Georges is great, i agree, But Coppola was his master, and his friend too. So, thank you Coppola, your old student is now a big man in the world of movie.
I am fond of the public image of George Lucas. Frankly, I am watching a lot of B movies about Space made before his work. Space films fell into 2 categories... Documentaries or celluloid devoid of any science or plot ! Even Peter Bogdonavitch did a re-edit and additional scenes for a Roger Corman project based on the Russian film footage 'Planeta Burr'. Kubrick 2001 was good, but no adrenaline. Using better tech and the action serial style was an evolution, not a revival. Thanks George.
A little known fact is that George was one of the cameramen at the Rolling Stones free concert at Altamont in Dec. 69. He may have even been the one who caught the fatal stabbing on camera.
that is also true, but i still think he should direct again, something different sci.fi,drama.whatever, hes too good to waste himself producing and whatching someone else do his stuff, so many movies colid have gone better with him doing them
George Lucas is a true filmmaking genius, seriously : No gratuitous violence, sex or profanity in his movies yet he packs them in solid. It takes true talent to pull something like that off. How I wish Lucas had done Avatar...Jim Cameron beat him to the punch.
I respect Lucas, but his career is bitter-sweet. Whenever he makes a film in the spirit of American Zoetrope, it tends to come out far more avant-garde then projects like "The Crystal Skull"
I admire Coppola, and Lucas' ability to pen scripts where they could make stars. IE: Hopper,Dreyfus,Ford, the list goes on and on.
I wish there was more of an emphasis on helping young film-makers produce original low budget films while cultivating talent.
Dude should direct something else. Episodes i.ii.iii prove that he`s rusted, and obssesed with special effects because he never had any in his time. He should do something original, no holds barred, all the CGI he wants, that way well can see his True Style, not something WE think is his style, and then rant about it. His movies are HIS, not ours, no matter how much we treasure them. THX is the perfect example; the cut is what he wanted to do but could`nt for lack of money, that`s it.
@stembrick How do 1, 2 and 3 prove that he's rusted? lots of old people just say that because they grew up with the original trilogy. Not because it's "better" just because that's what kind of movie it was back then. I love both trilogies, but the prequel trilogy has better special effects, just as good a story, way faster paced lightsaber fights, and minblowing sound when compared to the original 3 films. Love ya' lucas
@youZEU5 wow i never thought i hear someone refer to my generation as old. The first trilogy (ie 4, 5, and 6) has a differant meaning for us. However objectively speaking you are very right about 1, 2, and 3. For me those moves bring a sense of completion and expansion.
@peninsularat haha, i didnt mean "OLD" as in age, i kinda just meant older than the prequel generation. I too like the original trilogy better, but they are both very good
I love how he reminisces over his successes and failures, yet remains humble. That's why he's still my inspiration to get into writing and storytelling! Thanks George.
So they studio didn't like it? That's hilarious. And Lucas went on and made some of the best fims in the world. Boy did they ever screw that one up!!!
I do like what he was able to achieve, but I also have to add that he's an example that often it's not about being a great director. but about being able to surround yourself with the right people to work with.
That can be said of almost anyone in Hollywood, though moreso for some than others.
Despite the bashings he's been taking and his recent missteps, I still hold Lucas in high regard. When one looks back over everything he did during the creation of his original Star Wars trilogy, it's quite staggering.
Some of these changes can be seen as good, others less so. However, his legacy remains undeniable: movies as we know them today are a product of George Lucas' vision.

@Chrisdrumz His camera jammed after only a minute or two of filming, and he ended up with no usable footage. It wouldn't have been him.

Lucas changed Hollywood in more ways than one.
Some of these changes can be seen as good, others less so. However, his legacy remains undeniable: movies as we know them today are a product of George Lucas' vision.
