I visited seven stores today and could not find the type of whistle you and other trainers on YouTube seem to use. At Dogwise.com I only see one with a training DVD. Can you suggest a source for just the whistle? I have a very well-trained dog but I want to work on an infallible recall using a whistle. Thanks.
Pamela, I have been whistle conditioning for 2 months very carefully. it is so powerful that when my dog is asleep and I v quietly blow the whistle, he jumps up and comes over! ( I tried it by mistake)!
BUT if there is a distraction...it still doesn't create the full conditioned reflex.
Does this work with more things than getting your dog to come to you?
I want to train my dog to do different commands like sit and stay, using different sounds with the whistle. I also want to train him to run beside me off leash, and not wander off, whenever I go running.
Apparently, BanMarkMcGwire hasn't heard of Pavlov. The point is to train the dog to almost unconsciously get to the owner when he hears the whistle, because he has been *conditioned* to expect something really good to happen when he gets there. As a trainer, I can tell you that this works, and works well, as does Leslie Nelson's protocol for 'Really Reliable Recall" - so if you have a dog that doesn't come, try both!!!!
