Depp was chosen because he is a box office draw, he was not chosen for having the best voice for the part. There are many people who can already imitate the Rango voice, so it's not like they had to cast Depp.

This is the first time the voice actors themselves have really partaken in the "acting out" of their animated counterparts. But I agree: this is really is an innovative way to make animated movies.
