It's amazing how far in between takes. There's a point there from 1:09 to 1:40 where it's one long take, the one where he kicks the jug up into the air. I wonder how many times he had to shoot these scenes to get them right. Then again, we are talking about Gene so it probably wasn't many takes by the time rehearsals were done. I'm thinking, Gene would not stop practicing his moves until he could do perfectly. This also makes sense when I think about how I've never found an outtake on Gene Kelly
What happened to Sharon McManus? She did a few more movies as a child actress, but surely could have been an adult star - apparently not, however. The web seems to lose track of her after about 1951.
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this scene!! It's so sweet and cute!! I would give anything to be that little girl... :) She looks like she's having so much fun! Also, anyone else amazed by how Gene Kelly is constantly whipping his hat on and off and yet NEVER manages to mess up his hair??
I never ever get fed up with watching this genius at work....how sorely missed this kind of entertainment is, at least I think so..oh but wait a minute...we have X Factor and Britains Got Talent, what am I thinking?
This was so sweet! Evan got a lot of flack on sytycd for being short, making it hard for him to dance with some of the taller girls on the show. Here is the perfect example of height differences and how a good choreographer uses his talent. Since Evan's idol is Gene Kelly and he captures the spirit of this style, it is good to know there is someone in the 'Gene' pool that can carry it on. Look for Ryan Kasprzak on season six, he will also be a favorite to those who want real entertainment!
A beautifully choreographed duet in a stunning looking market square set. So many great tricks: the candles, the pottery, the skipping rope, the rotunda they polka around- and finally, the charm of Sharon McManus- a foreshadowing of Gene's chemistry with children which would flower a few years later in "An American In Paris." The very end of him sadly walking away- upon seeing the girl he loves with another man (off camera)- is heartbreaking.
Her name is Sharon McManus. I do believe she loved Gene. However, she hated his assistant, Stanley Donen, who was the person who rehearsed her and taught her the dance. I'm afraid Stanley hated her too, having a rather WC Fields attitude towards children.
Indeed, his wife Betsy, in her bio talked about running out of gas on their Honeymoon through Mexico and Gene coming back on a hay cart driven by a man and his daughter. He jumped down with a gas can and then lifted the girl down and did a little dance with her that later inspired this number.
I am wondering ...this looks very much like the Market Square in San Antonio Texas...was this shot in San Antonio? I am also told that it might have been shot in California?? Anyone have any ideas? thanks!
He stood in front of the ceramic pot, straddling it and grabbed it with his heels and threw it up in the air. He then turned around to the left looking up at the pot facing it and then caught it. Yeah, pretty amazing dexterity and balance indicative of a lot of practice and hard work.
This is such a sweet scene because it shows the special rapport Gene had with children. It's easy to see how he became such a successful and popular dance instructor, while he was still just a teenager himself!
This is probably my favorite Gene Kelly dance and thanks for putting it up so I can share it with people who'll never watch the entire movie (what a shame). I love how Kelly is clearly watching her carefully the whole time, and take note of how few cuts there are in the entire sequence.
I think this is just so cute! What a talented and lucky girl to dance with Gene Kelly. As a side note: Gene just about makes me want to drool at the sight of him shaking his hips. Wow!
termina muy triste pero simplemente el mejor kelly :--]

It's actually La Plazita Olvera or Olvera St. in Los Angeles California, right across the street from Union Station. It's a historical landmark.

The problem with todays sad, sorry excuse for a world is that there are not enough Gene Kellys in the "Gene" pool......

I SO understand why my mom had such a crush. Look at those sailor *pants*. OH MY!
"Anchor's Aweigh" is probably one of the least familiar of the Kelly/Sinatra duo movies, but IMO, I think it's the greatest!
Itsmahere 3 years ago 4
Sailor suits always "suited" Gene well :)
I agree that this movie is the best of all three Kelly/Sinatra duos.
