@MadJack2007 i agree man, and newman-haas was the best especially when texaco and kmart were like the main sponsors, and the black and white scheme was to die for!!!
At 5:20, watch Michael Andretti fly. I was across the pits in the grand stands and saw this accident live! It was awesome. All 90K+ people and I jumped up to see the car go up in the air. Man, I miss the good old days of American open-wheel racing. I will never go to an IRL event, EVER (are you reading this Tony G)?
Everyone these days complains that street circuits like Surfer's and Belle Isle are too small for the cars but I'd argue the cars are too underpowered for the courses. Look at this race and the races at "small" courses like Mid-Ohio and Belle during the CART's hayday - they were great! What the cars need these days are less downforce and more HP and mainly torque for the road courses and it'll be exciting again. Small courses please...more like crappy engine/chassis combination.
Actually these are Ground Effect cars with a lot of power, and ton of aero grip. There was nothing wrong with the Panoz chassis either. This is where IRL needs to go back to the future, excellent power, chassis choice and a tire warfare. This is what made the series great. Only TG didn't like it when fewer and fewer Americans were in the series and too many ovals. Nonsense, this year's balance is just right.
I think it was great. I grew up with CART from 98 all the way til Champ Car merged (more like ceased) in 08. I was only 2 years old during this race, but I enjoy watching old CART and F1 races. CART changed forever once penske left for the IRL in '02, then followed by all the other big teams and sponsors the following year. Thats why Newman/Haas/Lanigan racing is my favorite team now. They stayed with the REAL indycar series.
have this at home actually all of the first three races of 1991 on one tape (surfers, long beach and phoenix) Unser was unstoppable at Long Beach during that time
Forgot about that pit wreck, that could have been horrible. Always sad to see Scott Brayton as well. Love those old NHR Kmart pit uniforms though. Thanks CD55
Strange to see that right-hand turn so early on East Seaside Way (the backstretch). Also a big-time throwback to see Bobby Rahal driving a car NOT sponsored by Miller Brewing.
@pedro7g I agree, classics will never age

Not only were the cars better looking at this time, but I enjoy the older paint schemes more too, lol.

Wow Michael caught some serios air! Does anyone know who drive the miller car since Rahal was in the STP?

Danny Sullivan drove the Miller car with Alfa-Romeo power. Never really worked out for Alfa in CART.

what a fabulous driver al unser jr was. He would've been a far better choice for f1 in the early 90's. He was mega talented on any track.

I still think CART was an awesome series even after the split. I think the last great CART season was 2001 imo.

Perhaps, but it just wasn't the same. . .
Though Alex Zanardi did indeed put on a helluva show with some his burns from the stern and his infamous "Pass" at Laguna Seca. . .
