these things seem important when you're young. when i was young i got pissed off that radio wasn't playing clash and elvis costello but now i see that it doesn't matter and one day you will laugh at radiohead v pavement comments
two moronic comments: one being that "radiohead sounds like pavement"
two: that radiohead sucks
they're completely different bands. radiohead is legendary and yes, they get a hell of a lot more recognition. and you know what? deservedly so. they successfully reinvent themselves in every album.
I just searched and listened to the bands that have been mentioned in the top comment. Bands that I'm not aware of and even though they're all from the 90' - that's where the similarties end. Pavement sounds years ahead of their time, years ahead of any band mentioned in the top comment. I'd go as far as saying they're as good as Nirvana, they just never got what deserved. Point is Pavement are much more than the run of the mill 90's band. They're gold.
this was a band that started the popularization of lo-fi. huge innovators.
and don't dare try to tell me that they are part of the alternative boom because they only had ONE song with any substantial radio play. they really were an INDIE alternative band, albeit a popular one. they aren't part of any boom, so shut your goddamn pretentious mouths or unwrap them from whatever phallic object you can't seem to pull out.
I'm sorry, I just don't really understand why this album is so acclaimed by everyone with ears. It's a good album, no doubt, a nice mixture of lo-fi, grungy instrumentation with pop melodies and oddball lyrics, but it sounds like what a lot of early to mid 90's alt rock sounded like. What was so special about this album? Maybe I had to be there at the time; it did come out before I was born. Can somebody explain this to me?
@coooliox27 Maybe you did have to be there. This and many other fine bands emerged from a time when the term alternative wasn't the name of a genre, and this music was a far more drastic contrast to what they were supposed to be an alternative to. This album in particular has found a special place in the memory of those alive during that era simply due to it's purity. Just enough production to not sound like shit, but not one iota more.
@crohns4life i'll listen to more shins, sorta wrote them off as old school wanna bes but that's unfair without a naked listen. love pinkerton, and understand the comments others made on loveless but it's still top 5 to me. neutral milk hotel is far and away the first, should start numbering at 6 after NMH.
If ya'll haven't checked out "Portugal. The Man.,' give 'er a listen, start with Censored Colors & let me know what you think!
@platinumluigi They didn't get much mainstream (radio) air play, but when around the time pavement was big in the indie scene, I was around 18-19, and they got a lot of airplay on indie stations, college radio and that sort of thing.
So yeah i'd say they were popular, just depends who you asked ;-)
@platinumluigi your reading list might not include much that gets radio play, outside of nirvana, early weezer and most of jack white's stuff...but here you go:
1. Neutral Milk Hotel: In An Aeroplane Over the Sea
@mnhoops i'll never understand why people are so into loveless.. honestly my least favorite MBV album due to lack of drums.. compare the drumming in most of the EPs or isn't anything to loveless. renders loveless relatively unlistenable to me. PAVEMENT's the BEST seeing them tuesday in Austin!!! twice in one year!!
@adartmo Because Loveless isn't about drums at all. It's about the guitars. In fact, even if you completely remove the drum tracks from that album it'd still be just as listenable.
Underground--or "indie rock" as it was called in those days--was blooming in the 90s. Bands like Brian Jonestown Massacre, Hum (perhaps the most underrated ever), Pavement, Slint (noisier and weirder than all), Flaming Lips, Guided By Voices. Check out the 90s UK shoegaze/dreampop or britpop bands like MBV, Ride, Slowdive (a personal fav), Swervedriver (any Creation bands, really), Pulp. Others: The Wedding Present, Nada Surf, Super Furry Animals, Spacemen 3/Spiritualized, Low, Sparklehorse.
@Underchiever007 My Bloody Valentine?!? =] i found most of my rarities on amazon.strawberry wine was like 30$ but its impossible to find in that condition so well worth it
Only good thing I tunes did for me was show me this band, on the LISTENERS WHO BOUGHT THIS ALSO BOUGHT: Pavement. Thanks I tunes i will listen to the full song on here for free.
yeah im 20 and felt that for the past years man. but music like pavement is still shaking up the underground universities. in most towns. or it is so in england!
Living between Baltimore and D.C., and being 17... shit sucks. Pavement is older than me, and the explosion of awesome music that happened in the 90's just isn't appreciated by my generation. I feel sooo alooooooooone

I agree, what that guy said about radiohead was stupid, but pablo honey was actually released in early 1993, and recorded the same year slanted and enchanted was released
i don't see how that makes any difference - unless pavement got their paws on an advance copy just after it was recorded then it still can't be a rip off
no I totally understand what your saying. I wasn't at all implying that they ripped off radiohead, that wouldn't make sense at all. I was really just being nitpicky about your previous comment, when you said it was released 2 years before radiohead released an album. Sorry about being nitpicky, just wanted to correct what you said.

@deadphish09 ....if he insulted radiohead then he was right....radiohead is one of the worst bands in the history of the world.....their style is to sing in a constantly sing in a whiny voice or a falsetto voice.....they try to be like the pixies with their lyrics....but radiohead isnt remotely close to the pixies....thom yorke has said so himself

@americathesn Ouch, as a grunge fan myself, I I'm slightly insulted by that generalisation. I love prog and art rock; and Selling England By the Pound is one of the greats of both. That doesn't mean I don't think Ten is still a great album.
@movieman2007 LOL its up to 50,000 now hehe, but i know what u mean, as if no one else knows of them... but this band has gotten alot of fame and fans recently

okay i just found out that pavement's name could have come from bob dylan's subterranean homesick blues song. in that case.... pavement totally rocks.

okay what's the best damn song of the decade? what kind of name is pavement. maybe that's why they aren't as big as miley cyrus. sucky band name, you have to admit.

I was called a "hipster" for simply having this album in my vehicle.
That term didn't exist in 1992 when this album was produced.
People are so quick to judge and label things unfamiliar to them.
