How, what or who was Karzai before being president is irrelevant in connection to my original comment above. Saikal may be an academic? But totaly unaware of the reality in the ground in Afghanistan and this region today. Karzai has done a wonderful job, continues to do so. Afghanistan needs the political, economical and military backing of the US the most, not to mention Nato. However, his offer of protection to OMAR was his doing alone, not washingtons as a speculative prof Saikal suggests
You are sleeping in the ear of elephant. Karzai is not the representative of Afghan people , he was brought to power by the USA and the election was just a show. he just represent the warlords the mafia (northernalliance) he has done zero for the community and country. he brought anarchi like communist leaders babrak and najibula, they were unaware of their traditions and were puppets so do karzai.
This Prof Saikal is barking mad, Karzai and the taliban are one and are all Afghans they are runnign Afghanistan, peace or war and thye are using the foreign forces to slowly bring stabi;lity.
This is my uncle ok! and he is just stating the ovious!

I am totally blown away (no pun intended) by ur belief that Karzai has done a good job.
A 'good job' for who btw? The Afghan people or the U.S.?
And what world is it where your past and your past connections (and allegiances) would not be relevant?
You say: "Afghanistan needs the political, economic and military backing of the US the most..."
Well just who the hell are the US fighting? Russians?
What does 'Democratic' mean 2 u?
Proped up US puppets?
Whole county takeovers?
Destabilisation?

ZIVONZivon, Professor Amin Saikal is as far away from barking mad, as I am to being swayed by your argument.
Do you know who Hamid Karzai worked for, before he was President? Do you know the story of how he became 'President'?
Find out and get back to me.
