  • Kate Bush oozes what England used to be about. Well spoken, educated and so much class.

These peformances remind me why we're in the history books. You can destroy Englishness, but you can never imitate it.

    Live forever Kate Bush.

  • Oh my god.

    I'm there!

    Poor little fox.

  • i wonder did the totp audience of march 1986 realise just how privileged they were? this is kates best totp performance by a mile!

  • Sexy performance of a woman in a suit too big for her? :o

    She is... seductive ;__; ...

  • the futureheads fucking suck!

  • @Lucanking: without the original, there would be no "Futureheads" nor any other derivative version. Nothing grows from nothing, me boy.

  • This original isn't bad, but it's a bit dated dated compared to Futureheads version, which is a lot better, with a more modern, updated sound.

  • @Lucanking sorry, but that futurehead cover is not really that good. and that's not singing, it's shouting.

  • I also think she would have been a fine actress...

  • People, it is MUCH EASIER to copy somebody's work (make it more modern) and then get the credits. Not a big deal!

  • Anyone who says the futureheads did this better has a shit music taste.

  • Is she lip-syncing again? I can never tell.

  • @ThePerfectScience It was TOTP that mimed on that show...

  • Wow...I never knew Kate Bush did a cover of The Futureheads 24 years ago!

  • @llamaassociation Well, I did not know that she covered Within Temptation's RUTH 30 years ago! ;]

  • @BrokenSoulsAlliance I accidently gave you a thumbs up, it was meant to be a thumbs down.

  • @cornpap2k9

You do have a point there. But in my opinion they just perform it better :)

  • @xXchrisgunnXx i am going to have to dissagree again

  • The futurheads definately did this song better

  • @xXchrisgunnXx how can you say that?? her songs are filled with emotion and meaning and covers of her work can never do justice to her songs and if kate diddnt write this the futureheads would never of had any hit single or album

  • can any one else think of a top 10 song in the 80's that did not have guitar (or electric bass for that matter). to my knowledge, this is one the first "alt-music" hits.

  • most people mimed on TOTP... all the acts from the 80's i have seen have, wham, madonna, blondie... it was just so there wasnt a cock up and they sounded good... kate is amazing live, i actually think she sings better live. :)

  • She must be really unsure of herself to NEVER perform live.

  • This is a most excellent song. Brilliant lyrics too. One of those songs that should have done much better in the charts.

  • I absolutely worship Kate but that was a lip-synch.

  • @robertsabella She had to lip-synch... it was Top of the Pops policy in the 80s. It made filming it quicker & they only had an afternoon to do it in.

  • "dont dash to the shops just yet" haha the most unnecessary advice ever. Nice to see early 80's Midge Ure on the keyboard.

  • Some sad pricks keep marking all the "futureheads are better" comments as spam. Wow. I agree though. Futureheads made it more exciting. This version also sounds so out of time even though its not...odd.

  • @jwalker236 more exciting cause it's been done in your era of music. There can be no MORE anything with a song that's been conceptually, stylistically, musically, artistically and lyrically ripped off. This VERSION gave birth to the song you freak.

  • @Ghat801 wow way to over react. If its in my era or not matters very little when talking about how exciting i find the music mate. I find the kinks more exciting than the kooks for example :P Which time period its from does absolutely nothing to take away from my opinion of how much i enjoy songs when im open minded and listen to a large range of music from different decades.

  • Fantastic! I love you Kate!!!

  • Exquisite.

  • o kate bin in love with you since 78 now im 47 your the best and so normal no shit about ya xx

  • Man I LOVE this!

  • So amazing. Kate is such a wonderful artist!

  • loooove this song, cant stop listening to it!

  • 'I always thought that Kate Bush would have made a fine actress'. She has been one in The Line, The Cross and The Curve. But she has acted in her stand alone videos too of course.

  • TOTP needs to come back =( I remember watching TOTP2 back in the day. Dinner time, retro tunes, funny captions. Epic.

  • The futureheads version gave it extra punch if anything I'd say (:

  • @sammeister1 it's more exciting isn't it :P

  • @sammeister1 extra punch hey? they just dumbed it down with a layer of drums for a generation who requires everything with a layer of dumb punch.

  • Brilliant song and interesting to watch. She looks incredibly uncomfortable I think. I guess miming and top of the pops was not for her.

  • Kate

    forever...

  • kate is just briliant i know that she is miming but it dosent matter because we all know that she can sing and delivers perfection every time not like anyone else around today

  • Why is this album soooo hard to find....

  • i want to live inside this video.

  • I've been in love with her (yeah, unusual, eh?) since 1979, and she just gets better and better.

  • wow that was sexy!

  • Lovely Kate...

  • kate is just out of this world! kate if you dont do another album ( tutch wood!) at least rerelease all of your hits so we can buy them!

  • i love how it says "a massive eight years ago" and it was twelve years between the last two. i sure hope that was the climax and the time between is going to get shorter and shorter from now on.

  • Haha. A bit like Sade. Ms Adu and her band are releasing one next Feb which will make it 10 years since her last and it was 8 years the 1 before that. Funny, Kate and Sade are two of my favourite female artists from that era & they both hardly record or go on tour if @all. Anyway, big fan of this tune. Surprised to see KB performing on TOTP.

  • do you have the oirginal file to this?

  • hey, i agree with the guy at the and i think she would have made a great actress. words can not express how amazing i think she is. I'm a huge fan!

  • This song is surreal. I love its feminine visceral tone. It's even more arresting that she performs the song in conservative clothing and the music and the lyrics and her singing are driving hard from beginning to end. I am enthralled.

  • Bobby Robson RIP

  • Happy Birthday, Kate!

  • Happy birthday Kate!!!

  • Is that the former England & Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman playing the piano? Love this song, I quite like the Futureheads cover too. Thanks for uploading!

  • Great song and a great female artist in Kate Bush.

  • I found the text on screen funny. "The last time Kate released an album was a massive 8 years ago, but there is the hint of one coming in the Autumn." It would be another four/five years actually. ;)

  • Wow i never new :L

I like the cover more but this is pretty awesome haha

  • Such a shame that Kate B. doesn't do at least the occasional live thing....this song in particular has the potential to be a monster in that setting. Imagine the sort of band she could pull together at this point, and how this beast could be extended....

  • Its funny seeing them pretendding to play their instruments :-)

  • I sometimes think we don't deserve Kate ... when I think of all of the garbage that masquerades as "popular music". Thank heavens for this true musical genius.

  • I sometimes people just don't understand what a massive role kate bush has made in music to show woman as smart sexy and tallented woman can be in the moden age.

God bless you kate thanks to you I grew up with a big respect for woman as a whole.

I can 100% say you are the reason I didn't end up being gay.

  • you are sooooo right thank you for being honesT!!!!

  • One of my favourite Kate Bush songs !!!

  • If michael Jackson is the king of pop, Kate Bush must be the queen

  • thru the trees help me someone help me please

take my shoes off and throw them in the lake

  • This song rocks!

  • Kate is unique and so..so..so creative

  • The song is timeless - it's just me that's getting old.

How can anyone do this and Wuthering Heights? Has she got a portal to another universe.

    2:35 !!!

  • this song is really old, but it sounds very modern. timeless

  • She`s the best - i love KATE BUSH

  • pure class simply the best

  • Futureheads cover is an awesum tribute to Bush,

what u complaining aboot! BELT UP!

  • wow never knew the future heads coverd this

good they look like a shit band now

  • braniacbelle, what have you used to defend The Futureheads' version? Where did you ever justify the removing of the original's dynamics or Bush's idiosyncratic voice/vocal patterns in favor of a glorified pop-punk song that couldn't possibly be more uninspired and generic? All you said was that The Futureheads "liberated Northern music," which is just as opinionated and unfounded as your comments about Kate Bush being seen as a joke.

You're pretty much the pot calling the ivory black.

  • i adore kate and this is a top tune. great album also

  • Wow! With that outfit she could have played Alexis' daughter in Dynasty.

  • Yeah, that suit really ...well... suited her.

  • the futureheads ruined my pleasure of listening to this.

  • Steve Wright: 'I always thought that Kate Bush would have made a fine actress.'

This will have been shown on TOP2 after Kate Bush had already been an actress in The Line, The Cross and the Curve.

  • just amazing! i can't find the words to express how i love her music. She completely mesmerises and transfixes me and i become wrapped in a sonic world that lifts me into another dimension.

  • I can assure you that Kate Bush was never considered a joke by anyone that matters

  • KATE SIMPLY THE BEST

  • Says the person who told me to "go put a bomb in a bin, Mickey" because I happen to be Irish. Oh dear...

  • You called me an asshole ..I just slated you back. However, looking back on that, I did feel quite bad about it so I do apologise.

  • And so you should...why do all english people think irish people are all bombers...and killers...visit Ireland...you'll find we're probably the friendliest people in the world.........but at least you apologised!! respect for that

  • ERIN GO BRAGH

  • that is true i went to ireland to race in ulster grand prix and the locals were freindliest people ive ever met

  • thanx for your comment!

  • dunno about you but I got a B in terrorism in the junior cert

    honours level.

  • I really wish The Futureheads looked back on her work with rose colored glasses. I think they were wearing beer goggles.

  • You're both assholes.

  • Oh go put a bomb in a bin, Mickey.

  • I think it takes not only guts but creativity to change a song that is already a good piece of music into a different thing all together. I think this is a rather indisputable fact. I understand you Kate Bush lovers will be a bit disheartened by this but it's fact. Although, I do agree that Kate has had a more prolific and recognizable career ...that doesn't mean that she's any better than The Futureheads, just different. A lot of people look back on her work with rose coloured glasses.

  • a lot of people look back at your comments with asshole coloured glasses because that's what you are

  • Why would people have asshole coloured glasses? Surely they're losing out a lot more than me there. Didn't think that one through there did you. FAIL!

  • na they did a different version of it you can't compaire the two at all, kates was good in a pop way, futureheads was good in a rock way. I like them both

  • I agree in a sense Vikki, just for my ears I prefer The Futureheads' version (obviously) but that doesn't make Kate's any worse, not at all ..it's about personal taste I guess but to me it takes quite a dynamic mind to achieve a good cover when the original is so good. To make it better ..I think that's no easy feat. Look at Amy Winehouse's version of Valerie. Case and point.

  • cuz ur a asshole

  • My God, I must admit that was the most epic comeback I've ever heard in my entire life. Jeez, that really taught me a lesson ho ho. By the way it's 'cause you're an asshole, not that idiot txt speak that you use ...which normally makes a person an asshole.

  • wich normaly makes u a asshole

  • Not being able to spell makes you an asshole . So why am I an asshole? Give a valid reason, or so you think, why I'm an asshole (and for the love of God spell properly this time).

  • I've met Kate Bush in person and had a quick chat to her without realising who she was at the time. Fact.

  • By that I mean I was an idiot, not that I shouldn't have recognised her. She was really nice as well :)

  • WOW...what did you talk about?!?!?!

  • When you get to like a song, your mind naturally makes a strong bond between the song and the artist who made the recording. So, if it's a cover, you'll resist the original version when you hear it. I'm quite sure all those who prefer the Futureheads' version do so because that's the version that first made them love the song. But I doubt that anyone who heard Bush first would prefer the Futureheads.

  • i love kate bush's voice its alot diffent to any other vocals you hear nowadays, they are all the same. i dont think there will be a singer quite like kate bush. still i preer running up that hill, i prefer the futureheads cover aswell

  • Boy, do you need to get out more if you think Futurehead's version is better. But then, there's no accounting for taste, even if it's bad.

  • Old? What's your problem? Have you found some way of not maturing? So what if the Futureheads are on tour? Is that supposed to mean something? Let's see if anyone is recording their songs or citing them as an influence 20 years from now. Now go take care of your spots, and don't wet the bed, again.

  • I totally agree with you, everyone goes on about Beethoven being the greatest composers ever, but I've never read about HIM in Rolling Stone, or seen HIM on tour.

Blink 182 on the otherhand INVENTED punk rock, then called it a day and then the keyboard player was in a car crash and then they REFORMED to go on tour and record more music.

Listen to some REAL music GRANDADS

  • I want to marry you.

  • never seen Beethoven on tour?! are you serious?!! he's been dead for about 200 years! and i doubt you'd see Blink 182 in classical FM magazine, it works both ways.

  • blink 182 did not create punk rock, they just commercialised it

  • it's called sarcasm guys

    idiots

  • My GOD, I hope this is sarcasm because if it's not, you just made me VERY angry.

  • What's so inspiring about taking a song you didn't write, completely removing all the dynamics, changing a lot of the vocal rhythms to be off-time and forced out, and poliishing it all off with awkward panning backing vocals?

The Futureheads only succeeded in taking an 80s song that was delightfully corny (musically) and removing the "delightfully." Band sucks.

  • omg u r a total spanker- lmao- what a knob

  • Yeah, you just keep telling yourself that.

  • Future who ??????????

  • On tour playing songs they didn't write... great success story.

  • Well it's not like Kate's going to be touring any time soon now is it ...actually, she never did. Least they manage that. And it's NOT 'songs' it's song ...one song ...that they made better. Psh.

  • Kate has made a huge mark on the music world with only one tour, so I don't see why you're using that for leverage with some thid-rate nonsense band.

  • I want that jacket

  • sheer brilliance

  • Kate Bush was fine. Her "band" was a right motley crew though. Very, very weird. It's no surprise she turned a little odd mixing with that lot.

  • What a staggeringly beautiful woman she is.

  • Kaaaaate, why the lip synching?

  • Because she was on TOTP.

  • There were policies in place at TOTP that REQUIRED lip-synching. It wasn't a choice that the performers had much say in.

  • That would explain it. Although, she did always dislike public performances.

  • i looove her facial expressions!

  • Yet another voice-over to the album. Ah, the 80s...it would have been nice to actually have heard her sing something. But, alas, no.

  • "Yet another voice-over to the album. Ah, the 80s...it would have been nice to actually have heard her sing something. But, alas, no."

Just be glad she's appearing live at all. She hasn't done that since 1993 at least.

Kate, come back, please. All is forgiven.

  • Love Kate Bush. Love this album. Love this song. I wonder what she's doing now...?

  • She lives in a big house in Devon. She is very private. She lives with her partner Danny and her son Bertie.

  • kate went into hiding for a little while

but has a new album out that was released in 2007 x

  • I remember watching this...the original 1986 broadcast that is...

  • I wish she could perform in the US. Love her so much. Great songs, great voice. There's no one quite like her.

  • Steves right or wright

  • I'd really, really... REALLY love to listen to kate singin' it live...

    This song is amazing. =(

  • Who cares if she's lip synching? It's not like it's someone else's voice. It's her voice. Besides almost everyone lip synched on these types of shows.

    This song is hot!

  • wow you are incredibly dense: EVERY SINGLE BAND EVER on Top of the Pops are REQUIRED TO lip-sync.

Let me make it simple for you to understand:

Top of the Pops = Lip-syncing. Get it?

Please, take even a few SECONDS of your life researching a single fact like that before whining and complaining.

  • Let me make it clear for you. Read my comment again IN FULL and take it in the context it was meant you doughnut. When you've wiped the egg of your face, feel free to email me an apology. I think I deserve one.

  • And her suit is too big because .... ?

  • It was the 80s? Big suits were in. I think she looks stunning.

  • 80s fashion! Power dressing, shoulder pads! I think she is wearing it to show that even the modern business woman, like everyone, succumbs to love!

  • I still wear that stuff. Well, I'm 13 but I absolutely love Kate Bush and I dress like her and I have her hairstyle and everything.

    XD

All my "friends" are like "WHY Do you dress like that?!" And I dont even care :D

  • "I still wear that stuff. Well, I'm 13 but I absolutely love Kate Bush and I dress like her and I have her hairstyle and everything.

    XD

All my "friends" are like "WHY Do you dress like that?!" And I dont even care :D"

    Good for you. ;)

  • This is a surprise. Didn't Kate see TOTP as a bit, er, beneath her?

  • I'm sure she is far too nice to take that kind of attitude. TOTP was watched by loads of record buyers at this time and she wanted to sell this record. The album was very expensive for her to make.

  • Unforgettable moment when I first moved to England for three years! I saw this very performance on TOPTP. Wow. Memories..

  • a beguiling combination of Vivien Leigh, Liz Taylor and GOD!

  • An Joan Collins! :-)

  • Always thought that too, but decided it was classier - and less provocative - not to mention it here!
