@xXchrisgunnXx how can you say that?? her songs are filled with emotion and meaning and covers of her work can never do justice to her songs and if kate diddnt write this the futureheads would never of had any hit single or album
can any one else think of a top 10 song in the 80's that did not have guitar (or electric bass for that matter). to my knowledge, this is one the first "alt-music" hits.
most people mimed on TOTP... all the acts from the 80's i have seen have, wham, madonna, blondie... it was just so there wasnt a cock up and they sounded good... kate is amazing live, i actually think she sings better live. :)

@jwalker236 more exciting cause it's been done in your era of music. There can be no MORE anything with a song that's been conceptually, stylistically, musically, artistically and lyrically ripped off. This VERSION gave birth to the song you freak.

Haha. A bit like Sade. Ms Adu and her band are releasing one next Feb which will make it 10 years since her last and it was 8 years the 1 before that. Funny, Kate and Sade are two of my favourite female artists from that era & they both hardly record or go on tour if @all. Anyway, big fan of this tune. Surprised to see KB performing on TOTP.

braniacbelle, what have you used to defend The Futureheads' version? I think healthy debate is fine. If anyone had given an actual reason for why Kate's version is better than The Futureheads' version rather than just spitting bile then it could have been an interesting debate, however, a lot of people sadly lack debating skills. Meh, they like what they like :)

I understand you Kate Bush lovers will be a bit disheartened by this but it's fact. Although, I do agree that Kate has had a more prolific and recognizable career ...that doesn't mean that she's any better than The Futureheads, just different. A lot of people look back on her work with rose coloured glasses.

I agree in a sense Vikki, just for my ears I prefer The Futureheads' version (obviously) but that doesn't make Kate's any worse, not at all ..it's about personal taste I guess but to me it takes quite a dynamic mind to achieve a good cover when the original is so good. To make it better ..I think that's no easy feat. Look at Amy Winehouse's version of Valerie. Case and point.
My God, I must admit that was the most epic comeback I've ever heard in my entire life. Jeez, that really taught me a lesson ho ho. By the way it's 'cause you're an asshole, not that idiot txt speak that you use ...which normally makes a person an asshole.

The Futureheads version WAS and IS and will always be BETTER than Kate's version. On a technical level, inspiring level it is noted as one of the best covers full stop. However, I agree that Kate will be probably remembered by a wider audience while The Futureheads will be loved by niche audiences remaining essentially obscure, BUT, that doesn't make them any less professional and awe inspiring as Kate. They're both valid musicians, just go about it different ways.
What's so inspiring about taking a song you didn't write, completely removing all the dynamics, changing a lot of the vocal rhythms to be off-time and forced out, and poliishing it all off with awkward panning backing vocals?
The Futureheads only succeeded in taking an 80s song that was delightfully corny (musically) and removing the "delightfully." Band sucks.
Well it's not like Kate's going to be touring any time soon now is it ...actually, she never did. Least they manage that. And it's NOT 'songs' it's song ...one song ...that they made better. Psh.

I don't dispute that she made a huge mark on music but at the time that she was performing, she was seen as a joke. Especially because of Wuthering Heights.
It's important not to idolize music just because it's aged and rather look to current and future music to inspire us. Future musicians have a harder job to create unique sounds because as people say, "It's all been done"
The Futureheads liberated Northern music and inspired A LOT of people, I think they deserve to be respected.
Who cares if she's lip synching? It's not like it's someone else's voice. It's her voice. Besides almost everyone lip synched on these types of shows.
Let me make it clear for you. Read my comment again IN FULL and take it in the context it was meant you doughnut. When you've wiped the egg of your face, feel free to email me an apology. I think I deserve one.
I'm sure she is far too nice to take that kind of attitude. TOTP was watched by loads of record buyers at this time and she wanted to sell this record. The album was very expensive for her to make.
Kate Bush oozes what England used to be about. Well spoken, educated and so much class.
These peformances remind me why we're in the history books. You can destroy Englishness, but you can never imitate it.
Live forever Kate Bush.

On tour playing songs they didn't write... great success story.
naturegoulet 2 years ago
Well it's not like Kate's going to be touring any time soon now is it ...actually, she never did. Least they manage that. And it's NOT 'songs' it's song ...one song ...that they made better. Psh.
brainiacbelle 2 years ago
Kate has made a huge mark on the music world with only one tour, so I don't see why you're using that for leverage with some thid-rate nonsense band.

Kate Bush was fine. Her "band" was a right motley crew though. Very, very weird. It's no surprise she turned a little odd mixing with that lot.

What a staggeringly beautiful woman she is.

Kaaaaate, why the lip synching?
Jamaaays 3 years ago
Because she was on TOTP.
ladyvee7110 3 years ago
There were policies in place at TOTP that REQUIRED lip-synching. It wasn't a choice that the performers had much say in.
keithdeweese 3 years ago 3
That would explain it. Although, she did always dislike public performances.
Jamaaays 3 years ago
i looove her facial expressions!

Yet another voice-over to the album. Ah, the 80s...it would have been nice to actually have heard her sing something. But, alas, no.

Just be glad she's appearing live at all. She hasn't done that since 1993 at least.
Kate, come back, please. All is forgiven.

Love Kate Bush. Love this album. Love this song. I wonder what she's doing now...?

She lives in a big house in Devon. She is very private. She lives with her partner Danny and her son Bertie.

I'd really, really... REALLY love to listen to kate singin' it live...
This song is amazing. =(

Who cares if she's lip synching? It's not like it's someone else's voice. It's her voice. Besides almost everyone lip synched on these types of shows.
This song is hot!

I can't believe Kate isn't singing live. I'm so disappointed that she is lip synching.
Sorry for the above comment. Just thought I'd pre-empt any sanctimonious, whining Yank having a dig at Kate. My apologies.

wow you are incredibly dense: EVERY SINGLE BAND EVER on Top of the Pops are REQUIRED TO lip-sync.
Let me make it simple for you to understand:
Top of the Pops = Lip-syncing. Get it?
Please, take even a few SECONDS of your life researching a single fact like that before whining and complaining.

Let me make it clear for you. Read my comment again IN FULL and take it in the context it was meant you doughnut. When you've wiped the egg of your face, feel free to email me an apology. I think I deserve one.

And her suit is too big because .... ?

It was the 80s? Big suits were in. I think she looks stunning.

80s fashion! Power dressing, shoulder pads! I think she is wearing it to show that even the modern business woman, like everyone, succumbs to love!
Edwiness 3 years ago
I still wear that stuff. Well, I'm 13 but I absolutely love Kate Bush and I dress like her and I have her hairstyle and everything.
XD
All my "friends" are like "WHY Do you dress like that?!" And I dont even care :D

This is a surprise. Didn't Kate see TOTP as a bit, er, beneath her?
GrossbergerXXX 3 years ago
I'm sure she is far too nice to take that kind of attitude. TOTP was watched by loads of record buyers at this time and she wanted to sell this record. The album was very expensive for her to make.
