Don't forget this Man Utd side were no mugs - they finished 2nd that year just 2 points behind title winners Liverpool. Ipswich's style of play was just amazing, the dutch boys were the final bit of the jigsaw that saw that side become truely world class. Quite simply the best team never to have won the title.
The good old days alright, I wasn't born yet back then. But back then every club had a chance of winning international cups. Now it's only the rich clubs, money has ruined football. It's not about the game anymore, it's about the business.
wow I remember the game well. It was surreal, I used to worship Gary Bailey. Ipswich were the daddies back then, I went to their ground and met the players as a kid with my team. Used to love wearing my Utd away kit back in the good ole 70's......nostalgic stuff.
Amazing match, and if I saw it right, the Man U keeper saved no less than three penalties!! God, football was so much more fascinating n those years...
This was a brilliant Ipswich Town team and I always enjoyed watching them play, maybe not so much in this game, as I'm a Man Utd fan. Beating them 9-0 in later years has obviously no bearing on this team, so it's hardly revenge. Instead, it was proof we had an amazing Management team who might give us some success in the future. The amount of that success proved to be immense but ,on that one special day, Ipswich Town and their fans lived it BIG. Let them enjoy the memory.
I remember this game and this was probably the best Ipswich team I've known in my 44 years but you had Sir Bobby as manager at the time. :) Despite conceding 6 goals Gary Bailey played a blinder.
ITFC the all time classic football team, ups and downs, proper passing game, true fans, great town where ALL the locals support the tractor boys. Would be great to see them back in the prem. Come on keano! ps funny how no man utd fans recall this result!
I´m from mallorca and I start following british footie cauze Ipswich Town.Cooper,Mills
Osman Butcher McCall,Wark Thijssen Mürhen,Brazil Mariner Gates.(Robson the manager)Small teams put the charm. And what a ns adidas shirt, and the red & white mitre ball...those were years.
What is even more amazing about this game, is that United were neck and neck with Liverpool at the top of the table for the title - and this was March !!! Tony
United had a good side that year as well, we only lost the title on the last day of the season to shitty Liverpool. One of those days for Ipswich when everything went right...
What lost United the title that season though was losing home games to the likes of Wolves - a horrible match, at least Ipsich were a good side then.
Bloody hell, yeah. That Wolves match; Sexton's tactics; not playing Andy Ritchie; Jimmy Greenhoff's injury. If the Doc hadn't have been sacked, we've have won the title in 1980 and 1981.
amazing to think of the score could have been higher if the penalities had been scored. I remember being at Old Traford when Dundee Utd managed a 2-2 draw in the Uefa Cup.
Tragically, yes. Tactical errors and some incredible mistakes cost us - both that day, and the title. Still pride in Bailey's three pen saves, However. And it made the 9-0 in 1995 sweeter. :)

Despite the penalty saves, Bailey was terrible for the other goals. It was a great Ipswich team though

I was at this game - it was raining coins from the United thugs in the corner of the North Stand where the away fans used to stand,

How many points would Gary Bailey have got in Fantasy League? Despite conceding six goals he did save those penalties and saved quite a few shots.

Ipswich were a far, far greater team than Man Utd in the seventies and early 80's.
Neither were as good as Aston Villa, mind.

Arnold Muhren was absolutely sensational that day. Bobby Robson - England's best manager since Ramsey.
