I am from NYC and I Say The FDR is quite nice when traffic is at a minimum at dusk which is rare...But LSD is prettier in my humble opinion ...They feel just about the same driving wise though....BIG THANX JIM
This video is proof that not all freeways (even if parts of LSD are only expressway-grade) need to be super wide, modern or built to NASCAR speeds to be enjoyable. Truth is, LSD is one of the GREAT American roadways, and it's been filmed by *THE* King of freeway videographers.
Perhaps the best skyline views along any roadway in America, along with the picturesque Lake Michigan shoreline, always within sight. Even better when there's a full moon out
Thanks, Always perfect. This video makes me remember of my only stay in chicago as exhibitor at Mc Cormick place in 1993!
For a french citizen , I have impressed by the power of US worker unions there. Behaviors of worker unions that would never happen in Europe despite Europe may be known for some union power - but really peanuts compared to Mc Cormick union power.!
Picking my all-time favorite urban road in the U.S. between FDR and LSD is a tough call. FDR is an blistering rollercoaster ride, and LSD is a gentle merry-go-round.
Fantastic video as usual, can't wait for the next one.
Nice video, Jim. LSD reminds of a broader, longer Freedom Parkway (S.R. 10). Very nice expressway. I wished Tara Boulevard (U.S. 19/41/S.R. 3) was built this way; in its (19/41) current form, there are far too many traffic lights and drive way access.
I loved this video! Chicago is inexorably synonymous with a lot of unique aspects of pop culture and American history. It would be very hard to imagine the United States without any of its superb and modern urbanized paradises. This country is known for its infrastructure. Your video of LSD at dusk really captured the nightlife of Chicago just as it's beginning to cheerfully get up on its feet.
Great work on the video Jim. The lighting is perfect. Interesting photo of the old S curve. From an engineering perspective that looks just plain retarded.
@jcrockett001 Yes, Prior to November of 1996, Soldier Field was in the median of LSD. The current section of LSD around Soldier Field features southbound and northbound lanes running west of Soldier Field; prior to the 1996 reconstruction, the northbound lanes of LSD ran east of Soldier Field while the southbound lanes ran west of Soldier field.
I've been watching the Weather Channel all weekend, and I did a double take when I heard the music in this video. haha just kidding with you, Jim, super video! 6:35 to 6:45 was my favorite part with the wall of towers on the right. If I'm not mistaken, I think Oprah used to live in one of those? Random fact: seeing the John Hancock Tower in this reminded me that there is an out of this world Sunday brunch buffet that takes place on the 95th floor. The BEST meal you will ever eat in your life!
Love ur video...i visited chi-town last year, its so big.. didnt have the time to see all the sites but I loved every moment in chicago....before I use to love philly but chicago has takeing its place.
Nice vid. Where exactly did you hear that LSD was signed as I-494? I looked up LSD and I-494 really quick, and I didn't find that LSD was ever an interstate (the traffic lights certainly wouldn't make the standard), and I-494 was just a proposal in another part of town... then again, I probably give Wikipedia too much credit.
Oh, and I personally haven't ever heard anybody calling Lake Shore Drive "LSD"--they're the same amount of syllables, anyway--but I definately don't know everyone.
@RianAlive It's signed as I-494 in the 1960 Rand McNally Road Atlas on the southern part only roughly from I-55 South to 49th Street. I've heard it referred to that by other people in discussions, plus I need to save pace in the comment boxes where I can.
@1867Phoenix They are both older highways along the edges of the cities' shoreline. I have heard them compared in several discussions and in print regarding early highways.
OH WOW! Watching this makes me a little home sick.

The ones in the dusk have the best music selection, in my opinion. Lake Shore Drive sure is a beautiful ride, I hope I'll be able to go there someday.

(Part 2 of 2)... when the waters of Lake Michigan reflect the moonlight to offer a complementary effect, with the Chicago skyline on the other side.
Great music, too. This video should be shared with the Chicago media outlets, as well as the local visitor's bureau. Favorited!

Interesting I have never heard of Lake Shore Drive being compared to FDR Drive.
I have always thought they were simular, I did know that so many thought so too.
Can you name an example where the two roads were compared?

@Freewayjim You could make a case that Lake Shore is comparable to NYC's West side Highway as well, which is more of a boulevard these days.
