For me, the big problem with 1969 is that I can't stand two of the four winners - the British song was trite and the Dutch one dreary (in my opinion). Spain, for me, was OK, but not a winner. Thank goodness for France, ensuring at least one great song took the top honours. But for me, even the French song pales in comparison with the simply towering Italian entry, whose poor result was nothing short of scandalous. Elsewhere, fun songs from Sweden, Switzerland and Ireland kept the standard up.
from France : 1 pt to Switzerland 2 pts to Norway 3 pts to Sweden 4 pts to Luxembourg 5 pts to Finland 6 pts to the United Kingdom 7 pts to the Netherlands 8 pts to Germany 10 pts to Spain and 12 pts to Monaco !
Surely a clip about this contest should focus on the voting? otherwise its a waste of space and time... a clip created by somebody who clearly doesn't understand Eurovision.
And here is my German vote: 1 to Norway (Yugoslavia) 2 to Sweden (Norway) 3 to Netherlands (Sweden) 4 to Switzerland (Netherlands) 5 to United Kingdom (Switzerland) 6 to Spain(UK) 7 to Monaco (Spain) 8 to Germany (Monaco) 10 to Portugal 12 to Finland
I know that the voting is over, but here are the Brazilian votes, anyway: 1p: Finland 2p: Switzerland 3p: Netherlands 4p: Spain 5p: Ireland 6p: Germany 7p: Italy 8p: Portugal 10p: France 12p: UK
It looks like it. You surely must have had a case of the 'embittered minus-givers' yourself, to positive comments. A rather lousy way to channel your frustration, if you ask me.
If the actual voting for 1969 resulted in an unprecedented 4-way tie, there was no such ambiguity in our own poll - Frida's soul-shattering performance was a comfortable leader from early on, thus giving France their 3rd win in our polls. Also worth mentioning: Italy and Portugal's highly successful scorings, which seem like a compensation for their undeservedly low ranking back then.
That's it, folks - voting's closed! Here are the final, official results of the 1969 vote - the top-10... 1) France 255 2) Netherlands 187 3) Switzerland 176 4) UK 162 5) Italy 141 6) Spain 130 7) Germany 118 8) Monaco 112 9) Portugal 105 10) Sweden 84
votes from ireland... Finland 1pt Monaco 2pts Ireland 3pts Italy 4pts Luxembourg 5pts Netherlands 6pts Switzerland 7pts Spain 8pts UK 10pts and France 12 pts
A little late on the case, I admit, but here are my eccentric (as usual) votes: 1-Germany 2-Netherlands 3-Italy 4-Portugal 5-France (Edith Piaf has a twin sister!) 6-Finland 7-Norway (love the chorus) 8-UK (I have to admit that this is my favourite of the winners) 10-Monaco (amazing song and an amazing performance from such a young performer) And Switzerland, 12 points (I just love it)
Yes, that was an eccentric vote of yours if I've ever seen one - giving higher marks to Finland than Netherlands or France?! (two of my all-time favorites, btw) This is just crrraaazyyy!! :-D Can't disagree on your 12p though - a fabulous song indeed.
My taste has changed in these... 10 months, was it? Were I voting again now, it would look more like this: 1-Spain (ok song, great performance) 2-Italy 3-Sweden 4-Norway 5-UK 6-Finland 7-Monaco 8-Switzerland 10-Germany And France, 12 points - I now find it absolutely amazing Hope that makes you happy.
Whatever you say in sincerity pleases me. Anyone who appreciates Frida Boccara & Un Jour Un Enfant - the most amazing song I've ever heard - well, I'm happy to share the that experience. I hope you're enjoying a lovely festive season & that 2009 will be a great year & looking forward to more 'musings'.
Latest update: 1) France 238 2) Netherlands 179 3) Switzerland 157 4) UK 144 5) Italy 134 6) Spain 122 7) Germany 117 8) Portugal 101 9) Monaco 100 10) Sweden 84 Last place: still Luxembourg, with 12 points Only 8 days left to vote before the closing dat of February 27. Post your favorites today!
So, counting only the votes of geotrisi and Bibbierklam, here's the current top-10 - which shows Italy climbing into the top-5 for the first time: 1) France 226 2) Netherlands 169 3) Switzerland 157 4) UK 143 5) Italy 126 6) Spain 120 7) Germany 117 8) Portugal 95 9) Monaco 93 10) Sweden 79
I'm starting to suspect that some people log in under different usernames so they can vote multiple times - I'm specifically referring to users cheriesc, naughtypython, and fullstopper, all of whose accounts were suspiciously created in the past 2 days. As a result (and until I have proof to the contrary), I'm not going to count these votes. And, people, PLEASE STOP DOING THIS!!!
Absolutely incredible - you allow (for example) 1000 Greeks to vote for Greece 12pts & think this is okay when (say for argument sake) 10 UK votes for UK (12PTS) & you think thats fair OR okay. But if you think someone has a double vote you think its digusting? I think maybe you need a logic re-think. If you allow people to vote for their own country, if you allow thousands to vote from one country then u allow duplicate accounts - ITS CALLED A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD
Wow, wow there, hold your horses, my friend! First of all, I kind of agree with you and Lewis that these votings meant nothing - well, not exactly nothing, but it wasn't much more than a game and, most of all, a starting point for comparing tastes and discussing older contests (on the other hand, if YOU think they mean nothing, why are you getting so worked up over them?) Second, since I allowed people to vote for their own country, I couldn't pose a restriction on how many could vote (cont'd)
(though I don't think there were "thousands" that voted for Greece or any country!) And there were some glaring cases of duplicate accounts I just couldn't let pass - the same goes for sudden influxes of votes for an entry, eg. Turkey '80. Yes, I know the results were not perfect (though they more or less represent the fans' tastes, IMO) but, hey, I'm just one man, and I tried my best to keep a minimum amount of integrity. If you think I didn't make it, well, there's nothing I can do about it.
Dearest T, all I can say is commisertions after the onslaught here. I fear that some on the neighbouring island have taken to the Chistmas sherry a little too soon! (LOL!) IMO Due Grosse Lacrime Bianche ranks with Non Ho L'Eta & Al Di Las as the 3 best Italian songs of the 60s & their amongst their best ever. And yest it was unfortunate that such a good song met Un Jour Un Enfant & De Troubadour amongst others
my 1969 votes.... 12---ITALY....the real winner for me then!!!! 10---NETHERLANDS 08---FRANCE 07---Germany 06---Sweden 05---Norway 04---Monaco 03---Spain 02---Finland 01---U.K.

Now a "extinct" jury - the italian one (without Italy - a great and classy interpreter, Iva Zanicchi, but a so-so song): Yugoslavia 1 point (Dobor Dan, Ivan!) Belgium 2 points Germany 3 points Monaco 4 points Spain 5 points Sweden 6 points Switzerland 7 points France 8 points Portugal 10 points (great performance - a big justice) Netherland 12 points Ciao!
The votes from Gdańsk are coming: 1p France (nice but boring) 2p Germany 3p Switzerland 4p Monaco 5p Ireland 6p Spain 7p UK 8p Portugal 10p Italy 12p NETHERLANDS- I got addicted to this song

I'm always delighted when someone else feels the same about the song & Frida, though we had reversed 1 & 2s when voting, but that's alright because De Troubadour is also amongst my all time favs. 2 very bril songs & great singers. IMHO.
i actually had quite some trouble choosing among the two more my 12 points - in almost any other year, Frida would be a no-brainer - and even considered just giving up and calling it a tie (like I did for my '74 vote). In the end, Lennie prevailed for the sole reason of being sth more original and groundbreaking for the contest.
The lyrics of both songs are suberb-the words sound and resonate so gorgeously in their own languages. BTW I'm revisiting the noughties contests again and so far as I suspected 05 is the impressive year for me. More on that later.
Not to harp on too much, but I have to still plug Vivo Cantando. I know it doesnt rate so highly with you T. but apart from the chirpy lyrics the musical composition is actually very clever in terms of its rhythm and progesive build up in tempo. Topped by great performance by Salome.
Perhaps the reason for not rating so highly was that I first knew it from the studio version - which, IMO, hasn't aged very well. I have to admit though that the live version is a VAST improvement, largely thanks to Salome herself, as you say. Not that I'd still rate it as high as Netherlands and France, but at least it's an entertaining number here.
My favourite from this current decade is 2007. A great variety of songs, many of them excellent, and the contest was won by an actual song, not a dance routine or other stage gimmick. Though the novelty tune coming in second place I felt set a bad precedent (blame Guildo Horn if you must).
Hi to the US Pacific coast (I think?) Tasos & I have already been dicussing this and we (if I can be so royal LOL) agreed that 07 has seen the move from formulaic to more diverse songs, brought on by Lordi winning 06. But IMO the songs are not as good as 05. I thought Ukraine 07 was dreadful.
I think that Lordi were sort of the kick in the pants that Eurovision desperately needed. Some of the earlier 00's were real endurance tests (2001 was especially hard to stay awake for, probably the worst ever contest). And I too thought Verka was just godawful.
We concord. I didnt like the Lordi song - not my kinda music - but remember on the night saying to friends that i believed the win was significant for esc because ir broke the mould and would require new thinking & originality on the part of songwriters. It was also good to see Finland finally getting a win.
And yes! I have to agree that in many respects the 01 contest was awful - winner, songs, set, presentation (dont start me on that!) interval. UUUGH! I just dont get what people saw in the Verka song - dreadful doesnt convey it. Maybe Tasos can shed some lite - he gave it votes in pur poll.
To restore just a bit of my long-lost credibility (lol), I wondered whether I'd actually give any points to Verka. I don't think it was really one of the year's best, but I have to hand it to the Ukrainians that, when they decide to go for camp, they go all the way and then some - "Danzing" was SO over the top it didn't even see it! (if I may say so) Just call it a so-bad-it's-good entry for me, I guess.
Though I'm not totally with you on Verka (see my opinion below), I agree 100% in everything else you say about the '00s contests - some of the early decade contests (and esp. '01) were a triumph of blandness and mediocrity and on the other hand, yes, the overall quality of the '07 contest gave me hope for the future once more (now, if we can only find a way to deal with the neighbour/diaspora voting...)
I think the "neighbour voting" thing is a little overestimated. It has been demonstrated elsewhere that even without the Balkan votes, Marija still would have won. And you'll notice Croatia and Montenegro are conspicuous by their absence in the final (deservedly so, IMO).
(cont'd) Which means that their entry also had sth that attracted the public ear, though I too can't honestly say what it was (maybe, as a friend put it, the thought was "well, if we're gonna have bellydancing, we might as well go for the genuine article!"). Anyway, maybe the 2-semis system can help address the diaspora voting, at least partly. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
(cont'd) The diaspora vote, on the other hand, IS a big problem. The Turkish and Armenian songs (both terrible, IMO) found themselves in the top 5 solely because of migrant populations in France, Germany and the Netherlands spamming SMS votes for their homeland(s). They need to disallow SMS voting and maybe raise the price of phone calls to discourage this kind of voting (I'm sure Verka's disproportionate success is because of this, too; the "drunken prankster" vote)
Yes, I too find all these cries about the neighbour voting to be a bit exaggerated - indeed, all the recent winners were strong entries (in one way or another) that would have gained without the, let's say, "friendly" voting. I'm with you on Armenia, but Turkey also had the diaspora voting going for them in 05 and 06 without managing to go top-10 in either year.
Well said in all aspects. The neighbour voting thing is (imo) cultural and due to the Eastern countries by and large making efforts in there song choices. I think the effect will be force Western countries to up the ante and actually compete to win - and change the voting.
The seemingly unstoppable Paola takes over the runner-up spot, although it'll be hard for her to pose a threat to Frida Boccara, who has a comfortable 28-point lead - meanwhile, Monaco's child-wonder jumps from 9th to 6th place. The latest results: 1) France 121 2) Switzerland 93 3) Netherlands 90 4) UK 85 5) Germany 71 6) Monaco 54 7) Spain 53 8) Portugal 49 9) Italy 47 10) Sweden 38 ...And you can watch the whole contest in my playlists!
Here are my points, Sweden, 1 Norway, 2 Ireland, 3 Germany, 4 Italy, 5 Monaco, 6 Netherlands, 7 Switzerland, 8 United kingdom, 10 and finally.. France 12 points!!
Here are my points for this wonderful year of ESC... I think there could have been 10 winners instead of 4... And sadly enough in my list the actual winners don´t get much of points... 1 Spain 2 Ireland 3 United Kingdom 4 Sweden 5 Portugal 6 Germany 7 Monaco 8 Finland 10 Norway and 12 Switzerland
Switzerland's Paola (who also seems to be doing very well in our 1980 voting) sneaks into the top-3 for the first time, while Portugal and Italy are also moving up. The current top-10: 1) France 109 2) Netherlands 83 3) Switzerland 73 4) UK 72 5) Germany 61 6) Spain 52 7) Portugal 44 8) Italy 42 9) Monaco 41 10) Sweden 33 Last place: still Luxembourg, with 2 points
The 12 points by luxemburgo221 help Germany return into the top-5: 1) France 102 2) Netherlands 77 3) UK 69 4) Switzerland 68 5) Germany 53 6) Spain 48 7) Monaco 41 8) Sweden 33 =9) Italy 32 =9) Portugal 32 ...And you can watch the whole contest in my playlists!

Zaromij's 12 points give Frida a somehow comfortable lead over the competition: 1) France 84 2) Netherlands 69 3) UK 59 4) Switzerland 52 5) Spain 44 6) Germany 41 7) Monaco 33 8) Sweden 29 9) Portugal 27 10) Italy 22 And STILL with nul points: Luxembourg
Forget the other votes from me. I'd forgot Finland. My new top 10: 1 point to Germany 2 points to Sweden 3 points to Belgium 4 points to The Netherlands 5 points to Monaco 6 points to Ireland 7 points to Finland 8 points to Switzerland 10 points to United Kingdom 12 points to France
Long before I saw video recording of the 69 contest I had very distinct memories of how Salome was dressed and what great effect she made of it. I ove it.
After the voting by SundownerDrifting, here's the latest top-10: 1) France 72 2) Netherlands 65 3) UK 49 =4) Spain 44 =4) Switzerland 44 6) Germany 40 7) Monaco 28 =8) Portugal 27 =8) Sweden 27 10) Italy 22 ...And now you can watch the whole contest in my playlists!
¡Hola Madrid! Aquí son mis votos. ¡Ojalá que no empatamos! 1 punto: Reino Unido (OK, the song is dreadful, but I love Lulu!) 2 puntos: Yugoeslavia 3 puntos: Irlanda 4 puntos: Alemania 5 puntos: Suiza (Paola) 6 puntos: Suecia (Tommy) 7 puntos: Italia 8 puntos: Portugal 10 puntos: Francia y las doce puntos para... Países Bajos (Lenny) (This was really tough! My top 4 are all great songs performed brilliantly!)
¡Si, yo tambien tenía el mismo problema! :-) Esp. in the top-2, which is identical to yours - in almost any other year, Frida would be a no-brainer for my 12.
Hmm...it's not letting me post the Youtube link for some reason. But if you do a Youtube search for it, it'll come up. Agnetha's version (recorded before she was in ABBA) is entitled "Sov Gott Min Lilla Vän"
Thanks to klimi94's voting, the Dutch climb all too deservedly to the runner-up spot, behind the also deserving France, while Italy returns to the top-10. The latest results: 1) France 62 2) Netherlands 53 3) UK 48 4) Spain 44 5) Switzerland 39 6) Germany 36 7) Monaco 28 8) Sweden 21 9) Portugal 19 10) Italy 15 Luxembourg still has no points ...And if you want to see the whole contest, check out my playlists!
My Top Ten 1969: Monaco 1 pt Yugoslavia 2 pts Swtzerland 3 pts Itlay 4 Sweden 5 Ireland 6 UK 7 Spain 8 Netherlands 10 France 12 (the most beautiful ESC song ever)
France maintains its lead over the UK, while Spain jumps to 3rd place and, thanks to Mangoteppe's 10 points, Finland breaks in for the first time! The latest top-10: 1) France 42 2) UK 35 3) Spain 32 4) Netherlands 31 5) Germany 29 6) Switzerland 26 7) Monaco 22 =8) Portugal 16 =8) Sweden 16 10) Finland 14 Still with nul points: Luxembourg
My Top 10: (Without Norway) 1 point: Monaco 2 : Switzerland 3 : Germany 4 : Netherland 5 : Belgium 6 : United Kingdom 7 : Spain 8 : Portugal 10 : Finland ( So cute song! ) And the 12 points goes to: France ( A beautiful, powerful song )
cdnserbluvr's voting has had a cataclysmic effect in the top-10, with France now quite deservedly in the lead, but with a distance of just 1 point from, yes, the UK :-) The latest results: 1) France 30 2) UK 29 3) Netherlands 27 4) Germany 26 5) Spain 25 6) Switzerland 24 7) Monaco 21 8) Sweden 16 9) Italy 9 10) Portugal 8
After 3 votes here's a first top-10 - and leading is none of our 12 points, but a song that's been in the top-3 for all of us (but look what's happening at 2nd place!): 1) Germany 26 =2) France 20 =2) Netherlands 20 =2) Spain 20 =2) Switzerland 20 6) UK 17 7) Monaco 15 8) Sweden 8 =9) Italy 7 =9) Portugal 7 Still with nul points: Luxembourg
My votes for the 1969 contest (excluding Finland) 1 point Norway 2 Ireland 3 Italy 4 Monaco 5 Spain 6 Sweden 7 Switzerland 8 Germany 10 France 12 UK (well, what can I say, UK ruled my personal esc charts in the 60`s and 70`s)
7 times top in my chart - just take out '91 from your list and add '68 and '75. That puts them on top of my personal winners' list, with France 2nd (6 wins) and the UK 3rd (5). My, this must make me look weird, doesn't it?
Here are the Patricks vote: 1.Sweden 2.Belgium 3.United Kingdom 4.Finland 5.Yugoslavia 6.Monaco 7.Switzerland 8.Netherlands 10.Germany And finally 12.Spain
One oy favorite years ever, 1969 had an amazing flow of classics, including at least 2 of my all-time favorites. Here's my top-10: 1 point: Sweden 2: UK (mediocre song, great performance) 3: Spain (same as the UK) 4: Italy 5: Monaco 6: Switzerland 7: Portugal (amazing performance) 8: Germany (wonderful and quite underrated) 10: France (one of the best performances and possibly the most beautiful lyrics in all ESC history) and 12 points to... Netherlands (just... WOW!)
Hey tasok all I think is that the first country in teh recap is Switzerland because Switzerlands song was Bonjou,Bonjour and it sounded like the first guy in the recap was singing Bonjou,Bonjour.Well thats what I think maybe im wrong or maybe you made a mistake.
No, it's not a mistake, that's Yugoslavia first. The lyrics of their entry just included greetings in a number of languages ("good morning", "bonjour" etc) - which by the way was a nice way of opening the contest.
I'm amazed as an "Italophile" you only gave Italy 4 pts here. IMO Due.... is T3 Italian songs from the 60s. Although i only gave it 4 pts also I think if I were doing it again I'd bump it up in what was an exceptionally strong year.
Precisely, it was an exceptionally strong year - so my seemingly low score doesn't mean that I don't find it another truly fine Italian entry (not to mention that Iva both looks and sounds amazing!). Would I give it higher marks if I voted today? Yes, possibly, a 5 or 6, but I doubt whether it'd be more than that - my top-4 for the year are all songs I just adore! As for it being one of Italy's best in the 60s, it may be indeed so - though they didn't have a single stinker at that time, IMO.

Yes, that was an eccentric vote of yours if I've ever seen one - giving higher marks to Finland than Netherlands or France?! (two of my all-time favorites, btw) This is just crrraaazyyy!! :-D Can't disagree on your 12p though - a fabulous song indeed.

What about mine?I gave 12 points to Finland and 8 points to Portugal...

This was meant to be a reply on tasosk3's comment on setheurovision94's one!
94ayd 4 years ago
Ah, yes, your was also a totally left-field vote - but I won't critisize it because I too LOVE the Portuguese entry, so you get a pass from me :-D
tasosk3 4 years ago 3
Eccentric maybe right. I cant believe that the phenomenal Frida only warranted 5 pts, Lenny 2 & nothing for Salome. I'm distraught! (LOL!)

And, people, PLEASE STOP DOING THIS!!!
tasosk3 4 years ago
Absolutely incredible - you allow (for example) 1000 Greeks to vote for Greece 12pts & think this is okay when (say for argument sake) 10 UK votes for UK (12PTS) & you think thats fair OR okay. But if you think someone has a double vote you think its digusting? I think maybe you need a logic re-think. If you allow people to vote for their own country, if you allow thousands to vote from one country then u allow duplicate accounts - ITS CALLED A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD
realistESCfan 3 years ago
also ( as LEWIS says time after time!) these votings mean NOTHING so why you getting so uppety at this but turn a blind eye to others ?
realistESCfan 3 years ago
Stop name-dropping! I aint God, its just my opinions
lwsmackie4 3 years ago
Wow, wow there, hold your horses, my friend! First of all, I kind of agree with you and Lewis that these votings meant nothing - well, not exactly nothing, but it wasn't much more than a game and, most of all, a starting point for comparing tastes and discussing older contests (on the other hand, if YOU think they mean nothing, why are you getting so worked up over them?) Second, since I allowed people to vote for their own country, I couldn't pose a restriction on how many could vote (cont'd)
tasosk3 3 years ago

And long may Frida stay at the top!
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
Yes, totally agree - definitely one of my all-time favorites in the contest (the lyrics and the performance are simply awe-inspiring!)
tasosk3 4 years ago
I'm always delighted when someone else feels the same about the song & Frida, though we had reversed 1 & 2s when voting, but that's alright because De Troubadour is also amongst my all time favs. 2 very bril songs & great singers. IMHO.
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
i actually had quite some trouble choosing among the two more my 12 points - in almost any other year, Frida would be a no-brainer - and even considered just giving up and calling it a tie (like I did for my '74 vote). In the end, Lennie prevailed for the sole reason of being sth more original and groundbreaking for the contest.
tasosk3 4 years ago
The lyrics of both songs are suberb-the words sound and resonate so gorgeously in their own languages. BTW I'm revisiting the noughties contests again and so far as I suspected 05 is the impressive year for me. More on that later.
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
Not to harp on too much, but I have to still plug Vivo Cantando. I know it doesnt rate so highly with you T. but apart from the chirpy lyrics the musical composition is actually very clever in terms of its rhythm and progesive build up in tempo. Topped by great performance by Salome.
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
Perhaps the reason for not rating so highly was that I first knew it from the studio version - which, IMO, hasn't aged very well. I have to admit though that the live version is a VAST improvement, largely thanks to Salome herself, as you say. Not that I'd still rate it as high as Netherlands and France, but at least it's an entertaining number here.
tasosk3 4 years ago
My favourite from this current decade is 2007. A great variety of songs, many of them excellent, and the contest was won by an actual song, not a dance routine or other stage gimmick. Though the novelty tune coming in second place I felt set a bad precedent (blame Guildo Horn if you must).
SundownerDrifting 4 years ago
Hi to the US Pacific coast (I think?) Tasos & I have already been dicussing this and we (if I can be so royal LOL) agreed that 07 has seen the move from formulaic to more diverse songs, brought on by Lordi winning 06. But IMO the songs are not as good as 05. I thought Ukraine 07 was dreadful.
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
I think that Lordi were sort of the kick in the pants that Eurovision desperately needed. Some of the earlier 00's were real endurance tests (2001 was especially hard to stay awake for, probably the worst ever contest). And I too thought Verka was just godawful.
SundownerDrifting 4 years ago
We concord. I didnt like the Lordi song - not my kinda music - but remember on the night saying to friends that i believed the win was significant for esc because ir broke the mould and would require new thinking & originality on the part of songwriters. It was also good to see Finland finally getting a win.
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
To restore just a bit of my long-lost credibility (lol), I wondered whether I'd actually give any points to Verka. I don't think it was really one of the year's best, but I have to hand it to the Ukrainians that, when they decide to go for camp, they go all the way and then some - "Danzing" was SO over the top it didn't even see it! (if I may say so) Just call it a so-bad-it's-good entry for me, I guess.
tasosk3 4 years ago
Though I'm not totally with you on Verka (see my opinion below), I agree 100% in everything else you say about the '00s contests - some of the early decade contests (and esp. '01) were a triumph of blandness and mediocrity and on the other hand, yes, the overall quality of the '07 contest gave me hope for the future once more (now, if we can only find a way to deal with the neighbour/diaspora voting...)
tasosk3 4 years ago
I think the "neighbour voting" thing is a little overestimated. It has been demonstrated elsewhere that even without the Balkan votes, Marija still would have won. And you'll notice Croatia and Montenegro are conspicuous by their absence in the final (deservedly so, IMO).
SundownerDrifting 4 years ago
(cont'd) Which means that their entry also had sth that attracted the public ear, though I too can't honestly say what it was (maybe, as a friend put it, the thought was "well, if we're gonna have bellydancing, we might as well go for the genuine article!"). Anyway, maybe the 2-semis system can help address the diaspora voting, at least partly. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
tasosk3 4 years ago
(cont'd) The diaspora vote, on the other hand, IS a big problem. The Turkish and Armenian songs (both terrible, IMO) found themselves in the top 5 solely because of migrant populations in France, Germany and the Netherlands spamming SMS votes for their homeland(s). They need to disallow SMS voting and maybe raise the price of phone calls to discourage this kind of voting (I'm sure Verka's disproportionate success is because of this, too; the "drunken prankster" vote)
SundownerDrifting 4 years ago
Yes, I too find all these cries about the neighbour voting to be a bit exaggerated - indeed, all the recent winners were strong entries (in one way or another) that would have gained without the, let's say, "friendly" voting. I'm with you on Armenia, but Turkey also had the diaspora voting going for them in 05 and 06 without managing to go top-10 in either year.
tasosk3 4 years ago
Well said in all aspects. The neighbour voting thing is (imo) cultural and due to the Eastern countries by and large making efforts in there song choices. I think the effect will be force Western countries to up the ante and actually compete to win - and change the voting.
ESCsince1968 4 years ago
I bet you feel stupid now! Its beyond argument that neighbourhood voting destroys this contest - wake up you dreamers!

Hey tasok all I think is that the first country in teh recap is Switzerland because Switzerlands song was Bonjou,Bonjour and it sounded like the first guy in the recap was singing Bonjou,Bonjour.Well thats what I think maybe im wrong or maybe you made a mistake.
LukeJanik 4 years ago
No, it's not a mistake, that's Yugoslavia first. The lyrics of their entry just included greetings in a number of languages ("good morning", "bonjour" etc) - which by the way was a nice way of opening the contest.
tasosk3 4 years ago
Oh, yes, and it's "Bonjour, Bonjour", not "Bonjou" - just a small typo there.
tasosk3 4 years ago
I'm amazed as an "Italophile" you only gave Italy 4 pts here. IMO Due.... is T3 Italian songs from the 60s. Although i only gave it 4 pts also I think if I were doing it again I'd bump it up in what was an exceptionally strong year.
ESCsince1968 3 years ago
Precisely, it was an exceptionally strong year - so my seemingly low score doesn't mean that I don't find it another truly fine Italian entry (not to mention that Iva both looks and sounds amazing!). Would I give it higher marks if I voted today? Yes, possibly, a 5 or 6, but I doubt whether it'd be more than that - my top-4 for the year are all songs I just adore! As for it being one of Italy's best in the 60s, it may be indeed so - though they didn't have a single stinker at that time, IMO.
