I started doing a bit of research on this matter when some of my Filipino classmates said they were Asian. To be honest, I was really surprised. I didn't know Filipinos considered themselves to be Asian. Like I said, it seems to only be Filipinos and (some) non-Asians. I hope I'm not sounding racist now.

There's a few Filipino kids in my class who insist that they're Asian, but there is also one in another class that says he is P.I. Even my world geography teacher considers Filipinos as P.I. I don't know why, but Filipinos seem to be the only ones saying they're Asian. Many other Asian groups (East Asian) such as my own family consider Filipinos as P.I.'s.

I've read some discussions on this topic of why Filipinos in America deny being Asian. One Filipino said is it's because Filipinos would rather be Polynesians than to be Filipino. Is that right? Every Filipino party I have been to have Polynesian dancers but never do they have a traditional Filipino dance.

Japanese has sleet eyes, which is why americans include them to be asians, Indonesia is dominated by muslim population, and muslims came from another asian country, saudi arabia. Philippine culture is closer to the islanders than the other asian countries, except for some like eating rice. Philippines will be considered by all poeple if marcos did not step in to become president.

Good point. But as I was saying earlier also - Phillipines is closer to the Pacific Islands than almost all the other Asian countries. Indonesia (If it's considered Asia) is probably the closest to it...So it's no mystery as to why Filipinos and Pacific Islanders have similarities...They live in close proximity to each other (By that I mean a thousand miles or so haha)

As u might know, Spain was conquered for a period of time by the Moors via Morocco. Anyhow, when I 1st learned about the writing system, it was taught to me as just Baybayin. I only heard the term Alibata recently from my friend Zyla in Mindanao. Well, I'm really into our culture, before all the foreign influences, so thank u for clarifying.

That was a mistake made by one of our researchers who thought baybayin had arabic roots, when clearly it doesn't, the term "alibata" itself is rooted from an arabic word, that's why it sounds arabic, but as I said, that was a misnomer, and an improper name, the actual name is "Baybayin", or sulat tagalog. It's roots is hard to understand, people like to label it everywhere, but in reality it's a mix, of various south east asian writings.

In all seriousness, there is no such thing as an asian or pacific islander race, but culturally and geographically, we are closer to that of south east and east asia than the islands near polynesia.

There's a few Filipino kids in my class who insist that they're Asian, but there is also one in another class that says he is P.I. Even my world geography teacher considers Filipinos as P.I. Philippine culture is closer to the islanders than the other asian countries, except for some like eating rice. Philippines will be considered by all poeple if marcos did not step in to become president.

Good point. But as I was saying earlier also - Phillipines is closer to the Pacific Islands than almost all the other Asian countries. Indonesia (If it's considered Asia) is probably the closest to it...So it's no mystery as to why Filipinos and Pacific Islanders have similarities...They live in close proximity to each other (By that I mean a thousand miles or so haha)

Filipinos are Asians that are more similar to the Pacific Islanders than any other Asian race due to their common ancestry (Austronesian roots). Although people from South China also share those roots - those people are NOT Chinese. As u might know, Spain was conquered for a period of time by the Moors via Morocco. Anyhow, when I 1st learned about the writing system, it was taught to me as just Baybayin. That was a mistake made by one of our researchers who thought baybayin had arabic roots, when clearly it doesn't, the term "alibata" itself is rooted from an arabic word, that's why it sounds arabic, but as I said, that was a misnomer, and an improper name, the actual name is "Baybayin", or sulat tagalog. It's roots is hard to understand, people like to label it everywhere, but in reality it's a mix, of various south east asian writings.

@ThtOnePinoy It's the Eastern Indonesia(Timor included) area that is ACTUALLY valid for this Asian vs P.I. argument.In this area you will see people who look Melanesian to Malay,and inbetween.The Phillipines is more obviously Asian,and so is Western Indonesia.However,their Austronesian and P.I. ties are still there.A good analogy of the area is Turkey,Armenia,and certain countries like Albania-Are they European or "Middle Eastern?"The borders aren't very clear cut.
