That reminds of my first job with Santa Fe i use to be a gateman all i did was watch for trains and let the gates down i work out of a 8x8 shed along with a fella on the other side of the crossing.
@tartopfan A 1941 Chevrolet crashing thru the gate, I jumped in the ditch the tore up the shed and getting torn up by a 3700 class Baldwin Steamer. ATSF put up a Wig Wag Signal 2 days later and I didn't have to do that anymore.
@pwalpar I dont know them, just met them, but hey, got to eat with the boss, and what not, it only the few days they were out working to like me, awsome guys
@northstar2007 Some of the "silver huts" have battery back-up power for the crossing gates. I think that's a DOT requirement. Back in the 60s, 70s, and 80,s when my father was a signal maintainer, they had relays controlling the gates. Then as my father retired they went with all electronic control systems. Solid state.
I'm a Signal maintainer in Australia and we have a few of those gate mechanisms :) They're not common but they are around! Good to see how things are done around the globe.
@tacko3 Are Australian railroads more modern than in the US? Does Australia tend to have European equipment, US equipment or do they have their own indiginous equipment?
Great video Walter. Good thing you were there to film I like seeing this kind of stuff , you don't get to see every day. It was perfect too because the first one we couldn't see inside but the last two were right there for us to see.
If I wanted the lights just to flash, I simply would have broken my gp contact inside the mech. However, I had the gates fall for a reason. Get a life Elton.
Well Elton...Aren't you the man? Whatever...Why don't you get your facts straight before you run your mouth. You're the only one that is looking stupid.
Signal maintainer must of done a cycle test of the gates. Looks like a good job except having to be on call 24 hours when something malfunction's for gets hit. Excellent video Walter thanks for posting this one.
Nice view, Walter! There really is a "bunch" of stuff that goes on there! I love the public how they can't wait simply five minutes. LOL! And the one guy in the van throwing his arm up and rolling down his window like hes gonna do something then drives around the gate! WOW! 5/5 from me!
Nice. Half the people didn't stop at the one stop sign. Also love it when the drivers start going around the crossing arms. IDK, maybe people are careless and couldn't wait a few minutes.
great vid walter and we had them doing that about 3 weeks ago here but i didnt have my camera with me and it was lunch time so i was going home for the day. great vid again and very cool.
Don't know why prople have 2 run through the crossing's when they know the gates are down...
