys!! Carry on Midi-Kid! Make your Beats n Bass for profit!!!
@MomoTheBellyDancer It's not a comfort, no. Knowing that all the musicians I speak to, & support are struggling to keep above the surface, whilst big titted bimbo's are pushed onto the stage with their ass out, to mime, plagerise MJ's moves & take home a massive payment. And they didn't even write the music!
Yet many of the artists out there deserve recognition for their stunning work. Not to be rejected at every corner because it won't appeal to teens, or the track is over 3:30mins long.
Well, some compose the music, some produce it and others perform it. Performing on stage night after night is a rough job, whether you have big tits or not.
In any case, I usually play one of the clumsy big violins with big strings (also called "double bass") which, according to your logic, is not an instrument since it doesn't have any piano keys. It's probably the wrong color, too.
@MomoTheBellyDancer Yes, well there are plenty of other rough jobs they can do. Where as Musicians are naturally suited to writting, composing, producing & performing it all as part of their passion for Music.
The second part of your message doesn't even deserve a reply. And this is where I stop wasting my time on someone who clearly just wants to mock a geniune person who cares about the lives & fate of many struggling artists. Good Day to you sir. I Can't say it's been a pleasure.
"And this is where I stop wasting my time on someone who clearly just wants to mock a geniune person who cares about the lives & fate of many struggling artists. "
Na, I mock you because I think you're being a judgmental, overly purist poser. Every way to make music is fine, and yours isn't better than anybody else's just because you use "real piano keys" or whatever. Thelonious Monk is cool, and so is Kraftwerk. In the end, it's about the soul.
As I saw both in the Video, can you connect the Alesis iO Dock to it? Will that work? As you said in the Alesis Video it only works with a PC. But maybe...
(but actually less looking at this video ... synth engine seems really limited (no filters WTF!) recording also very limited (no piano roll, NO--i suck at playing), etc.)
Definetely worth the price, considering the amount of work these people have done to put these features together, i would expect korg doing smth similar at half the price soon:)
@hawklord2112 Too true - very different beasts. But both so compelling :) I guess I should edit my comment to read - 'Perhaps if I stop buying Eurorack modules For a Little While!' Cant stay away from the EuroCrack too long :)
Considering the build quality, and type of display, this is not as expensive as it could have been. I'd say over all, it a nice deal. This video doesn't and can't do the awesomeness of that display justice. You need to see it in person.
While i like the all-in-1 kinda thing, and that they got a good build-quality, it just doesnt fly!
It's too expensive. Looks like a toy. And built-in speaker, FM radio and several other features point towards them just pushing as many gadgets into 1 as possible, without thinking about usefulness or depth. Which further enforce the toy-perception. Toys like this are built in rubbish plastic and cost 50€ in your local Toys'r'Us - like not this.
Especially the size makes it really great for on-the-go music making, or the perfect instrument in case of limited space. Plus it packs a lot of features for such a small size. Unfortunately the price it not so small. Around 300 euro would make it a must have in my opinion.
Everything's awesome, except for the price. It seems like such a niche product, I can't imagine it selling as well as the VL-Tone (that's for the company to worry about though, not me) simply because they over-did some things which would've reduced cost (the metal, and the military-grade knobs) could've easily been replaced with plastic and cheaper knobs. I'll wait to see what they go for used in a few years.
Great review as always..thing about the OP-1, at the moment, is availability! There's a major supply problem here: just a smattering are being offered on ebay starting at 800 US dollars, but quickly escalating to well over a thousand! I'm wondering if this thing is merely vapourware with a limited engagement.
Would buy this if I wouldn't want to do some serious music.

@therealKINDLE
"It's just a gimmicky Toy"
One that you can make music with. Go figure.
MomoTheBellyDancer 6 months ago
@MomoTheBellyDancer I'm Glad you've finally got the idea! A Toy that you can make music on. Although I wouldn't make any outragious predictions as to the quality of the music. It's not exactly a MOOG is it Spanner?!
Maybe it's all YOU need to make Music! lol
therealKINDLE 6 months ago
@therealKINDLE
"A Toy that you can make music on"
Yes, just like an Akai MPC, for instance. And those things don't even have keys. They have rubber pads.
"It's not exactly a MOOG is it "
So what? There have been many thousands of records made with not a single Moog in sight.
"Maybe it's all YOU need to make Music!"
Maybe I do? Although I'd prefer to record some real bass as well. Because it's fun.
MomoTheBellyDancer 6 months ago
@MomoTheBellyDancer Ah! You haven't even Gotten past the "Fun" stage yet! lol! That explains it! I Rate Moog over both this & your Akai MPC! Pads are fine. Pads have always been fine. To Hit, Tap, Push & select etc. They aren't trying to replace Keys, but work with them, Like on Roland Fantom machines for example. These things are set out like keys, but way too small to play like you can Keys. And if you're going to just pick at my Quotes, You're going to miss the main point I'm making.. Again!!
therealKINDLE 6 months ago
@therealKINDLE
"You're going to miss the main point I'm making.. Again!!"
The thing is that it doesn't really matter. Keys, pads, strings, switches: the listener doesn't give a damn what you use. I have a studio full of equipment, but I made the most money using nothing but Reason and a mouse. Go figure.
MomoTheBellyDancer 6 months ago
@MomoTheBellyDancer That's because the Record Labels turned their backs on Artists. And decided to manufacture Music as a product in an industry for Greed of profit. It has nothing to do with the Art of Creation, Innovation, & Expression. Because all the trend-whores, young-dumb & mindless people have been conditioned to buy anything with "New" on it. And I don't care what the listener thinks! I use what ever assists me express. Like Keys!! Carry on Midi-Kid! Make your Beats n Bass for profit!!!

@therealKINDLE
"That's because the Record Labels turned their backs on Artists."
If it's any comfort: I also play jazz.
"And I don't care what the listener thinks! I use what ever assists me express. Like Keys!!"
And other people use strings. Or pads. Or drums. And sometimes they even sing!
MomoTheBellyDancer 6 months ago
@MomoTheBellyDancer It's not a comfort, no. Knowing that all the musicians I speak to, & support are struggling to keep above the surface, whilst big titted bimbo's are pushed onto the stage with their ass out, to mime, plagerise MJ's moves & take home a massive payment. And they didn't even write the music!
Yet many of the artists out there deserve recognition for their stunning work. Not to be rejected at every corner because it won't appeal to teens, or the track is over 3:30mins long.
therealKINDLE 6 months ago
@therealKINDLE
"And they didn't even write the music!"
MomoTheBellyDancer 6 months ago

Thanks nick.
As I saw both in the Video, can you connect the Alesis iO Dock to it? Will that work? As you said in the Alesis Video it only works with a PC. But maybe...
GPSchnyder 6 months ago
so no tempo sync huh? Guess there's ways around that...
djugel 6 months ago
love the conclusion ... HELL YAH I WANT ONE TOO
(but actually less looking at this video ... synth engine seems really limited (no filters WTF!) recording also very limited (no piano roll, NO--i suck at playing), etc.)
sad, wanted to love it :(

Definetely worth the price, considering the amount of work these people have done to put these features together, i would expect korg doing smth similar at half the price soon:)

Thank you for the review Nick! Been waiting for your take on this little monster!
It really looks like a good companion for the Tenori-On! Perhaps if I stop buying Eurorack modules and save, Santa might be good to me :)
Thanks Nick!
mCKENIC 6 months ago
@mCKENIC €800 worth of Eurorack wont do what this will.... but then again this wont do what €800 worth of eurorack would do.
(especially PhonoGene and all of Intellijel's new releases...)
hawklord2112 6 months ago
@hawklord2112 Too true - very different beasts. But both so compelling :) I guess I should edit my comment to read - 'Perhaps if I stop buying Eurorack modules For a Little While!' Cant stay away from the EuroCrack too long :)

I understand that backing up the unit was essential because the unit has no factory restore capability.
NickDrake101 6 months ago
@NickDrake101 That was beta. The unit can now be restored fully by holding the COM button and selecting restore.

Considering the build quality, and type of display, this is not as expensive as it could have been. I'd say over all, it a nice deal. This video doesn't and can't do the awesomeness of that display justice. You need to see it in person.

It looks fun, but for that price you can get a decent laptop. I can see this being a big hit for trust- fund hipsters.

Would you say that it is possible to work with it as stand alone production device(record and mix all things with the OP-1)?
RobotAndTheDEAMON 6 months ago
this is just....so cool
TherapyHiccup 6 months ago
This is has to be THE deranged kit of the year.
MarctheDarc 6 months ago
Very cool.., but DAMN it's expensive! Are their production costs really that high for this street price?
squeakD 6 months ago
